1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. Hello! My name is Fr. Michael Costik and I am overjoyed to be assuming parish leadership here at St. Benedict s. Many of you may remember me from when I was here seven years ago as a seminarian. I enjoyed my time with Fr. Mull and the parish at that time, and I look forward to renewing the many friendships that began then. Thank you for the very warm and enthusiastic welcome. I most recently have come from a brief, but wonderful, assignment at St. Marianne Cope Parish in Rush-Henrietta. Before that I was at Church of the Assumption and Church of the Resurrection in Fairport for almost three years. I am very blessed to have had these wonderful experiences and I look forward to continued blessings with you here. I grew up in Livonia and many of you may know my sister who has a hair salon there or my mother, and I have cousins living in Bloomfield. I love the area very much and I feel in some strong sense like I m coming home. I worked and went to seminary in Europe and speak a handful of languages very poorly. I need more practice! I love the arts and literature, and feel strongly about education. I worked as a singer, composer, artist, director of a non-profit agency, and teacher in private and public school before I became a priest. These various things have created a unique set of qualities in me that God is doing his best to make use of in ordained ministry. I should warn you that I have dietary restrictions that I have fortunately learned how to deal with (it only took 43 years!), but I may not be able to eat everything I d like or that I m offered. Essentially, I can eat no grain. I do have Celiac disease, but I respond similarly to non-gluten foods most essentially oats and corn (which is in everything, it seems). However, I feel great when I follow this diet and this remains my only health concern at this time. I did my graduate work in liturgical theology, and liturgy remains a focus of my thought and life as a priest. Liturgy is the most important thing that we do. I love saying Mass and Sunday is my favorite day of the week because I draw so much from our celebrations. I feel very strongly that life in Christ is an experience in his Spirit of power and that my role is to empower the laity to fulfill its mission of service in the world, so that the people you encounter may find Christ in you and themselves become powerful in the Divine life we are offered through, with, and in Jesus Christ. I can go on, but I won t; I look forward to being with you with great joy. Pray for me as I assume this ministry. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY July 2, 2017 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 Question of the Week: How has the Holy Spirit brought kindness into your life? Building the Church with the Holy Spirit, Block by Block Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:5 This summer we will be reflecting on the various gifts and fruits of the Spirit that build up the Church. Our G.I.F.T. families received a package of 16 wrapped blocks at the last G.I.F.T. session in June. Each week, one block will be unwrapped and the gift or the fruit revealed. This week, we will unwrap the fifth block and you will find the word KINDNESS on it. Sometime this week, take 15 minutes and either on your own or with your family, and invite the Holy Spirit to come to your household: Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. After offering this prayer, reflect on the following: Week of July 2 Kindness KNOW (Mind): What is Christian KINDNESS? Kindness seems rather self-explanatory, doesn t it? Be kind. Yet what does that mean? So often we seem to regard kindness as merely the absence of being mean: I didn t tease you, therefore I am kind; I held the door for you, so I am kind. Do you tend to do acts of kindness, or are you more likely to just refrain from acts of meanness? The word kindness comes from the Greek word chrestotes (khray-stot-ace), which meant to show kindness or to be friendly to others and it often depicted rulers, governors, or people who were kind, mild, and benevolent to their subjects. Anyone who demonstrated this quality of chrestotes was considered to be compassionate, considerate, sympathetic, humane, kind, or gentle. The apostle Paul uses this word to depict God's incomprehensible kindness for people who didn t know Christ (see Romans 11:22; Ephesians 2:7; Titus 3:4). When the word chrestotes is applied to interpersonal relationships, it conveys the idea of being adaptable to others rather than requiring everyone to adapt to your own needs. LOVE (Heart): Accepting the fruit of KINDNESS into our hearts Kindness is doing something and not expecting anything in return. It is respect and helping others without waiting for someone to help one back. Kindness describes the ability to act for the welfare of those taxing our patience. Kindness can also seem quite unnatural; when we have been hurt or offended, we usually want to react in anger or bitterness. But kindness leads us to do just the opposite to respond with love and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32). SERVE (Hands): Putting our KINDNESS in service of the church, humanity, and the world. Your words, your actions, and your attitude these are all things in which you have the opportunity to choose kindness. Kindness will not always be the easiest choice. In fact, sometimes kindness will be the hardest choice. But it s always the right choice. This week you might try one or more of the following: Express caring concern for someone you encounter Pass on your favorite book or leave it in a public place for someone else to find Truly listen when someone is talking to you Be kind to yourself: Notice how you talk to yourself about yourself. If it seems negative, ask yourself if you would say this to a good friend and notice what happens. G.I.F.T. Vacation Bible School Message Received: Hearing