1 Volume 29 Number 13 March 29, Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC tel: fax: Joining Hands with God Dr. Jeff Roberts, Senior Pastor Roberts It was only a few decades ago that if you were to mention Islam, most Americans would have thought of people that they knew very little about and considered those who practiced Islam as interesting. When I was in seminary, Islam was approached like other world religions and there was very little emotional reaction to the term Islam. How things have changed in the past few decades. Now, just the term Islam creates emotional conversations from those in the church and outside the church. Politically, the question of how to treat Muslims in America has become another hot topic. Each and every week we are appalled at the act of those who have radicalized Islam and are using their faith as a reason to wage war, terror and the destruction of cities, people and antiquities. Beginning this Wednesday night, March 30, I will be leading us in a study of Islam and a Christian Response. I do not pretend to be an expert on this subject, but I have been collecting resources for almost a year to prepare this study. We will be learning together about the basics of Islam and what the Bible says in response. Each week, we will look at another basic belief of Islam and we will also have a Biblical passage we will consider. It is my hope that when we end our study we will have some basic knowledge of this world religion, the people who practice it and how our faith in Jesus is differs. We will be in the Chapel every Wednesday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. for 8 weeks. You do not have to sign-up, nor do you have to attend every meeting to participate. Hal Melton, MCCREARY COUNTY, KY Summer Mission Opportunities Construction & Vacation Bible School July 9-16 Cost: $265 This is our 10th year partnering with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and their Rural Poverty in McCreary County, KY (one of the top 5 poorest US counties). Our local partner, Hills & Hollers Ministries, operated by Jim and Rita Cmolik have worked hard to impact the lives of over two thousand families through building relationships, renovating substandard housing, running the PineKnot Cooperative (through which we donate truck loads of clothing, household items, etc.) and many other efforts. Several of our TBC families are going to spend days of vacation time helping in whatever needs to be done. Be a part of the 2016 Summer Team that will do home construction and mission VBS with a new partner, local Roundtop Baptist Church. Cost for the mission including transportation, meals, and lodging is $265. Sign-up on the Narthex Registration Board, or contact Hal Melton: or hmelton@tbcraleigh.com. VBS volunteers need to sign-up in March and Construction crew sign-up through April (if there is space left). We are limited to the first 31 persons! KY PineKnot Center Donations Need We are taking a load to McCreary County, KY to re-stock the PineKnot Cooperative (our mission partner, Hills and Hollers Ministries). Items that are desperately needed: Prom Dresses/Formals, Women s Underwear, (Sizes 5, 6 & 7), Women s Socks, Men s Underwear (Sizes S, M & L - Boxers or Briefs), Girls Underwear (Size 3), Training Bras. Bring these items to B 200 hallway KY Donations Box by this Sunday, March 27. Belize School Construction Mission Trip For Adult/Older Student August Cost: $1,200 We will be continuing our work on the Santa Elena Baptist Primary School with Pastor Manny Cowo and the great people of Santa Elena. You ll meet families / friends that we have gotten to know over the years including the children that attend the school who live in the neighborhood. At this time it is still a guess as to how far along the congregation will be in their work on the building. But we may be installing windows and doors into the two 30x30 classrooms we are working on. We will be staying at the Aguada Hotel within walking distance of the worksite. And their cooks will serve us a hot breakfast and full dinner each day. One of the church families will bring our lunch to the worksite. We will work on Saturday, then attend church with the Santa Elena Baptist Church on Sunday and take in some Mayan ruins or go cave tubing. We ll work full days Monday through Thursday, and spend our last day on the island of Caye Caulker relaxing, snorkeling, fishing or just exploring this small Caribbean paradise! 6 Rev. Steve Byers, What a wonderful Easter Sunday at Trinity! Special thanks to our choirs, orchestra, and to the trio, Jack and Kathy Stanford and Dawn Trollip, for adding to our worship services musically this year. I look forward every year to Easter Sunday; I cannot imagine being anywhere else than with my church family to celebrate the day of Christ s resurrection. From the early dawn of the sunrise service to the conclusion of the morning worship services, the music of Easter is my favorite times of praise all year long. Thank you to all who have worked hard to make this another beautiful day of worship together as believers. 8 Rev. Karen Metcalf Eickhoff, Seder Meal This wonderful tradition observed by our Lord was experienced last Thursday with a group of grade school children. The innocence and understanding that accompanies such an experience is priceless. Thank you Ryan Smith for serving on this lead team and making the kharoset and roasted eggs. Thanks also to Kevin and Will Gard for leading in the music and chants at the last minute. My hope is that all who experienced this Seder gained a new understanding of a Jewish and biblical tradition that even Jesus took seriously. Block Classes Beginning Beginning March 30 Block classes are beginning on March 30 and continuing through May 25 on Wednesday nights from 6:45-7:30. They will replace the GA and RA classes that ended on March 16. Some of the classes include Wacky Gym Games, Crafts Galore, Missions Mania, and Lego Land and games. Children will sign up for the activity they want to participate in as they arrive for choir. The Block classes may fill up so make sure you arrive early to mark your spot. Becoming a Christian/Becoming a Church Member Class For children in grades 2-5 April 3 and April 10 5:00-7:00pm E239 This is an awesome class that teaches about Conversion, the church, baptism and Lord s Supper. Churches should be eager to provide vacation Bible school, since it offers a unique approach to Christian education during the summer months. While at VBS, children are presented stories from the Bible, have time to meet new children, get a chance to spend a good time with friends, and experience new and fun activities. At VBS, children learn Bible verses, sing upbeat music, observe VBS 2016 June 16-18th Come catch the wave of God s amazing love at a weekend at the beach at Trinity. If you re interested in working with our VBS this year, please contact Katie Medlin at kmedlin@tbcraleigh.com Preview of the Schedule Thursday, June 16 Evening Friday, June 17 Evening Saturday, June 18 9:00am-2:00pm Lunch provided skits, create crafts, participate in recreation, take part in a mission project, and have a snack or a meal. VBS provides an opportunity to teach children about Jesus so that they can learn ways to be like Christ. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor (Luke 2:52). Children will grow in wisdom as they experience lessons from the Bible, they will grow in divine favor as they learn about God and God s love for them, and they will grow in human favor as they learn life application skills while interacting with others. Why else should churches offer VBS? VBS offers the church a fun and creative method of teaching Christ-like values and ways to interact with others. VBS also provides a strong biblical foundation for faith development for the children. VBS is an excellent outreach tool into the community a way to invite those who do not normally attend church to come into the church, get involved, and build a relationship with others and with Jesus Christ. The entire congregation can get involved in this outreach program, using their God-given talents to share the love of Jesus with their congregation and community. Adults can decorate, teach, shepherd children, prepare food, send invitations, send follow-up cards to visitors, work with publicity, and pray. By Betsy Parham and Linda Tozer. In each ten-week session, the students will learn the fundamentals of ballet while also receiving positive affirmation and instruction as they grow in their strength, flexibility, and technique.
