1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. The scene depicted in this week s Gospel reading is a very beautiful one. It is read, often however, with fear. Certainly it is frightening, but it is so essential to our understanding of Christian life that we should take a closer look whenever we hear it. In this reading, we see Jesus (and Matthew s) brilliance in relating a point. We also see Jesus at his most poetic masterfully teaching a point with vivid imagery and a powerful metaphor. But most impressive is that he combines the love of God and the love of neighbor into one commandment: In loving the least among us we love him. Later, in John s Gospel account, Jesus further combines these ideas in his new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. The benchmark for how we are to conduct our lives together is in the total giving of self to the others we meet that we love first and judge never; although we are called to love prudently, we love no less than totally. Today, we have become somewhat neurotic about faith and our practice. We live life thinking What prayer should I say to fight this problem? Or, how far can I go? Is it a mortal sin? While all these things are good, they are not questions that admit an understanding of our lives as ones of total gift to the other. How often do we pray these words: Break me Lord that I may be reformed as a better giver, as more merciful, as a better neighbor, that I might love more deeply, die daily. Use me up, Lord, if only I might help the ones most in need that I might be more like you!? These words fill us with fear, and yet they are the way to life in Him. Our life with each other is one of a bond uniting us to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and all are wrapped up in this bond. Even, and maybe even especially, those whom we have judged harshly, those we understand the least, those who seem very far from grace. May we, as we prepare for the coming of God into our world at Christmas, recognize that he is Lord of all and welcome them with full and loving hearts into our community and into the life we share together in Jesus Christ, who tells us to love. In loving one another, we love Him and find salvation for ourselves. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY November 26, 2017 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 Question of the Week: When and where do you see Christ? Knowing Christ is a King that cares for His subjects with compassion and mercy. As his subjects, He calls us to a higher standard of living, and encourages us to live lives that best reflect His heart. We accomplish this by serving others in need and living lives driven by mercy and compassion. We tend to identify as "least" those who are distant from our daily living, for example, victims of famine in a foreign land. But those in need are actually very near us; wherever there is human need, there is Christ and we are called to respond. Loving Think about it: from the first moment of creation, God planned for us to share in his everlasting Life and joy. All we need to do is reach out to those among us and treat them with dignity as the very presence of the risen Christ himself. This is a small effort to put forth in our daily living when we consider what God has so graciously offered us; an everlasting share in the glory of Christ the King. The time is now. We cannot afford to put off Christ-like living to some future time. The judgment is now. What is at stake is our coming to fullness of Life. Serving No one is excluded from being our neighbor in need; our response is conditioned by how well we are able to the way we respond. Our participation in the life of Jesus demands that we serve those who are poor and in need. In the many opportunities that are present at this time of year find one that connects you directly with others in need. Thus says the Lord God: I myself will look after and tend my sheep. Then he plowed his sick neighbor's fields and planted his corn. That night, a note was on his pillow. It said, "You gave me milk, plowed my fields, and planted my seeds. What you did for these people, you did for me." If you also share food with the hungry, give clothes to the poor, visit people who are sick, and share the good news about Jesus with people who have made bad choices, God will see the loving things you do. He will reward you one day in heaven. Prayer God, I want to see your face in others. Join in a craft or game!
