1 Volume 31 Number 3 January 16, 2018 TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH TRINITY TIMES 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC tel: fax: Deepen The Ties That Bind Dr. Jeff Roberts, Senior Pastor jroberts@tbcraleigh.com Roberts I am writing this article on the day our country celebrates the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. As I reflect on my 50-plus years as a white man, born and raised in the South, I am somewhat amazed at the progress that has been made between black and white in our country. I can reflect on attitudes and language that I heard growing up which I rarely hear expressed anymore. That does not mean that there are not those who still hold those views toward others; yet, it does mean that those views are not acceptable like they were only a few decades ago. Even though as a white man I can feel good about the changes I have witnessed, I know, as my African American Pastor friends say, We still have a long way to go. When I was a young 27-year old pastor, my first congregation was faced with a crucial decision. A black teenager (he would have referred to himself as black) was visiting our church with a friend. This teenager lived on a farm near some of our other members; in fact, his family worked on the farm of the grandfather of his friend. After several weeks of visiting the church, he left me a note that said he wanted to join the church. I knew the church had never had a black member and I also was wise enough to know that this was going to be an issue. In a Monday evening Deacons meeting, I shared with our all-male, all-white and all-older deacon body that the teenager had indicated that he wanted to join the church. I told the Deacons that I was not sharing this with them to get their permission to receive the teen, but I wanted to know what they were going to do once this occurred. I don t know how I had the courage to make that statement. Years later, I believe it was the power of the Holy Spirit and my willingness to live by a deep conviction that the church must be for everyone or it is not the church. What happened next I will never forget. You could tell that this news was causing some concern among the Deacons. Some suggested that maybe the teen had been sent to the church to prove a point. Others just wondered out loud why a black person would want to join an all-white congregation. What is his agenda? some asked. I assured them there was no agenda but to follow Christ and to be a part of a congregation that had welcomed him to worship. Although it was an uncomfortable hour of discussion, it was a beautiful one. It was a moment where followers of Jesus struggled with what their culture had always said was allowable and what they knew was the way of Jesus. Then our Deacon Chairman stood and made a speech. I think it is a speech that should have been recorded for all of the church to hear. Our Deacon Chair said, Boys, let s admit it that we were all raised as segregationalist. That is what we have known and that is how we were raised. However, when I read the Bible and think of the life of Jesus, I think we have to admit that just ain t right. Then he looked at me and he called me by the nickname he had given me. Rabbi, he said, if you are asking if I will stand with you the answer is yes. Then twelve white men voted to all stand with their young pastor and welcome the first black person into membership. They did not do it necessarily because they wanted to. Those deacons stood with their pastor

Dr. Roberts... continued because they knew that following Jesus was more important than any cultural norm they had known. I think my friends are correct: we still have a long way to go. But I am always reminded of the night, nearly 30 years ago, when a group of deacons faced their own biases and said, This is not right! We choose instead to follow Jesus. May it be so in our lives as well. Sunday School Transitions Sunday School Transitions will begin once we are secured in the sanctuary. Adult Division Directors have alerted all their classes of the changes and we are working on a plan for executing the moves. Classes will be transitioning as space becomes available. Our Goal is still to have every reassigned class in place by March 4. 3 Deacon of the Week Ed Duke has been a member of Trinity since 1994 and is a native of Fayetteville, NC. He and his wife, Beth, have two children: Samantha and David. Ed works as a Home Inspector, and as an Environmental Health Specialist. He serves on the Security Committee, and with First Light. He works with the Allen/York Sunday School Class. In a list of Things That Make Me Laugh, Bill Leslie listed Famous Bob Inskeep - the former radio star who now preaches with the same humor, wisdom and passion he brought to the airwaves. Special Music: The Ringtones have been together as a barbershop quartet since December They are all members of the General Assembly Barbershop Chorus and actively entertain audiences at corporate events, seminars, celebrations, senior s centers and more. They are delighted to bring this uniquely American musical art form to you this spring. Hal Melton, FOOD DRIVE Volunteers Needed FeBruArY 18 Each of the 6 times a year that we celebrate the Lord s Supper in worship, we take up a Love Offering and do a Food Drive to benefit North Raleigh Ministries a Collaborative Benevolence ministry of a dozen churches in N. Raleigh that Helps Our Neighbors in Need. NRM lets us know exactly what food items they need to help with 160 Back Pack Buddies or to stock the Food Pantry. We will publicize the items the week before. The church provides large containers around our campus into which donors will place the food. We need a Sunday School Class or simply a group of folks that have a heart for this ministry to form a team that will take the donated food to NRM during the 10:55am worship service. If you would like to