1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. The reading for this week contains two people who come to Jesus and have to take a risk to do so. The question then is whether we have such faith. Can we put down our pride, can we avoid entrenchment in an ideology or our own ideas and egos to live for Christ and for the others we may encounter? The synagogue official is someone whose colleagues would have been very uncertain or very much against what was happening with Jesus ministry. At the very least, they would not want to admit that they had confidence in him. But this is exactly what Jairus has. Jairus risks his reputation and his position out of love for his daughter and shows his confidence in Jesus to heal her. This is an example of a correct disposition to Christ not unlike that of John the Baptist who believes that Christ must increase and I must decrease. They know that whatever good is done is done by the Holy Spirit through us imperfect instruments. Likewise, the woman who touches Jesus cloak was not allowed to do so. Unclean as she was, she risks a severe punishment for making another unclean by touching them. So she approaches in fear and trembling with excellent cause. But, like Jairus in risking everything, she gains everything through the greatness of her faith in Christ. As we live our lives together, it can be very difficult. For Christians much is asked constantly forgiving, we look across the aisle at each other We go to work letting go of our hatred or anger for those who differ from us. We also offer forgiveness to those in our own families who have harmed us. It is very difficult and only even possible by the Grace of God. But as difficult as it is, it is the pathway to holiness and it makes us much more pleasant to be around. So today may we let go of any entrenchment we have anything that puts us against each other and have confidence in Jesus Christ alone. The world will begin to heal, the culture will begin to change if we fearlessly proclaim with our lives what Jairus and this woman do: their confidence in God to give life and hope where there was none. Be brave! Let him increase Christ will make you powerful and you will shine his unfailing light. Pastor s Note: This week we welcome Jeanette Housecamp to our staff as our new Pastoral Associate. We will provide opportunities very soon to meet her. I am very happy to have her with us. She is a joyful disciple who I believe will fit in very well. She has many years of experience in Faith Formation and as a pastoral minister. I look forward to getting to know her with you. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. 3 Stephen Ministry Kalama Project Question of the Week: When have I experienced God s healing power in my own life? Knowing: Both healing stories in today s Gospel tell of great faith and trust the two people had in Jesus. Coming to Jesus and encountering him always changes experience, situations and expectations. It is Jarius s and the woman s faith that a new situation with a different outcome would be ushered in by the presence of Jesus that opened the door to the new Life Jesus offered. Jarius and the woman teach us that faith is an act of seeing Jesus. Loving: There are many ways in which we can compare the request for healing made by Jairus and the request of the woman with the hemorrhage. One comparison helps us think about prayer. Jairus asked Jesus for healing on his daughter's behalf; the woman with the hemorrhage had no one to speak for her and bravely approached Jesus on her own initiative. In our prayers, we do both. We intercede for others' needs, and we also courageously express our own needs to God. We find hope in Jesus' response to both of these people, who sought him out in their hour of need. Serving: God is the author of all life and therefore, every life is sacred. Together with God and one another, it is our responsibility to keep all of God s creation safe. This means we cannot hurt or destroy another person on purpose. For the common good of all people we must work together with and obey God, keeping all of creation safe. JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE OUR PATRONAL SAINT S FEAST DAY NEXT SUNDAY, JULY 8 Addressing the Needs of the Poor: How did our patronal Saint, Benedict (whose Feast is celebrated by the universal Church each July 11) address the needs of the poor? Through hospitality. How do we modern-day followers of Benedict do so throughout the year? Through our outreaches to the poor in our midst. That s what Seven-Elevenish celebrates on Sunday, July 8: how we share of our gifts, time and talents to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters. This year we highlight four ministries in our local community, and we also use the occasion to welcome our new Pastoral Associate, Jeanette Housecamp. HELP ME. I have no water to drink and no care for my medical needs and no ability to educate my child. Since 2009, we have worked to provide response to these cries from the people of Kalama,, Kenya. We have built a borehole well, providing clean water to the community who previously had no source for drinkable water, other than the scarce rainfall in their droughtridden land. We have built a medical clinic to serve their needs. And we continue to educate their children, through scholarships we provide for high school and college education, and through an eight year project to build an elementary school in the village. At this point, our annual costs include $15,000 for the construction of another grade classroom, $4000 for school supplies and furniture, teacher salaries of $7200, $20,000 for college costs of the two students we are sponsoring and $3000. for clinic subsidy. Father Dominic Munini will be in the country in September, We will have a gathering with him to get a first-hand update. HELP ME. I need help to navigate through daily life with a sense of community, safety. dignity and care. The last three years has seen the continued growth of our Migrant Ministry. We provide assistance in satisfying daily needs such as food and clothing to local migrant communities, our main focus being the Mission Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Marion. The struggles are many separation from family, difficult and low income jobs, limited resources, etc. We generously share our friendship, help with physical needs, assist with English literacy, and participate in religious and ethnic celebrations. In reality, they offer us much more than can be measured. They are a strong, devoted, and welcoming people. As the martyred and recently canonized Bishop Romero said: The poor are those who, being alive, are the glory of God. Please help us in the support of our Migrant Ministry in giving glory to God through your friendship, shared community, and by providing the financial assistance necessary to help maintain the dignity that all God's people deserve. Gracias! Migrant Ministry HELP ME. I need someone who will listen to me as I work through my crisis. Everyone faces life crises (such as death of a loved one, job loss, divorce, retirement) that can seemingly throw us for a loop. It eases the loneliness and isolation when we have someone to talk with. Stephen Ministry is being launched at St. Benedict s. It is a program of training skilled care-givers who listen to people in crisis. Training begins in early September. Another round of informational sessions will be offered in Dougherty Hall on these dates and times: July 12, from 7-8 pm July 18, from am July 19 from am July 19, from 7-8 pm HELP ME. I am homeless. My family has no place to stay where we can be together as we get back on our feet. You don t usually see people sleeping on benches in Canandaigua or people panhandling in Bloomfield, but there are plenty of people including families who bed down in their cars at night because they don t have shelter elsewhere. Soon these families will have somewhere to turn for help. St. Benedict s Parish is one of 13 congregations in Ontario County who will open their doors and welcome homeless families as guests. During the week of October 7th we will be providing meals, fellowship and lodging at St. Bridget s Hall in a ministry called Family Promise of Ontario County. We will do this four times a year. In addition, Family Promise will provide these families with support and services to help them get back on their feet. Family Promise In the spirit of Saint Benedict, our annual Seven-Elevenish reminds us of our commitments to others and gives us the opportunity to learn more about those ministries and show our support. So, whether you come for the chicken barbeque, or to meet new staff members or to learn more, experience the closing prayer or just to gather with other parishioners, join us on Sunday, July 8, 2018 from noon 3pm on the Bloomfield campus.

While they were walking to his house, she died. Did Jesus give up? No way! Jesus told Jairus not to be afraid, but to keep believing that Jesus could help her. Jesus was even stronger than death. He walked into the house, held her hand, and told her to get up. Jesus admired the faith Jairus had. Prayer Dear God, you are even stronger than death. Help me to have faith in you like Jairus had.
