1 The Pastor s Two Cents Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord! This past Wednesday we held our annual parish service of remembrance specifically for all those who lost a loved one this past year but also for anyone who wanted to remember a loved one who has been called home to God. While it is always a difficult time and grieving has no timetable, our faith in Jesus calls us to support each other and pray together during these difficult times. We are spurred on by the words of St. Paul, We do not want you to be unaware, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope Our hope comes from our faith in Jesus Christ and the power of his resurrection. As we gathered to remember those we love we pray for their eternal rest and their eternal joy with God in the kingdom prepared for each of us from the foundation of the world. We also pray for God to ease our sadness and strengthen our faith. This prayer service, and whenever we pray at a funeral we are called to remember that we are not alone!! In the Apostles Creed (not the one we proclaim at Mass) we profess belief in the Communion of Saints. Simply stated, this means that we believe that we are still in communion (united to) all those who have died. When we pray the litany of Saints we are asking them to pray for and with us. This belief means that life does not end with death. We believe that the bond of love and family still exists between those who have died and ourselves. It means we can continue to relate to them, speak to them, and ask for their guidance and prayers. Fr. Ronald Rolheiser shares this story to illustrate this belief we have in the Communion of Saints. As he attended a conference whose theme was the rainbow and resurrection, a couple in the group rose to share the story of losing their 12 year old son to cancer after a long struggle. Of course, they were devastated! They shared that the morning after their son s death they were sitting in a friend s living room attempting to console one another, when their phone rang. It was a neighbor, Quickly, go look out your front door. You will see something unique. They rushed to look, and before them, was a rainbow the like of which they had never seen before. Rolheiser says, it extended perfectly without flaw from the edge of one horizon to the edge of the other. They were taken by its beauty and by its symbolism. (The rainbow is a symbol of hope, God s promise and the resurrection.) The couple was even more taken by the unmistakable intuition that it was their son who was responsible for this symbol at this time. As they watched in awe and in faith the mother heard the son say to her gently: Mum this is for you! And because it is hard for you to believe it, I will do it again, the same way, for you tomorrow at the same time! Rolheiser continues, All doubts that they had, thoughts that this was some trick of their imaginations or mere wishful thinking induced by fatigue, sorrow and longing were erased the next day when, at the same time, the identical rainbow reappeared! Their son was speaking to them and they, I am sure, will now forever know what it means to believe in the Communion of Saints! We are not always provided with such clear messages but for those who can trust in God, and God s love for each and everyone of us, however, reminders of those we love are all around us and scream out that in death life is not ended. Our communion with those we love continues. May our loved ones know eternal joy in God and may God help us to remain connected to them in the Eucharist and in our continued union with God. 3 Question of the Week: Having faith in difficult times is hard! How have I remained faithful to God even in a trying situation? How am I living out the Beatitudes? As we examine the universal call to holiness during the upcoming month, we will use the Beatitudes as our guide. Each week we will offer a reflection on two of the Beatitudes to help you think about your own life and how you God is calling you to be holy within your everyday experience. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice; they shall be satisfied. Scripture must be read in its historical context, and thus so too this particular passage. Hunger and thirst, as these words are used here, are something that few of us in the western world have experienced. What Jesus is referring to is the hunger pangs of a first century Palestinian laborer who knew what it was like to go without food for an extended period of time, and the thirst is that of a Palestinian who has experienced the heat of the desert and the thirst it induces. There is a tremendous amount of indifference in this world, and the reason is that indifference is rather painless. The indifferent do not suffer over the wounds of others; many in fact secretly delight in the misfortunes of others, which is why bad news spreads quickly. Many are simply not incensed at the injustices around them, and although they are very passionate about their goals, those ambitions often have little to do with making this a more just world and more to do with their own individual fulfillment. But an indication that the Lord is drawing you into himself, into his own life, is that you are the kind of person who loves justice more than you love yourself, as opposed to the kind of person who looks out for himself first, and only later, after all his needs are met, concerns himself with others. Those