1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. This reading today contains one of the elements of the Gospel accounts about which people have many questions. Most importantly: Why does Jesus swear people to silence about these great miracles? One of the possible answers to this question is that as great as the miracles of Jesus always are, there is a greater one coming. We remember that in Greek, the miracles of Jesus are more often referred to as signs rather than as miracles. Sign is a better word. After all, a sign indicates or signifies something else. A road sign only signifies stopping, it is not stopping itself. The nature of stopping cannot be realized by the sign, it can only signify that stopping must occur at a particular place. Jesus signs or miracles are signifying something other than themselves in a similar way. What could this be? The Gospel writers were extremely wise in presenting the material to us in this way. It is not to Jesus individual signs that we should be directed, but it is to the marriage of heaven and earth that will come about in his death and resurrection that we should look. This is the greatest of all of the signs. Therefore, it is the Cross itself in which he, himself, is revealed. The signs he performs in his ministry, however stupendous, are not greater than the reason he can perform those signs: namely, that he is God incarnate. The stop sign is not greater than the fact that I understand it and actually stop. Jesus greatest sign is the Cross; that for us becomes a sign that heaven has been connected to earth. The miracles of Jesus are hints, so to speak, that the Kingdom is at hand nothing will ever be the same. God has come to us, died for us, and joined us to himself as in marriage. As we prepare for Lent, it is fitting to speak of the shadow of the Cross. It contains the death of our Master and friend it also contains the revelation that Christ is Lord. The miracles are signs, lesser signs, and they are only understood in the Cross. May your Lenten journey reveal to you in the greatness of Christ s authority a deeper relationship with Jesus one that leads you to greater holiness and confidence in the power he offers us at all times and in every place. May we come here joyfully to say thank you for this gift. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY February 11, 2018 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 Question of the Week: What in our world and society needs God s healing? What needs healing in my own life? Knowing: What ties the first reading, gospel, and psalm together is our willingness to admit our condition before God, be it ostracizing disease or sinful behavior, and God s readiness to heal and to forgive us. God will counter whatever illness or sin creates. We need but ask. Loving: Moved with pity, Jesus stretches out his hand and touches the leper, gestures revealing the leper s inherent dignity. Jesus heals more than the man s body. Encounter with Jesus and being healed always fashions a new relationship with him. Each of us has been touched by Jesus, healed of pain and suffering, been invited to grow into a deeper relationship with him. Our own inherent dignity is reinforced by Jesus very personal compassion and care for each of us. We experience Jesus compassion and care in our own moments of deep prayer as we turn to God in need. We experience Jesus compassion and care in the helping hand of another, in the unexpected pat on the back for something we ve done well, in a burst of energy we get from another noticing some good we ve done. In these and many other ways, goodness abounds and relationships grow. Serving: Ways I might stretch out my hand in compassion are Please join us for an Adult Day Retreat at Notre Dame Retreat House on Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. Topic: Sacraments You may register at retreats or by contacting Dawn Burdick at Dawn.Burdick@dor.org or (585) , ext. 39. There will be a small $10 per person cost that you can pay on the day of the retreat. One Million PRAYERS Get ready to offer a million prayers! During Lent this year, our focus will be on prayer. As a community, we are going to strive to offer 1,000,000 during the season. While it sounds like a lot, we each pray a lot more than we expect. Ever find yourself saying, "Please, God," "Help Me!" or "Thank you, God"? Each one of those is a prayer that God hears. On we'll explain more fully, but be prepared! As we focus more on prayer, we will be offering a different gathered prayer each of the five Sundays of Lent. Each will begin with the advertised prayer style, and conclude with Vespers (Evening Prayer) at 4pm. We hope you will expand your prayer repertoire and join us each of the weeks (see the calendar in today's bulletin), but if you can't, pick one or two and give yourself a gift this Lent. As we are in the Year of the Eucharist, we will begin our prayer sessions with Eucharistic Adoration, from 3-4pm on Sunday, February 18 in the main church at St. Mary's. Whether you regularly come to Adoration, or you've never been before, we invite you to spend some time with us that day. During Adoration, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar in a monstrance, a special vessel in which the Eucharist can be viewed and adored. We are then invited to pray in the presence of the Lord. The practice of exposition and Benediction began in the Middle Ages. People did not receive communion very often, so adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was they way in which they connected with Jesus in the Eucharist. Eventually, a custom arose in Germany of keeping the Eucharist exposed to view for a certain period of time in church, which is what we now call Eucharistic Adoration, or Exposition. While the Mass is central to Catholic life, devotions to the Eucharist are also important. Through them, we can adore Jesus, pray in his presence, express our sorrow for sin, and experience a oneness with him that leads us to participate in the Mass. If you have young children for whom an hour of prayer would present too big of a challenge, consider coming as a family for a shorter amount of time, for example 10 minutes. Your children will learn how to pray based on your actions - so model a life of prayer to give them a firm foundation.