volunteer to be on this team that will serve these six Sundays a year, please contact Hal Melton at hmelton@tbcraleigh.com or call the church office at Middle Schoolers through Adults are welcome!! Certification Training The commitment of Trinity s Disaster Relief Ministry is to enable every Trinity Church member the opportunity to help lessen the needs of hurting people caused by disaster. Our objective is to provide the opportunity for training, equipment, organization, and strategy for volunteers so that they are prepared to respond to disastrous situations to lift people up in Jesus name. This year s training will be in Durham County, March 2-3 or Nash County, March God calls out individuals and groups to accomplish His will. We are His hands, His feet, and His mouthpiece. Jen Hall, our TBC Habitat Coordinator, has met with the planning team to secure three Saturdays that TBC will supply 15 construction volunteers and lunch for 25. Please mark these Saturdays on your calendar now! March 10, March 24 and April 21 (OIAM). Closer to time, each volunteer will be asked to follow a link on the TBC Website to register with Habitat for the Saturday you choose. Belize Mission vbs June Santa elena Baptist Primary School Trinity and several other NC CBF churches have spent 8 years building this school which is in full use with 160+ children and 6 teachers. This final mission team in our partnership with Santa Elena Baptist Church will attend the first graduation ceremony of the school and do a 5-day (3-hours a day) VBS for the school children as a part of their last week of school. Rhonda Gubbins has agreed to serve as VBS Director and work hand in hand with the School Principal, Anna to make this the best week ever at the school. It is time to pull a team together! We are looking for 18 people (college & adults) VBS teachers, recreation leaders, craft leaders, and musicians who play and sing with guitar. The cost for the trip will be around $1475 +/- based on airfare when we purchase tickets. Partial assistance is available through the Shaw Missions Fund. 6 Rev. Steve Byers, Music Notes Special thanks to Nathan, Lydia, and Caroline Snell for leading us in worship this past Sunday morning. It is such a blessing and joy to hear many of our musicians share from their heart the joy of singing the Gospel through beautiful worship songs. sss The Sanctuary Choir had a wonderful retreat this past weekend at Trinity. The choir is preparing much music for the first Sunday in the Sanctuary, February 4, and for our Dedication Day on March 11. Our Easter cantata was the primary focus of the retreat, but we are also looking forward to music with guest musician and composer, Mary McDonald, who is well known in music circles worldwide. A native of Tennessee, Mary comes again to lead us in music on April 25 in the morning services as well as that night in concert with the Sanctuary Choir. It is going to be one of our busiest seasons ever! And the choir continues to grow. It is amazing to see how God is working through the life of this ministry and fellowship, but it is a blessing to work with so many people who want to praise the Lord through beautiful music. Continue to pray for this vital ministry as we seek to fulfill our calling. Who Is This King? Royal Servant...Rejected Friend...Risen Christ! This year s cantata, Who Is This King? will be presented on March 25, 2018 in both morning services with orchestra. Rehearsals are 7:45 pm each Wednesday night with two important dress rehearsals on March 21 and 22. It will be an amazing morning of music with our choir and orchestra, and our first presentation in the newly refurbished sanctuary!

Our youth are excited to lead as Trinity engages in this mission opportunity once again this year! Ways to Participate: 1. 9 Katie Medlin, What to do with your Christmas Cards As Christmas is over and the New Year is beginning, you may be taking down your Christmas decorations. Maybe, like me, you have beautiful Christmas cards sent to you from friends and family. What do you do with those cards? Here is an idea for you and your family that involves using those Christmas Cards to encourage your family to pray. This year, take all of your Christmas cards and place them in a shoe box or basket. Call a family meeting and talk about the beautiful cards your family received this year. Explain that you are going to do something new this year with all of the pretty cards. They are now weekly prayer cards. Each night, gather together in someone s bedroom or over dinner or wherever and have one child pick a Christmas card out of the prayer box or basket. Whoever sent you that card, becomes the prayer family of the week. Place that Christmas card somewhere in the house where everyone can be reminded to pray for that family. As you pray each night as a family, include that particular family in your prayers. The next week, pick a new card out of your shoe box and continue this process each week until all of the Christmas cards are gone. Let your kids decorate the prayer shoe box or write a letter to the family you are praying for. They can thank the family for the Christmas card and tell them they are praying for them this week. I pray you have a blessed New Year! The goal of the Band Aid project is to help provide cool and fun bandages to kids that need them, Transition LifeCare, a hospice organization, recently began a pediatric hospice unit. A sad reality of this world is that children need these kind of services. Transitions Kids has discovered that a band aid is a pretty significant thing. Often times, kids are allowed to hold onto a band aid during uncomfortable procedures, and when they are all done, they get to put the bandage on as a final sign of completion. We invite you all to bring in fun and cool band aids for our project this winter and fall. Look for the bins on the preschool hall. Lets shower these kids with love!
