1 The Pastor s Two Cents Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. The Season of is a season of renewal and new birth. Not only do we see it present in nature; we also see it visibly in the church. Last Wednesday evening a number of young men and women from our parish received the Sacrament of Confirmation at Sacred Heart Cathedral. I extend my gratitude to Andrew Uttaro, our coordinator of Youth Ministry, and all who worked with these young people to deepen their understanding of their faith and to prepare them for this important Sacrament, and to Bishop Matano who welcomed them to the Cathedral and Confirmed them. Now this weekend and next weekend, a number of our children will be receiving Holy Eucharist for the first time! My deepest gratitude to Deacon Claude, the catechists, and all the parents who have helped to prepare these children for this important step in their faith journey. The enthusiasm and joy that these young people bring to this celebration should also help each of us to remember the special grace that God imparts on us throughout our lives and rekindle in us that same enthusiasm. Does this person look familiar to you? Probably not! I sure had much more hair back then! While I am not sure I fully appreciated God s great gift to me that day, as I look back I know that God s gift of the Eucharist on that day, and everyday since, has brought me to where I am today. The Eucharist has been, and continues to be, a source of strength, inspiration, hope, peace, and love that gives me life today and will lead me to life eternal! I hope that you will take some time this week to dust off your pictures and remember. I hope that you will take time to recognize the hand of God blessing your journey and reminding you of His great love for you. We do not make this journey alone. So as we remember, may we also give thanks for those who have accompanied us and continue to inspire us on our faith journey. I hope we can also offer a prayer for the children who will be receiving First Holy Communion this weekend and next, who, as loving instruments of God, call us to remember. May God continue to bless them on their faith journey! Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan God s call to remember! 3 Question of the Week: Over the next two weekends we will celebrate alongside our young friends as they receive First Eucharist. What do you remember about the day you celebrated First Communion? What effect has the Eucharist had on your life? Invitation to a Meal Throughout the Gospels, it seems that many significant events and important teachings are set within the context of a meal, and so it is appropriate that our own most significant encounter with Jesus takes place in a meal setting as well in the Eucharist. A look at the role that meals played in Jesus life helps us recognize the significance of the Eucharistic meal for us today. INVITATION: Stories of forgiveness and peace are expressed in stories of meals. Jesus statement to the tax collector Zacchaeus, Come down quickly for today I must stay at your house, was heard by Zacchaeus as an invitation to conversion and to share what he had with the poor. Jesus makes clear that his invitation is open to everyone. RESPONSE: In Luke s Gospel, Jesus tells us that many had been invited to a great feast only to send excuses for not coming on the day the feast was to begin. The host then invited the poor and lame those who would never be invited to a feast to come in and enjoy his food. Jesus makes clear in this story that God s invitation requires a response. RECOGNITION: At the end of Luke s Gospel, we find the account of the dejected disciples on the road to Emmaus. They thought Jesus was dead. Although Jesus came to walk with them and tried to explain the meaning of his death and the promise of the Resurrection to them, they did not understand; they didn t even recognize him! But it was in the breaking of the bread that they were able to see him again, and in sharing that meal, they were energized to go to the others and proclaim the new life that Jesus promised. JESUS GIFT OF HIMSELF: And, most important, it was in the context of a meal that Jesus took bread and wine and, after giving thanks, said: This is my body which is for you.this cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me (1 COR 11:24-25). Jesus is giving us his very self and will be with us always in this meal. Reflecting on these stories helps us name some key themes that are to be present in our celebration of Eucharist; the invitation to share in the life of Jesus through the Eucharist is open to us. The invitation requires a response from us not simply showing up but living lives that place our relationship with Jesus at the center. Through the Eucharistic meal, we are united in Jesus death and Resurrection and sent to proclaim the reality of God s love for all people in word and action. sacraments/eucharist/invitation-to-a-mealfirst-eucharist Farewell Reception Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for a farewell reception for Fr. Stan on Sunday, June 18th, after the 11:30 a.m. Mass in Dougherty Hall.

4 Page Four St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish May 21, 2017 Holy Day of Obligation: Ascension Thursday He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. Christ's bodily ascension forty days after his resurrection foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven. He has given his life for us and has returned to his rightful place next to his Heavenly Father so that we can now live with the hope of one day joining him in divine glory forever. This Thursday, May 25, is the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord into Heaven. Please take time to commemorate his love for us at one of the Masses scheduled this week. Wednesday, May 24 Saint Mary s 5:30 p.m. Anticipation Mass Thursday, May 25 Saint Bridget s 8:00 a.m. St. Mary s 6:45 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 12:10 p.m. The Medical Missions Story: An Evening of Sharing and Reflection The Finger Lakes Guild of the Catholic Medical Association invites all members of Rochester area health care professions to join us on Thursday, May 25 from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. for an evening program focused on medical missions. Save the Date: 7-11ish Last year we began a new parish tradition: to gather on the Sunday closest to our patronal feast day of St. Benedict (which each year is celebrated on July 11). This gives us the opportunity to gather informally, to enjoy each other s company, meet others for the first time, and experience some of the flavor of who we are and what we do at St. Benedict s. This year, we will use the occasion to officially welcome our two new priests, Father Costik and Father Dorkenoo. We will also be highlighting some of the work being done with our migrant ministry in Marion (there promises to be some wonderful music, dancing, and drama) and the progress on our Kenyan project. This year s date is Sunday, July 9; the event is held at St. Bridget s campus and a chicken barbeque will also be offered that afternoon. Envelopes to place meal orders and make contributions to our migrant and Kalama ministries will be available soon at the doors of Church.

Readings for the Week of May 21, 2017 Season 2017 Bulletin Reflection Series: Called to Care for Our Common Home May 21 While Jesus was on earth, he modeled a life based on simplicity and love of God and neighbor. Jesus entrusted us, his followers, to carry on his work. Purchasing is always a moral and not simply economic act. Today, in a word, the issue of environmental degradation challenges us to examine our lifestyle. (Pope Francis encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home). We who live in the United States use a far greater share of the earth s resources than others. Are we willing to buy smaller, more fuel-efficient cars and homes, trade in our electronics less frequently, shop less, eat sustainably, waste less food, use fewer disposable items? Let us not waste God s gifts; let us be protectors of them. Yoga Class at St. Bridget s Join us for yoga on Thursday evening 6:00 7:00 p.m. in St. Bridget s Church Hall.
