1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. The word we use to describe the presence of Christ in what we receive at Holy Communion is real. Now, on this day, many homilies will repeat and defend this reality with the homilist s fist pounding. While they are correct that the presence is real, this should require minimal defense because the evidence of the real presence is so strong and obvious. In fact, there are two reasons that are often overlooked that very clearly take the need for convincing anyone out of the equation. First, Jesus Christ said, This is my Body and This is my Blood. He did not say This represents my Body or Blood. Simple. Christ himself equates himself with Bread and Wine. This means that His substance that is His Body is in the appearance of the bread and His substance that is His Divine Blood is in the appearance of the Wine. Never does he use the words sign or symbol; rather, he says, is. We call this the mystery of transubstantiation because the substance of Christ crosses over into the appearance of bread and wine to become the Bread of Life and the Wine of Salvation which is given to us for nourishment that we may transubstantiated, too that we might become His Body, and that His Divine Blood may pump in our human hearts. The second reason that we know this is true is that we can see this happening! Throughout the world, the people who consume this nourishment become an astonishing thing they truly and really become the Body of Christ. The world over is full of examples of the power of God working through the members of the Body of Christ: to feed the hungry, to visit the sick, to catechize those who do not know Christ, to pass on the wealth we receive in Christ in turn to those who may lack it. In every parish may this be so may the account of our stewardship be one of building ministries focused strongly and solely on Christ rather than our own kingdoms of vanity and ego. May we, in serving, be aware that this is a reality that Christ has called us to be his very self in the world. May the Body and Blood of Christ make us powerful in light, light that is really His light May we, with every consumption of the Body and Blood of Christ, become more His and may the world be sanctified because of the Body and Blood that you are. This is the greatest evidence that this is all real that you and I are all these things because we consume what is really God. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY June 3, 2018 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 Please join us in welcoming our newest parishioners: Keith & Deborah Northridge, Jordan & Kelly Patric, and Maryann Drew June 3, 2018 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Each Eucharist, as we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, we embrace anew our passing over to new Life in Christ. Question of the Week: As Catholics we believe in the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. How does this reality transform me? Knowing: At Mass we do what Jesus did at the Passover meal. When we gather for Mass the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus. Every time we take part in the celebration of the Eucharist, Jesus is present. In the Eucharist, Christ is really and truly made present. The Eucharistic celebration is a memorial of Jesus death and resurrection. It is a sacrament of love. The Eucharist is the center of our Christian faith and life. Loving: The Passover foreshadows another passover - Jesus own passing over from suffering and death to risen Life. And yet another passover: our passing over from old self to new self, from life of sin to life of grace. Each Eucharist, each time we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, we embrace anew our passing over to new Life in Christ. Serving: In the beginning of today s Gospel, Jesus instructs his disciples to make preparations for the Passover meal. Like most meals, the Passover required planning and preparation. Just as we take time to prepare for significant events in our lives, our celebration of the Sunday Eucharist also requires planning and preparation. Little acts of self-giving among the people with whom we live and work is preparation for sharing in the Eucharist and receiving eternal Life. Family: As you gather as a family, talk about some of the things that are required to prepare for your family meals. Plan together a special Sunday meal by choosing the menu, preparing the shopping list, and assigning duties for cooking, setting the table, preparing decorations, leading the prayer, and cleaning. Read together today s Gospel (Mark 14:12-16, 22-26). Notice how Jesus instructed his disciples to prepare for their Passover meal. All meals require some kind of planning and preparation so, too, our Sunday Eucharist requires planning. What might we do as a family to better prepare for our celebration of the Eucharist? Choose one or more ideas to begin to implement together as a family. Pray together that God will help your family make your celebration of the Eucharist the highlight of your week. Pray together the Lord s Prayer St. Benedict Parish Service Camp July 15-July 20 Stewardship refers to care. Discipleship refers to whom we belong. We are servants because we are His. This is the core of Christian life. St. Benedict Parish's annual Service Camp is a huge piece of our Youth Ministry program. Every summer since 2008, our youth have come together, taking a week out of their summer to serve God in all others we meet. From service projects like Foodlink and House of Mercy in Rochester to those right here helping seniors in our own community, the goal is to encounter Jesus in who we meet and what we experience. Along the way, teens discover themselves being the hands and feet of Jesus to those they serve. Service Camp is a tremendous blessing made possible by the hard work of dozens of people within our own Parish and elsewhere. It is a wonderful work that needs many adult volunteers and generous help from those who want to give whatever they can to the effort. If you want to be a part of the adult component of Service Camp, such as a driver, supervisor, or reflection leader, please contact Nick Laskowski at Nick.Laskowski@dor.org or (585) , ext 37. Adult volunteers are a critical component of this program, so please prayerfully consider participating. Registration information for teens grades 8-12 wishing to participate is available on our website and registration forms are also at the entrance to Church. Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which his compassion looks on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. ~ St. Teresa of Avila

Then he held up the cup of wine and said, "This is my blood." During Mass the priest says the same words: "This is my body. This is my blood." Through the prayer, the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ. When you eat the body and blood of Christ, it gives you the power to say "No," to evil. Prayer Dear God, help me to be truly thankful for the way Jesus gave up his own body and blood to save me from my sins. Amen.
