1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. Jesus brings beauty back to the world that has been made ugly by our sin. This statement is a tremendous part of the saving message of victory in Jesus Christ. It saved this man then and it stands to save us today. As we deal with the gravity of the horrific violations that occur all too frequently in our Church and in the world, we remember this: that it is Christ who restores order to the world and the intended order of the world is beauty. This is a word that has lost its place. We don t talk about beautiful things. We are cautious not to say a person is beautiful, physically or otherwise. We don t recognize beauty and/or if we do, we are too fearful that it be misinterpreted to speak the words. We then deal with one another in effect denying the other s beauty; to do so denies that God, who creates only beautiful things, is not present in the others we meet. This is how horrible violations occur. We do not see other people as created by God, we see them as objects to be used. The man healed by Jesus is preciously treated by Christ. Christ understood his value, saw his beauty and restored it. He offers this to all. You are beyond value. Your beauty is shining and full. You are so beautiful that God will die to preserve your radiance. This is the healing center of our belief, that God sees you as he saw this man personally knowing your pain and restoring you to the fullness of what was meant for you. We all have pain, we all fail, we all violate, we are all ill. We suffer. But this suffering itself heals because Christ suffers with us and for us. Be not afraid. You are radiantly beautiful and every blemish is known to Christ who restores you to the fullness of life. Know that you are loved and long to meet him who longs to cure us all. Fall Retreat Planned On Saturday, October 6 we invite parishioners to join us for a day retreat at Mount Saviour Monastery outside Elmira, NY. This is a Benedictine monastery; one of the oblates joined us for our Seven-Elevenish celebration this July. Because of the facility, we are limited to thirty participants. We will carpool and travel to arrive at 10:00 a.m. During the day, we will be able to join the monastery community for prayer at 12 noon and 3:00 p.m. In the course of the day, we will have two presentations by members of that community, along with a shared community lunch. The future of humanity does not lie solely in the hands of great leaders, the great powers and the elites. It is fundamentally in the hands of peoples and in their ability to organize. It is in their hands, which can guide with humility and conviction this process of change. I am with you. Each of us, let repeat from the heart: no family without lodging, no rural worker without land, no laborer without rights, no people without sovereignty, no individual without dignity, no child without childhood, no young person without a future, no elderly person without a venerable old age. ~ Pope Francis Schola Cantorum St. Benedict s Parish is proud to announce startup plans for a choir dedicated to Gregorian chant and sacred music polyphony. The Schola will sing at both St. Bridget s and St. Mary s on selected occasions with several rehearsals in preparation. Organist Garrett DeMarco will lead the Schola, with the support of St. Benedict s music director, Sarah Eaton. Garrett would like to invite musicians who are open to the challenges of reading music harmonies and singing in Latin. The Schola will need a sufficient amount of male voices, but both men and women will have essential roles in balance and harmony. Vatican II s document Sacrosanctum Concilium points out the how Gregorian chant is specially suited to the Roman liturgy, All things being equal, Gregorian chant should hold a privileged place, as being more proper to the Roman liturgy. Other kinds of sacred music, polyphony in particular, are not in any way to be excluded, provided that they correspond with the spirit of the liturgical action and that they foster the participation of all the faithful. Since the faithful from different countries come together ever more frequently, it is desirable that they know how to sing at least some parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, especially the profession of faith and the Lord s Prayer, set to simple melodies. (Sacrosanctum Concilium 41, from Vatican II) The Schola hopes to sing for the first time on Gaudete Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of Advent: December 16, Garrett would like to meet interested musicians in October and set up 4-6 rehearsals in preparation. Music selections will include Veni Veni Emanuel, Conditor Alme Siderum by Michael Praetorius, and Conditor Alme Siderum by Michael Praetorius. To support this effort in starting the Schola, please contact Garrett at garrett.demarco@gmail.com.

Upcoming Rochester Men s Conference The annual Rochester Catholic Men's Conference will be held October 13 from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Parish. This year s theme will be "The Eucharist". For more details, including registration information, please visit Bethlehem Wood Carving Our friend Louie from the holy land will be visiting our parish on behalf of the Catholic Christian family of the holy land on September 22 & 23. For centuries, the Christians of Bethlehem District have earned a living by carving olive wood religious art to sell it to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the holy land today, making it difficult for Christian artisans to support their families by the dignified work of their hands in the land of Christ s birth. Because of the lack of work, there has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the holy land. Currently, less than 2% of the population in the holy land is just Christian. Since the start of its mission- Bethlehem Wood Carving has helped hundreds of struggling families. Louie, through his own experience as founder, has made it possible for the Catholic Christian in the holy land to maintain both their livelihood and their ancestral homes in the land of Christ. Your purchase will make difference in the lives of many Christians. We gladly accept all major credit cards, checks & cash. The good steward must not show favoritism. The rich may have many material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the second reading that God has chosen the world s poor to be rich in faith and inheritors of God s kingdom.
