1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. The Pastor s Two Cents Strive to enter through the narrow gate A few years ago there was a funeral for Crown Prince Otto von Habsburg, known as the last of the Habsburg Crown Princes. The ritual of entry into the Church was fascinating. It was one that had been used by the Habsburgs for several generations. When the funeral procession reached the church in Vienna the Court Herald knocked on the door, a friar then asked, "Who seeks to enter?" The Herald responded with the name and a long list of titles of the deceased Prince. The friar responded, "We don't know him." The herald knocked a second time and when asked by the friar, Who seeks to enter, repeated the name with all the titles. The friar gave the same response, We don t know him. The herald knocked a third time, but this time when asked, Who seeks to enter? the Herald responded, "a sinful, mortal human being. The doors were opened and they brought the casket into the church. May this weekend s readings help us to put aside pride in titles, accomplishments and possessions and focus more on the presence of God in our lives. May we begin to let go of those things that we deem as important, when more often they are nice, but not necessary. What is necessary is to adjust our lives so that we can walk through the narrow gate with confidence in God, and humility in receiving his mercy. The way to the narrow gate may be difficult, but it is the way to Christ. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan Campaign Update We are pleased with the continuing success of our Moving Forward in Faith Capital Campaign. To date, more than 450 families have supported our campaign! Thank you to all of these families! However, to be successful, we need the support of all our parishioners. Pledges of all sizes are gratefully appreciated and necessary; however, we need to ask every family to consider a pledge of sacrifice, and not just a gift of convenience. With your support we will be successful! If you have not yet made your pledge, please consider doing so this week to help get us to our goal! If you need an extra pledge card, there are additional campaign materials near the entrances to Church or in the Parish Office. Please remember, pledge reminders will begin going out to all those who have made a pledge to the campaign this September. There will be a special pledge payment envelope enclosed for you to remit your payment in. Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, but store up for yourselves treasure in heaven For where your treasure is, There your heart will be also. 3 Question of the Week: What daily choices are you making that will allow you to be recognized at the doorway of the reign of God? An Update from Dawn Burdick, Pastoral Associate In June of 2001, I was hired to be the new youth minister at St. Mary s. I often think back to the interview I had, and wonder why in the world Fr. Mull hired me. I had volunteered to help in the youth group during the previous year, but other than that I hadn t any experience, my background being in business, not in Religious Studies. Yet every day since, I ve been eternally grateful for the chance to minister to, by, with and for the people of God. In the ensuing years I ve learned so much, mostly by walking with others on the journey, but also formally. I ve earned a Certificate in Youth Ministry several years ago, and am now nearing the end of a Master s Degree in Pastoral Theology. Together with the members of the Youth Advisory Committee we built a Comprehensive Youth Ministry program that attempted to meet young people where they were, and help them to build their faith so that it could sustain them as they mature and grow throughout their life. Retreats, Service Camps, and weekly youth group gatherings have taken up much of my time in the last fifteen years. Over the years and with changes in staff and clergy appointments, I took on additional responsibilities outside of youth ministry. In early 2013, my role changed within the parish as I became a Pastoral Associate, while retaining responsibility for youth ministry. Last year new Diocesan guidelines for Confirmation meant that we needed to hire someone dedicated solely to the young people of our parish, providing them with the support and formation that I could no longer give due to being pulled in so many directions. We spent months looking for the right person, and in the spring of this year we hired Andrew Uttaro to be our new youth minister. While my heart will always be with teenagers, I am beyond thrilled to know there is someone dedicated to their pastoral care. Andrew is also generous enough to let me be part of the youth program in various ways. Currently the most frequent question I receive is: So now what are you doing? The answer to that is a whole lot. Officially my role is to respond to the pastoral needs of our parish. What that looks like in real life is quite diverse. I do a lot with liturgies, preparing, carrying out and evaluating along with the Liturgy Committee. I also am responsible for coordinating various outreach efforts to people in our congregation. With 2,400 families in our parish, there are an abundance of opportunities to help people draw closer to God. More recently I ve taken on the