1 Oakgrove Drive Narre Warren South 3805 Dear Parents, Trinity catholic primary school newsletter Principal Mr Simon Dell Oro Phone: Fax: On Monday I attended the funeral of Fr. Brendan s mother, Mrs Xavier Hogan. Throughout the course of the funeral the Hogan family spoke eloquently about their mother, highlighting what a wonderful faith filled person she was and the tremendously positive influence she had been on the lives of many people, coming through consistently in the eulogy was her love for her family and how important they were to her. We continue to pray for Fr Brendan and his family, may Xavier rest in peace. Whilst driving on the trip back to school from the funeral in Sale I was reflecting on the fickle nature of life. There is nothing like a tragic loss to highlight the fragility of life. The line between life and death is thin; it may be no more than a few seconds of lapsed concentration behind the wheel of a car or a twelve month battle with cancer. We usually live our lives as if immortal; devastating diseases and death happens to all those poor other people! For the most part we do not allow the fact that it could very well be us to enter into our conscious thoughts. I began to ponder what I would do if my Doctor said, You ve got twelve months to live! I have no doubt that all of my priorities would change and each day would have a totally different look and feel. It is so easy to take life for granted. We become entrenched in our busyness and those mundane daily tasks and we can desensitise ourselves to the good things in our lives. Too often we give the best of ourselves; our patience, our energy, our concern and our generosity to those whom we come across in the work place or social settings and then go home and give what is leftover to our families, sometimes a tired and impatient person. Yet the people at home are the ones we should give our best to. Frequently we walk around with long faces and grumpy dispositions because something little didn t go our way. Yet in the big picture these little issues are trivial, however, they can blind us to the sunshine and beauty existing around us right now. The hugs, the laughter, the smile at the door when you arrive home, the achievements, the meal times, the family outings and holidays, the wisdom of our grandparents, the smell of the kitchen, the guidance of our parents, the touch of a child and the list goes on. I ve spent time this week consciously appreciating what it is that I have. The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) were conducted last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Families with students in years 3 and 5 will receive their results as soon as they are made available to the school. Thanks to Liz Jones for her coordination of the testing. Last Thursday, despite of the inclement weather, the children in grades 3-6 participated in the Trinity Cross-Country event. Thanks to Catrina Charman for her organisation and the parent helpers who assisted on the day. The District Carnival is on Thursday the 28 th of May, the successful students will receive a letter home from Catrina. We will begin with a whole school Mass at 11.00am at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish Church, 496 Princes Hwy Narre Warren. Our Mass will centre on our desire to build God s Kingdom at Trinity in a spirit of faith, hope and love. All students will be travel by bus to the Church so please ensure you have returned a signed permission note. We thank the Parents and Friends Committee who will hold a sausage sizzle for the students upon their return to school. Students will receive one beef, gluten free sausage from Tasman s butchers in white bread. Please complete a dietary form if your child is not able to eat this sausage in bread, due to allergies or a medical condition, and indicate whether you will provide an alternative or will request a variation to this. If one sausage will not be sufficient for your child s lunch, please provide them with extra lunch. Please also ensure they bring their own drink. In the afternoon the students will engage in cross level activities focussed around the concept of living out our school motto, faith, hope and love. Families are welcome to join in these school based activities in the afternoon from 2.00pm. We look forward to a wonderful celebration of our feast and how we as a Catholic school community actively live out our faith. SUNDAY MAY 31 st 2015 TRINITY FEAST DAY CELEBRATIONS On Sunday 31st May, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Trinity Sunday. As this is our school s Feast Day we will be showcasing our school in our Parish, at the 9.15am Sunday Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish Church. Students will sing and enact a Gospel reflection, and participate in other ministries within the Mass. We encourage all families to join with us to celebrate this Mass as we join with our wider Parish community. Thankyou to those who have indicated they will be attending the Mass and would like to participate in some way. Miss Jans will meet with the students involved next Wednesday to organise the ministries.

