1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. Who do you say that I am? This question put to the disciples is preceded, of course, by the question, Who do the crowds say I am? It is an interesting reflection. Christ first asks them about those who do not know him well those who have just heard about him. They answer with the greatest compliment that they dare say: You are like one of the prophets. This, in their mind is enough. Truly it is the highest possible thing that they could have reported to him, save for one thing. And Peter alone dares say it, but only after Christ asks, Who do you say that I am? You are the Christ. Notice that these questions reflect our blessed Lord s desire that we come to know him. That in being close to him and doing his will we gain knowledge not the other way around. It may be that we, today, rely on far too much of an insistence of knowledge of God rather than the doing of his will. We would talk about Christ and be satisfied much as the disciples were in reporting that the people thought he was one of the prophets. However, it is in intimacy with him and with our brothers and sisters in which we come to know, as Peter knew, that Christ is Lord. Could we ever leave him, knowing this? Could we ever forsake him after learning that he is the Christ, the Son of the Living God? We must know him. The final question that should be on our minds as we leave this earth should be, Will he recognize me as friend? Do we direct our lives to this? Did I share the Cross with him? Did I love well? The world today needs Christians not only people who come to Mass every week and leave him at the doors, but Christians who bear his name into this fracturing world and in his name stop the intense bleeding and bring light to those they meet. May a smile ever be on your face, and his name ever on your lips. That we may know, as did Peter, that Christ is Lord and this Lord is great indeed. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. St. Benedict s Ladder of Humility Week 9 of 12 Silence Prudence Selfabasement Serenity Repentance Perseverance Obedience Self-Denial Fear of God Step 9: SILENCE Only speak when you are spoken to, for Scripture says, When words are many, transgression is not lacking. (Proverbs 10:19) Silence explained When all things were in deepest silence and night was in the midst of her swift course, your almighty word, O Lord, leapt down from your royal throne. (Wisdom 18: 14-15) There can be no doubt that exterior silence greatly aids in promoting an interior awareness of God s presence. It says in the Gospel of Luke, for example, that Jesus withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed (Luke 5:16). And Saint John of the Cross a great master of interior prayer loved to pray in the mountains. But it is not always possible to be in the wilderness or in the mountains, and we are advised that when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you (Matt. 6:6). Saint Faustina said that in order to hear the voice of God, one has to have silence in one s soul and to keep silence; not a gloomy silence, but an interior silence; that is to say, recollection in God. One can speak a great deal without breaking silence and, on the contrary, one can speak little and be constantly breaking silence (118). In silence I tell you everything, Lord, because the language of love is without words (1489). Saint Pope John Paul II added the following about the importance of silence while praying: Listening and meditation are nourished by silence. A discovery of the importance of silence is one of the secrets of practicing contemplation and meditation. One drawback of a society dominated by technology and the mass media is the fact that silence becomes increasingly difficult to achieve. To be aware of God s presence within your soul is a great help in the spiritual journey. Sharing the Gospel If you have a little brother who asks you to tie his shoes six times, it is easy to get angry and say, "NO. Tie them yourself." However, God wants you to help others with a smile. He wants you to tie shoes for others. He wants you to open doors for others. He wants you to sweep the floor for others. God wants you to treat others with kindness as a favor to him. Prayer Show me how to treat others with kindness for you, Lord. Fall Retreat at Mount Saviour On Saturday, October 6 we invite parishioners to join us for a day retreat at Mount Saviour Monastery outside Elmira, NY. Because of the facility, we are limited to thirty participants. We will carpool and travel to arrive at 10:00 a.m. During the day, we will be able to join the monastery community for prayer at 12 noon and 3:00 p.m. In the course of the day, we will have two presentations by members of the Benedictine community, along with a shared community lunch. We will depart for home at 3:30 p.m. To reserve a place, contact Deacon Claude. In the second reading today, St. James has harsh words for those who do not put their faith into action. May we be such good stewards of God s gifts to us that we can never be accused of having faith that does nothing in practice.

Bethlehem Wood Carving Next weekend, our friend Louie from the holy land will be visiting our parish on behalf of the Catholic Christian family of the holy land on September 22 & 23. For centuries, the Christians of Bethlehem District have earned a living by carving olive wood religious art to sell it to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the holy land today, making it difficult for Christian artisans to support their families by the dignified work of their hands in the land of Christ s birth. Because of the lack of work, there has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the holy land. Currently, less than 2% of the population in the holy land is just Christian. Since the start of its mission- Bethlehem Wood Carving has helped hundreds of struggling families. Louie, through his own experience as founder, has made it possible for the Catholic Christian in the holy land to maintain both their livelihood and their ancestral homes in the land of Christ. Your purchase will make difference in the lives of many Christians.
