1 The sign that Jesus performs multiplying the loaves and fishes had been misunderstood. As great as it was filling the stomachs of those present, it was not its only purpose. Rather it was to be a sign that the Father has provided for human beings a way to never die a food that nourishes not only a natural life, but a divine life. Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. It is very easy to forget this. Also, it is very difficult to believe it. This scene will end with many of his disciples leaving him and with Judas disillusioned. We prefer and protect the earthly and we forget the divine. Negativity, cynicism are often enemies of the divine. To be negative is to deny Christ it is to say that there is no hope. We know that Christ is the light, yet we would choose darkness. We would rather control than submit, rather cast a spell than say a prayer. Christian life asks a lot of us. It asks us to accept a way that is often uncertain and whose path is unknown. But we remember the Lord who calls us and that in having him we lack nothing. Joy, light, truth, peace and life are its rewards The Christian life is the perfection of life itself in love and holiness. It is not an imposition; Christian teaching is never contrary to nature and it places us in the world to make Christ known to it. That is our vocation. Christ gives us himself to be the food that comes from heaven to strength us in this call. Leave everything to Christ; having Christ is to have everything and without him we will forever be frightened of the dark. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY August 5, 2018 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 St. Benedict Parish G.I.F.T. Growing in Faith Together Obedience Self-Denial Fear of God St. Benedict s Ladder of Humility Week 3 of 12 Step 2: OBEDIENCE For the love of God, be obedient to those in authority over you, imitating the Lord, who became obedient unto death (Phil 2: 8). Obedience explained In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us, as he had proclaimed many times to his disciples, "If you really want to be my disciple, take up your cross and follow me." Obedience doesn't mean just following a command of somebody else, what we call blind obedience, doing what you're told and so on. The word itself clearly means to listen deeply. And that's what Jesus did; he listened deeply, even though sometimes he found it very difficult to face up to what God was asking of him. This is what Jesus also asks of us when he asks us to take up our cross to become spiritually obedient by listening deeply to God, to foster faith and trust. Faith and trust in God are the necessary prerequisites for obedience. Obedience frees us for intimacy and union with God through Christ. Obedience makes us citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven where God s will is done perfectly and therein lies all our joy and peace, our bliss. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events. Please check the bulletin articles each week leading up to the events for additional information. 5 Page Five St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish August 5, 2018 Like Being Outside? Don t Mind a Little Dirt? Did you know... the groundsmaintenance staff is unable to keep up with the gardens that you see on both campuses: St. Mary s and St. Bridget s? This includes the churches, rectories, outbuildings, etc. We, the people, are stewards of our parish, financially and physically. Through our donations and recycling, we are already doing that. But if you would like to help spruce up the properties, we could use as little or as much of your time as you would like to share. The commitment, right now, will only be until autumn. Rethink, reassess your commitment annually. Whatever little, or large, piece of property you want to take care of would be just the right size!! Contact Maureen Gallagher, (585) or mjfpg@rochester.rr.com to know more. We can even meet briefly and take a joint walk around either campus to clarify. Some parishioners already have their piece that they groom It is greatly appreciated, although they do it quietly, not looking for our gratitude. Remember: do all things in love and that includes maintaining Our Lord s Home here in Canandaigua-Bloomfield. Open House at Ascension Garden Cemetery Open House Fridays 9:00 a.m. noon through August 31. Ascension Garden Cemetery offers a variety of options to celebrate the lives of your loved ones. We embrace the beauty of our natural landscape by offering green burial options, peaceful wooded trails, and attractive garden sections. Our beautiful mausoleum offers a comfortable, temperature controlled environment, while the chapel can comfortably seat over 200 people. You may also opt to honor the lives of Veterans and First Responders in one of our specialty sections. Please call (585) for details. Considering Fostering or Adoption? Ever thought your family or home could accommodate just one (or a few) more child(ren)? Prospective Foster/ Adoptive Parent Informational Meeting will be held August 30, 2018, at 6:30 pm. Ontario County DSS, Human Services Bldg, 3010 County Complex Dr, Canandaigua, 2nd floor, conference room 8. 6 Page Six St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish August 5, 2018 The crowd in today s Gospel demanded a sign from Jesus. May our faithful stewardship be a sign to others that we, like the Ephesians in the second reading, have laid aside our former way of life and acquired a fresh, spiritual way of thinking in Christ. Stewardship Prayer My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Amen. Stewardship at St. Benedict Parish We very much appreciate our volunteers. There is much work to be done here, and we are so blessed to have such giving, wonderful people that make up our parish community people that readily give of their time, talents, and resources. For those of you willing to assist, but don t know where to start or who to contact, please feel free to contact the Parish Administration Center so you can be connected to one of our many ministries. There are also opportunities listed in this bulletin: help with the parish festival (see page 4), help with our faith formation efforts (see page 3), help with maintaining our beautiful worship spaces (see page 5), just to name a few. Thank you to all considering giving of yourself and to those many of you that already do.