who have entered into Christ will suffer a great deal of hunger and thirst, because there is so much injustice around us. The more intense your love, the more intense your hunger and thirst; blessed are you if you live with this kind of hunger and thirst, because that means you have entered into the hunger and thirst of Christ. Blessed are the pure in heart; they shall see God. What is pure is unmixed. For example, we speak of pure maple syrup that is unmixed with anything else. To be pure in heart is to have an undivided love for God, a heart unmixed with any other competing love. Some people love creation more than the Creator; they love things; they worship things, wealth, the pleasures of the earth, the glorification of the self, etc. They may love God, but their love is mixed with a disordered love of self. Aristotle said: As a person is, so does he see. What we see and don t see is in large part determined by our character, the kind of person we ve made ourselves to be by our moral choices. We are what we love. The heart is the most important factor in determining what it is we are able to see. It is always delightful to have a discussion with a group of young grade nine students who are both highly intelligent and who still have the purity and innocence of childhood. They are able to achieve a level of understanding of the loftiest theological concepts, something no longer possible for many senior students who have lost that purity. That is why the pure of heart shall see God, who calls us to love Him more than His gifts. If we eventually get to that point, we shall see Him as He is in Himself (the Beatific Vision). As you can imagine, it takes a whole lot of effort to carry out our G.I.F.T. initiative and we're looking for some help getting ready for next month's session. Do you have a few hours you could spare? Here are some ways you can be involved: Help with a painting project as part of November's take-home resource. We need help painting figurines that we'll be sending home with households at our November session. You don't have to be an artist, this is a project that any adult can help with. Notre Dame has graciously allowed us a space to facilitate this project. On Monday through Thursday, November 7-10, we're looking for people to come and spend a few hours on this simple project. Supplies will be available from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., and the more hands we have, the quicker it will go! We'll also need some help getting ready for the November 20th session. If you are willing to stuff folders in the week leading up to the 20th, we would really appreciate it! If you like to make cookies, we'd really appreciate it if you could make a batch of non-nut cookies and bring it to Dougherty Hall on Saturday, Nov 19. We'll use those as dessert on the 20th. We are also looking for people to help set up tables and chairs on the 18th, or are willing to help set tables, or help with cooking and cleanup on the 20th. If you can help with any of these, please call or send us an to let us know ( , or stbenedictcommunications@gmail.com). Thank you!

May God continue to bless our parish that we may continue to be a shining light of God s love and mercy in our community. ~ Fr. Stan 2015/2016 Highlights In the past year we have welcomed 15 new members into the Catholic Church (RCIA). Last year we had 111 children in our pre-k through 5 th grade faith formation program. Today we have 161 children. Last year we had 74 young people in our Confirmation faith formation program and youth ministry program, grades Today there are 141 young people involved. Last year we had 12 people attending Bible study, this year we have 42. We had approximately 35 people attending various adult faith formation events last year, this year we have 465 adults registered and attending the adult formation opportunity we are offering through G.I.F.T. Youth Ministry at St. Benedict works not just for the spiritual growth of the Parish s Youth, but for their personal and social growth as well. Engaging teens in Retreats, Youth Group and other events aims to connect them with Jesus but also to the rest of God s Children on the same journey they are. Service is a hallmark of the St. Benedict faith community. Annual fall service days bring together the resources and abilities of some members with the needs of others. At the recent October 22 day, we helped over a dozen local residents prepare for winter by cleaning, raking and organizing. The October Respect Life SAINTS OF MERCY outreach to collect personal care items has brought in scores of toothbrushes, dozens of winter coats, hundreds of rolls of toilet paper and thousands of diapers. Financial Notes & Highlights Regular Sunday Collections increased 2.2% over budget. A bequest of $206,000 and donations for capital improvements attributed to increase in Gifts & Donations. Festival Revenue $181,000, expenses of $87,000 delivering a profit of $94,000. Overall Revenue was 19% higher than Budget. Salaries & Benefits under budget primarily driven by lower than expected health Care costs. School subsidy 29% of Regular Sunday Collections. Utilities under budget driven by lower heating costs. Overall Expenses $17,000 under budget. Remember this you can t serve God and Money, but you can serve God with money. ~ Selwyn Hughes Increased Revenue and lower operating expenses resulted in a $305,400 Operating Profit.