3 It is timely during this time of our feast to recall the significance of the meaning upon which our school is named: What do we mean by Trinity? Christians believe that God is revealed to them in three ways God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit yet remains one God. Whilst Christianity is one of many faiths that believe in one God (monotheists), this belief in God as trinity is a distinctive feature and marks a real difference from, for example, Judaism and Islam. This central belief developed in the early church when Christians were struggling to explain their understanding that Jesus was God on the earth as a human being. Trinity or tri-unity (three as one) was a term they developed to try and explain the relationship between God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This belief in Trinity was later defined in the statement of faith at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325; the Nicene Creed is still repeated by many Christians today in their worship. The creed says: We believe in one God, the father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth This describes God as a creator. The image of God as Father has had a lasting significance to the Christian faith down the ages. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God. Christians assert that Jesus is both human and divine; this was the way in which God experienced what it was to be human. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life For Christians, the Holy Spirit is the power of God, whom people experience in their daily lives. He is God in us, God the sustainer and God the encourager. This way of trying to make sense of God might be thought of as a matter of intellectual curiosity, but down the ages Christians have looked for ways of talking about their experience of God, without doing injustice to the majesty and the all-embracing might that this word entails. The doctrine of the Trinity is one result of this searching, and it remains a mystery that God can be the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all at the same time. The Bible does not explicitly teach the doctrine of the Holy Trinity; it is rather assumed. The story of Jesus baptism is often referred to as involving all three persons of the Trinity and can be found in the gospels (Matthew 4, Mark 1, Luke 4, John 1). In Matthew 28:19 Jesus commands his disciples to baptise in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit baptismal words which continue to be used when people are baptised today. In 2 Corinthians 13:14 St Paul ends his letter to the Christians at Corinth with the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. These words are still said by many Christians today and are known as the Grace. Why is it important to teach about Trinity? It is a key Christian doctrine which attempts to make sense of Christian experience of God. It demonstrates something of the nature of faith and mystery in Christianity. It emphasises the Christian belief that at the heart of God there is a relationship of self-giving love and that for Christians faith is about that God reaching out for a loving relationship to them. St. Augustine used the experience of fire to speak of the Trinity. He said, Fire cannot burn without its brightness and its warmth. In this image fire represents the Father, the brightness of the fire shining into the world symbolises Jesus Christ; and the warmth of the fire is the Holy Spirit, the love poured into our hearts. This image helps us to see that the Trinity is a very special way of speaking about the one God: God is beyond us, with us, and within us. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end, Amen

Grade 4 Camp fees of $170 have been added to this account. Payments can be made by Cash, BPay ($50 min amount), Cheque and EFTPOS. Payments can be made in instalments. Direct Debit facilities are available. ipad News This week it was the Grade 5s turn to work with the ipad Cart and myself. We discussed how to make smart learning choices with the ipad and then we App smashed, which is using a variety of Apps together. We discussed what they have learnt about immigration to Australia, they then used a search engine to find information and images to do with this topic. They saved these to the photo library. The students then opened the App Popplet and created mind map using this information, they then inserted this image into another App called ShowMe where they recorded their understanding of the information they had researched. The students worked hard and had a great time using all these Apps. Samantha Moss ipad Learning Leader

This has been going for three years now and the choir sings at the 9.15 am Mass on the first Sunday of the month. Practises are compulsory on the preceding Saturday between 11am and 1pm. There is to be a new intake of children in the age bracket 6 to 16 years. If your son/daughter loves to sing, is in this age bracket and would like to try out for the choir there is to be an open mic audition on Saturday 30th May at 11am. You may sing anything you like for this audition - but there is to be no background recording music to accompany you. You can be given a guitar chord to start you off if you like. For any queries or more information call Clyde Netto on or him on clyde.a.netto@hotmail.com. ( We have some children from Trinity who are in the choir. I have heard the choir and they really do enhance the Liturgy when they sing. In fact I think they are the best choir we have in the Parish, but don t tell anyone! Joy) PARISH FEAST DAY IS THIS SUNDAY, 24 TH MAY. (It is also Pentecost Sunday!) There is to be a gathering after 11am Mass in the Don Bosco School Hall. All are invited. There is no charge but you are invited to bring something to share sandwiches, cake, cordial/soft drink, finger food, salads, sweets etc. Non-perishable items can be left at the Parish office this week or bring to the gathering with you. Please also wear a touch of red to celebrate Pentecost. Well for the Gospel for this weekend which way do we jump? Pentecost or Mary Help of Christians? Perhaps we can combine both in that Mary was with the Disciples when the Holy Spirit came and the Feast of Pentecost does take precedence over the Parish Feast! What do you most think of when you think of the Spirit? - boldness, courage, warmth, love, inclusiveness, power, gentleness, mystery? Why not take one of these or one that is most special to you and sit with it for five minutes. What does it feel like? What is it saying to you? How do you react with it? you? What is it not saying to you that you wish it would? ASK FOR WHAT YOU MOST DESIRE AT THIS PRESENT TIME FOR YOU, YOUR FAMILY, YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR WORLD. (You have now prayed for five minutes!)
