1 The Pastor s Two Cents Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman once said, to live is to change; and to be perfect is to have changed often. Very few, if any, people welcome change. However, as Newman suggests, to live is to change. As a parish community, we are experiencing a number of changes as we begin the month of June. Last weekend, we welcomed four new members of the parish onto the Parish Pastoral Council. The Holy Spirit selected Bob Cownie, Sara M. Bodine, Brent Hall, and Laura Barone. We congratulate them and assure them of our prayers as they begin their service on the Parish Pastoral Council. We also say thank you to Chris Decker, Nancy Lynch, Jean Mercandetti, and Norah Nolan-Cramer who have completed their terms of service. I will always be grateful for the support and the advice that I received from the Council in my years of service here as your pastor. As we each look in the mirror, we should realize that change is inevitable. While we can try to avoid it or run from it, change is an important part of our journey that we must accept. To the degree that we can accept the little changes in our lives, we will also be able to accept the ultimate change as we let go of the physical and material to embrace the eternal, as those who have gone before us in faith teach us! As we move forward it is ok to look back, but we cannot go back! We must always move forward as we look back in gratitude knowing that God is the one who will always hold us together, in the power of the Holy Spirit. As you know, in my priestly ministry, I have moved a great deal, but I never get used to it. It is never easy, nor will this one be! However, I have always found great strength and wisdom from the prayer of Thomas Merton (a favorite of mine that I discovered when in seminary). I have shared it before and will do so again. MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost or in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils (my journey, my changes) alone. Don t ever forget, The Lord is with you! 3 Question of the Week: How has the Holy Spirit brought love into your life? Building the Church with the Holy Spirit, Block by Block Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:5 This summer we will be reflecting on the various gifts and fruits of the Spirit that build up the Church. Our G.I.F.T. families will be receiving a package of 16 wrapped blocks today. Each week, one block will be unwrapped and the gift or the fruit revealed. This week we will unwrap the first block you and find the word LOVE on it. Sometime this week, take 15 minutes and either on your own or with your family, and invite the Holy Spirit to come to your household: Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Following the invitation, reflect on the following: Week of June 11 Love KNOW: What is Christian LOVE? Christian love is not just human love conditioned by likes and dislikes, it is the very love of The Most Holy Trinity that inhabits us and is always trying to break through to love others unconditionally through us. It is the love of God, that gave up his only Son to save the world. It is gift and sacrifice. We Christians do not love others because of who they are or what they have done, we love others because of who we are, inhabited by the love of God that is all gift and makes no distinctions. We have two invitations: first, to rejoice in how much God loves us and in the relationship we have with God because of Jesus' work, and second, to reflect on the following: How can I better prepare myself to receive this fruit of love of the Holy Spirit in my life? Who are those that God has been trying to love through me? What is standing in the way? Can I ask the Holy Spirit to come and clear the way so God can love, God s way, through me? LOVE: Accepting the fruit of LOVE into our hearts Reflect on St. Paul's exhortation on love: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a. How do you live this exhortation in your life? Examine your relationships. How do express your love for your family? How do you relate to your co-workers? How do you show friendship? Love is a communal action. Amazingly, love grows as you express it outward to others. Pray the Great Commandment every day. The Jewish people pray the Great Shema, which we call the Great Commandment, when they rise each morning before they do anything else. Make it a habit of praying this prayer each morning: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 10:27) SERVE: Putting our LOVE in service of the church, humanity, and the world. Make sacrifices for others throughout the day. As you encounter challenges and difficulties, offer them up for your prayer intentions. If you're having a bad day, pray "Lord, I offer up this day for the intention of..." Make a deliberate fast for a special intention. (Fasting isn't just for Lent.) Offering up our sacrifices for our prayer intentions moves our focus from ourselves to God and others. Love grows in our hearts when our focus moves from ourselves to God and others. What other ways might you be able to develop and grow the fruit of love in your life? Allow the Spirit of Creativity to inspire you to nurture and prune your life to grow love. Adapted from: Farewell Reception for Fr. Stan & Fr. Daniel on Sunday, June 18th, at 12:30 in the afternoon in Dougherty Hall.