God s Call Children in grades K-5 are invited to sign up for three G.I.F.T. 6 Page Six St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish July 2, 2017 Some Reflections about Religious Freedom In the June 18 bulletin, we mentioned that Sarah Neubecker and Megan Knopf of our parish were first place winners at the state level of the Knights of Columbus for their essays on Challenges we face as Catholics today, the importance of religious freedom, and the idea of the Catholic in the public square. As we celebrate the birthday of our country, we share a paragraph from each of their essays: From Sarah Neubecker s essay: In these United States, all citizens are guaranteed the right to religious freedom. But as Saint John Paul II once said, Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought. Religious freedom for Catholic Americans calls us to a higher standard; we cannot take our religious liberty for granted. Not only must we exercise our religious liberty through worship, we must also use our right to religious freedom as a guide for our moral consciousness. As Catholics, Jesus calls us to do and to be more than the average American citizen. We are endowed with religious freedom, but if we do not use this gift for the advancement of society, we have wasted something precious. From Megan Knopf s essay: Some people believe that business should never mix with a person s beliefs. When it is said religion shouldn t be in the public square, people don t mean politics or business; the public square means anywhere outside of your front door. People say these things should not mix, but for Catholics, our beliefs and morals are who we are. We can t act one way religiously and then live out a completely different life. Catholics are called to not only live lives of faith, but they have a responsibility to build up the common good. Most Catholics do that through living a moral life. A Catholic cannot give up who they are just to please the wishes of others; their beliefs and faith make up who they are. CONGRATULATIONS to each of these young women of our parish. May their sentiments echo in all our lives. How do YOU respond to challenges we face as Catholics today, the importance of religious freedom and the idea of the Catholic in the public square? The Children Are Coming! On Monday, July 31 and Tuesday, August 1, our parish will host a day camp for Rochester inner-city children, ages 3-5, as part of Project Urge. This will serve as one of our sites for St. Benedict Parish s Teen Service Camp. We are looking for additional volunteers to: help prepare snacks and meals for the children work with, play games with, or read to the children provide a hands-on craft or activity for the group Please contact Emily Spinelli at , ext. 42 if you are interested in helping Project Urge Day Camp Readings for the Week of July 2, 2017 Annual Parish Lawn Sale Good, usable items in working condition can be left in the PAC basement weekdays and under the trailer on weekends and evenings. We cannot accept TVs, computers, printers, or computer components as we have to pay to dispose of them. We also cannot accept mattresses, cribs, or college textbooks. If you are going to leave clothing, please mark your clothing bags either Clothing Boutique or St. Vincent de Paul. Help is needed with heavy lifting. Please call Marcia Webster at or Linda Upchurch at if you can help or with questions. KnightLine Congratulations to Zachary Green! Zachary was the recipient of the 2017 K of C Frank A Cutri Council #1445 College Scholarship Award last Sunday during graduation at Canandaigua Academy. On June 21, the Knights held a conversation with the students at St Mary s School about the importance of supporting Catholic education, and then presented a check for $2000, partial proceeds from this spring s Clergy Appreciation Dinner. The Knights would like to give a warm welcome to Brother Knight, Fr. Michael Costik! Fr Costik is a founding and charter member of the K of C Council at St. Joseph s in Penfield, and most recently, the Council Chaplain for Our Lady of the Genesee Council in Henrietta. Happy 4 th of July, Independence Day to all, and remember to thank our veterans for their service for all of our freedoms! For information about the K of C and our mission and activities, please contact Brian Moser at (585) or bmoser2012@gmail.com. Would you like to know more about Catholicism? Have you thought about becoming Catholic? Do you know someone that might be interested in Catholicism? Join us for any of our RCIA information meetings Sunday, August 27 at 10:15 am in the Parish Administration Center (P.A.C.) or Wednesday, August 30 at 7:00 pm in the P.A.C. If these dates do not work for you or you have any questions, please contact Nick Laskowski at (585) x 37 or Nick.Laskowski@dor.org. Here is what someone who recently went through RCIA has to say: The process of RCIA has surely been what I have been asking for in prayer. The Holy Spirit working through RCIA has given me a renewed commitment to Christ, a desire to be an active member of the body of Christ in the Catholic Church, and filled me with a knowing that I am loved and was made to love. Through the RCIA Team s, education, and compassion I am proud to say I am a Catholic and I love the church. I am a child of the Lord, the King, the Savior Jesus Christ. I am grateful beyond words for what I have learned and experienced in RCIA. I am better for it, as is my family. Thank you to all who support RCIA. For anyone thinking of joining it will surely be a blessing to you. Sarah Martyn Kid s Corner Sharing the Gospel God wants you to love your family and friends. But God wants you to love him even more. Be kind to your mom and listen to her. Help your dad with chores and have fun with him. But also remember to help people who are not in your family. God gets excited when you share his love with others. Prayer God, show me ways to help all people who love you.
