1 The Pastor s Two Cents Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. Today is the Feast of Christ the King. It is the last Sunday of the church year. Next week will usher in the Season of Advent, the end of the holy year of Mercy, and the beginning of a new year. As we end this year our readings call us to recognize Jesus as the Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. St. Paul reminds us that our response must be one of boundless gratitude. The best way to give thanks to the Father is to pass the gift forward to others; to pay it forward! Each year the Diocese offers us the opportunity to give thanks by making a pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. As you know our parish goal this year is $150, To date we have only achieved 50% of our goal from 300 people. The fact that only 300 people have offered a gift is surprising to me because we have roughly 2,400 families registered in our parish. This means that only a little over 12% of our parish have offered a gift. I remember Jesus once asking Where are the other nine? So I must ask, where are the other 88%? I know that some of us are not able to offer as much of a gift as others, but I do believe most of us can offer some gift to give thanks to God; myself included. It is never a question of how much, but it is an opportunity for me to do my part. Since my arrival four years ago, St. Benedict s parish has achieved its goal. This year that may not happen if every person does not do what they can to make that happen. I have recently been reminded by my football team that a team can have some great individual players but if each member of the team does not do their part the whole team will fall. The Pittsburgh Steelers are on a four game losing streak, not because of any one individual player but because they are not playing as a team. Each person is not pulling their weight and this affects the outcome for the whole team. It is sad to see some players playing their hearts out while others clearly are not. While it is hard for me to write this, I believe I need to do so on behalf of those members of our parish family who are playing their hearts out! May God help each of us to remember our responsibility to each other and join our efforts to theirs so that together we can Give thanks to the Father for who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light! Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY November 20, 2016 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 Question of the Week: In what ways have you been able to experience God s Mercy and Forgiveness this Year? How have you shared forgiveness and mercy with others? Today the Liturgical Year concludes with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today is also the last day of the Jubilee of Mercy. A year ago the Doors of Mercy around the world were opened to invite all to come to the loving embrace of the Father s open heart. Today, those doors including the one at our Cathedral will be closed as a way to mark the end of the Jubilee Year. Throughout this year we have had a reproduction of the Door of Mercy from the Basilica of St Peter displayed on our confessional at St. Mary s, to remind us of how, through the Sacrament of Confession, we can always experience God s mercy. After this weekend, that display will be taken down to mark the end of the Jubilee, but not as a way to say that God s heart is closed. God s heart remains always open for forgiveness. As Pope Francis has said, God never gets tired of forgiving, all we have to do is ask. It is never too late, as we see in today s Gospel as the repentant thief is granted forgiveness and paradise just before his death. As we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and all our readings point us towards reflecting on how Jesus is King precisely because he is a merciful shepherd, as Saint Thomas Aquinas says: It is proper to God to exercise mercy, and he manifests his omnipotence particularly in this way. God is never more powerful and more Godself than when he practices mercy. This is also true of us, created in the image and likeness of God, we are never more ourselves, happier and freer that when we practice mercy. As we come to the end of the Liturgical year we are reminded that: 1. We have nothing to fear because Jesus is King and Mercy will triumph 2. That our end, our purpose in life is to practice Mercy. This is our only way to happiness and holiness. 3. That we can always rely on God s mercy and that it is never too late to ask for forgiveness. God s desire to love us will never end, everything else shall pass, except God s love for us.

4 Page Four St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish November 20, 2016 THANKSGIVING DAY SCHEDULE There will be two Masses at St. Mary s on Thanksgiving Day: 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. We will also have an anticipation Mass at 7pm at St. Bridget s on Wednesday. We invite you to take some time out of your holiday schedule to gather and pray with your parish family. We will bless food for your table please bring some food item to be blessed and to be taken home and shared. We will also collect food for our Christmas Baskets. This food will be placed around the altar and blessed during Mass. Thanksgiving Day Mass has become a beautiful and moving celebration because so many are aware that our first thanks must be given to God. THE GIFT TAGS HAVE APPEARED This weekend in both churches hundreds of gift tags are available to support a variety of Christmas outreaches, both local, regional and international. Many of the tags ask for a present for a child or adult; we have provided all the information we have been given about this individual on that tag. Some of the tags request a monetary donation (to either our Kalama project, in support of the Blessing Room in Bloomfield, or St. Vincent de Paul in Canandaigua, or for last minute requests for help.) All gifts, wrapped with the tag attached, are due back on Sunday, December 4. CHECKING YOUR INVENTORY? Have you taken stock of your personal inventory of clothes, gifts and treasures? (You know, the STUFF you received as a gift, but never wore, or the beautiful, but impractical presents you have received but keep in their original box.) In both communities we offer these items to families at no charge each Christmas, so they will be have something to give loved ones. Direct your treasures in Bloomfield to the BLESSING ROOM. In Canandaigua, leave them in the back corridor of the Parish Administration Center or at the Dougherty Hall entrance to church marked for KIDSHOP. Last year, in Bloomfield dozens of donations made terrific re-gifts. In Canandaigua, five hundred shopped at the Christmas Shop. The dates for 2016 are December 16 and 17; there are sign-up sheets in St. Mary s Church if you d like to be involved in the set-up or staffing of this year s event. Please contact the business office at NEW HYMNALS! When you come to church next week you ll quickly realize we have new hymnals! The Glory and Praise Hymnal has been purchased for our use during our liturgical celebrations. It has music that is familiar to us as well as new music we can learn. Many of the old stand-by hymns are in the book plus many that you will come to enjoy. The readings for each week are printed in the back of the book and they will now be indicated on the hymn board. The Eucharistic Prayer is not printed in the book. The priest is the one who recites that prayer as the community prays it together. Not having it printed, allows the congregation to pay attention with sight and hearing to the words spoken and the ritual performed. Please give yourself time to adjust to our new hymnal. BREAKFAST WITH SANTA Breakfast with Santa is on Saturday, December 3rd, from 9AM-11AM in the St. Mary s School Gym. The cost is $4.00/person with children 3 and under free. Menu: Pancakes, Sausage, Milk and Coffee. Bring your camera for pictures with Santa. Join in a Christmas craft or game. Browse our Cookie walk and purchase home baked goodies! All proceeds benefit the St. Mary's PTO. SIGN UP TO RING THOSE BELLS In each church there are sign-up sheets for volunteers to help with St. Benedict s annual support of the local Salvation Army RED KETTLE campaign. Saturday, December 3, is this year s date when parishioners will take one hour shifts to ring bells at Canandaigua locations. The sign-up sheets give persons a chance to indicate their preference of time (between 10 AM 5 PM) and (indoor or outdoor) location. The finalized schedule will be available on the weekend of November marks the 16th consecutive year we have supported this local effort. Some families have been participating each year over that period of years. And each year we welcome newbees to ring the bells for the first time. It has been a great way to become acquainted with other parishioners.

We humans exploit our natural environment, he said, wildly consuming as much as we can. A true conversion, he taught, would lead to an authentic human ecology. God has entrusted the world to us, and we must steer all development toward the human person, not merely toward financial gain.