4 Page Four St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish June 11, 2017 The Most Holy Trinity Sunday June 11 The Sunday following Pentecost, we celebrate one of our fundamental beliefs and most profound mysteries the Holy Trinity. As we celebrate this belief, we remember that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. ~ Jn 3:16-17 Don t Forget! The Second Annual Party with a Purpose Is This Week! 6 ONE TIME CASH ASSISTANCE KALAMA PROJECT Page Six St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish June 11, 2017 ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE POOR How did our patronal Saint, Benedict (whose Feast is celebrated by the universal Church each July 11) address the needs of the poor? Through hospitality. How do we modern-day followers of Benedict do so throughout the year? Through our outreaches to the poor in our midst. That s what SEVENELEVENISH celebrates on Sunday, July 9, 2017: how we share of our gifts, time, and talents to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters. This year, we highlight four ministries in our local community. This year we also use the occasion to welcome our new pastor and parochial vicar who will help shepherd us in the years to come, to stay true to the Gospel message of Jesus in the spirit of Saint Benedict. HELP ME. I have no water to drink and no care for my medical needs and no ability to educate my children. Since 2009, we have worked to provide response to these cries from the people of Kalama, Kenya. We have built a borehole well, providing clean water to the community who previously had no source for drinkable water, other than the scarce rainfall in their drought-ridden land. We have built a medical clinic to serve their needs. And we continue to educate their children through scholarships we provide for high school and college education and through an eight year project to build an elementary school in the village. We need funds to continue our outreach in Kenya. Each year we need to raise $22,400 to maintain our support of students in high school and college and provide a small stipend for the ongoing needs of the clinic. Our school building project costs $ 7500 each year as we construct a building to house another grade. The construction has begun; it must continue. Our Lenten offerings provided $3500. School tuitions will come due in August. HELP ME. I need help to navigate through daily life with a sense of community, safety and care. Over the last two years, we have developed a ministry to the migrant workers in our area. We provide opportunities to workers at the local racetrack and those working on farms in the Marion area. As they struggle with separation from their families and limited resources, we offer friendship, caring for their physical needs of clothing and food, and opportunities to grow in their ability to integrate into our society. Whether it be assistance in literacy, participation in religious and ethnic celebrations or offering our friendship, we have a commitment to continue to reach out. Currently a number of parishioners are providing weekly sessions for those wanting to become American citizens, but none of the migrants has the $725 needed to pay for the exam. As workers move into the area, they are without clothing for our climate, furniture for their small quarters or school supplies for their children. Through our outreach, we help to meet those needs. MIGRANT MINISTRY HELP ME. Although I do my best to pay my bills, I have gotten behind and face eviction or utility shut-off. HELP ME. I am homeless. My family has no place to stay where we can be together as we get back on our feet. The working poor are in our midst. Whether it be a downward spiral in the economy, lack of skills to land a higher paying job, or just too many expenses trying to keep above the water line, many are unable to keep up with the monthly payments of housing, food, utilities and medical care. Our local St. Vincent de Paul Society has begun a CASH ASSIS- TANCE program to provide one-time emergency relief for those who are in crisis. Satisfying one-time emergencies could be paying for a car repair, a medical bill, or a heating bill that was out of control because of the cold weather. It requires a careful listening ear to not only hear the story and understand the severity of the situation, but also a compassionate heart to address the concern. Assistance is given to the business who has delivered the service, not the individual. Sometimes things get so bad that families are evicted. The daily expenses have exceeded the family income and people lose housing. Families face the crisis of being without a place of safety and shelter; as great, they face the risk of being separated from one another. In the very moment of desperation, the possibility of isolation looms over them. Families need to stay together in times of crisis. The typical shelter approach is to divide into male and female, causing even more anxiety among parents and children. The FAMI- LY PROMISE movement which is beginning in Ontario County builds on a national movement which provides the hospitality of shelter, food and caring through local faith communities at no cost to families while they work with service providers to reestablish themselves as solvent units. FAMILY PROMISE In the spirit of Saint Benedict, our annual SEVENELEVENISH reminds us of our commitments to others and gives us the opportunity to learn more about those ministries and show our support through presence and offering. So, whether you come for the chicken barbeque, to meet new staff members, to learn more, or just to gather with other parishioners, please join us on SUNDAY, JULY 9, 2017 from noon 3:00 p.m. on the Bloomfield campus.