responsibility for coordinating our new G.I.F.T. initiative. Each member of the staff is responsible for their portion of the effort, but I have the joy and challenge of trying to make sure we re all moving in the same direction at the same time. If you asked me 15 years ago what I imagined I d be doing at this point in my life, I can assure you I would not describe my current life, but I am so very thankful that God has given me the privilege of standing in this space and look forward to wherever the path may lead! A Future Not Our Own It helps now and then to step back and take a long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection, no pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church's mission. No set of goals and objectives include everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing this. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. By Bishop Ken Untener

4 Page Four St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish August 21, 2016 St Benedict s Parish Support for August 14, 2016 Sincere thanks for your support of the parish and its ministries! Attendance for 8/ ,549 It has been such a great year! On August 23 rd 2015, a frightened, inexperienced Colombian priest began his ministry at this parish. Today, a joyful and still inexperienced priest says; thank you for being the kindest, most welcoming, most generous community, for allowing me to share in your joys and hopes, your griefs and anxieties, for walking with me and helping me to grow into a humble and merciful priest after the heart of Christ. I love you, Fr. Daniel MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS The St. Mary's Adult Choir begins its new choir year on Sunday Sept. 11. In preparation for this we will start rehearsals on Wed. night Sept. 7 at 7:00 pm in the church choir loft. New members are cordially welcome - just come to the church that evening. There will be a rehearsal most Wednesday evenings, and a short run-through on Sunday mornings at 10:55. The choir sings for 11:30 Mass on a regular basis, an occasional special service, and learns a special program for the Christmas Midnight Mass. The St. Bridget's choir continues this Fall with rehearsals on Sunday morning at 9:00. New members are welcome. Contact the parish office with questions: CONFIRMATION OVERVIEW SESSION TONIGHT Another year of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is right around the corner. All unconfirmed youth in our Parish, including those who have completed Year One, and their parents, are invited to come to an information session in the Halloran Chapel. The last overview session is scheduled for tonight, Sunday, August 21st at 5 p.m.. Registration information will be available at this session. The Sacrament of Confirmation is a young Catholic s entry point into a fully-formed, mature faith in Christ. In our Diocese, preparation for this sacrament is a two-year program beginning no sooner than eighth grade. This confirmation preparation will be incorporated, like it was last year, into the overall Youth Ministry program here at St. Benedict Parish. The Confirmation program contains 17 required sessions. Ten of these will occur as part of the monthly G.I.F.T. Assemblies. An additional seven will take place on Sunday evenings throughout the year. Confirmation preparation also includes participation in a retreat, service requirements and regular Mass attendance. As the date of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation draws nearer, the sponsors of each teen will become more and more involved in the process. NOCTURNAL ADORATION SOCIETY The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship (St. Pope John Paul II). Please be with us on Friday, September 2, 7:00 to 8:00 PM, in St. Mary s Church adoration chapel. The Psalms, spiritual readings, prayers, and silent adoration in our Office of the Blessed Sacrament are a great way to give praise and thanks to God and to pray for our country in this 2016 election year. We have this vigil on the first Friday of each month. Everyone is welcome. Please contact the business office at HELPING HANDS MINISTRY We are very excited to announce that we will be starting a new ministry. We know that in our community we have many who are contractors or are professionals of different trades related to home repairs. We also know that many women and men in our community like to do home repairs. We want to call these gifts forward in service of those among us who find themselves facing immediate need for home repairs but cannot afford to pay for such repairs. The Helping Hands ministry intends to connect these parishioners in need with those who have the knowledge and the willingness to help them out with such repairs. We invite all, especially the contractors in our community to prayerfully consider joining this ministry. If you want to volunteer or have any questions please contact Fr. Daniel at x 11 or by at fruiz@dor.org. Would you like to know more about Catholicism? Have you thought about becoming Catholic? Do you know someone that might be interested in Catholicism? Join us for any of our RCIA Information meetings September 6, 7 or 8 at 7:00 pm in Dougherty Hall. If these dates do not work for you or you have any questions, please contact Fr. Daniel, x 11 or fruiz@dor.org
