1 Trinity catholic primary school newsletter Oakgrove Drive Narre Warren South 3805 Principal Mr Simon Dell Oro Phone: Fax: Dear Parents, I hope all the Dad s enjoyed a special Father s Day on Sunday. As a Dad of three children myself Father s Day always leads me into reflecting upon what an enormous responsibility being a father is. Several days ago I watched from a distance as my five year old son was role playing me to his younger sister. He was copying my mannerisms, using words and phrases that I use and telling his sister about the jobs he then had to go and do because he was now being Dad. His behaviour highlighted to me the fact that as parents we are setting an example to our children 100% of the time. Our children are continually learning how to act and behave from our example, during the good times and the challenging times. Being a parent is in no way easy, however, it is the most important job that we will ever do in our lives and, at the end of the day, the job that we want to be most remembered for doing really well. Last week I wrote about how as a school we are exploring Choice Theory as a common language to understand behaviour. Over the next few weeks I will continue to update you with different aspects of Choice Theory. Briefly; Choice Theory explains how and why we make the choices that determine the course of our lives. It states that all we do is behave, that almost all behaviour is chosen, and that we are driven by our genes to satisfy five basic needs survival, love & belonging, power, freedom and fun. In practice, the most important need is love and belonging, as closeness and connectedness with the people we care about is a requisite for satisfying all of our basic needs. Choice Theory is offered to replace external control with internal control (extrinsic motivation with intrinsic motivation). We understand that coercion, a punishing psychology, is destructive to relationships. The idea has been proposed that there are seven-deadly-external-control-habits that harm relationships. There is probably an endless list of such habits but, for convenience, they have been narrowed down to seven. Seven Deadly Habits CRITICISING BLAMING THREATENING COMPLAINING NAGGING PUNISHING REWARDING for CONTROL When we relate to each other in a caring way, we are using the seven-caring-habits of internal control psychology. When we use these habits, we still use them externally, however, we are using them in an attempt to connect or get closer to someone. We recall the words of Jesus, In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12 Seven Caring Habits CARING LISTENING SUPPORTING ENCOURAGING CONTRIBUTING TRUSTING BEFRIENDING TERM WEEK 9 9th SEPTEMBER FRIDAY 11th SEPTEMBER MASS 9am Year 4 RECONCILIATION Grade 4B ASSEMBLY 2.30pm Choir & Dance FRIDAY 18th SEPTEMBER MASS 9am Years 5 & 1 Buddy Mass RECONCILIATION Grade 5D ASSEMBLY 2.30pm End of Term Assembly

2 Assembly I remind families that because we have now completed our home and away rounds of the Inter-school Sport competition Assembly is on Friday afternoons at 2.30pm. Lightning Premiership On Friday we have the Lightning Premiership for our grade 5/6 students. Newcombe will be played at St Francis Xavier, Beaconsfield Campus, the football is at Toomuc Valley Reserve and the netball is at Cardinia Life in Pakenham. Parents are most welcome to attend, games commence at 10.00am. Footballers will need to pack clothes appropriate for the weather as they will be outside all day, netball and newcombe are indoor. The children will need morning tea and lunch. Good luck to all our students. Bunnings BBQ The Parents and Friends Committee are running a fundraising Bunnings BBQ at Cranbourne on Sunday the 4 th of October between 8.00am 4.00pm. They would appreciate parent helpers. It is important that we support these fundraisers because the money raised by the Parents and Friends Committee directly benefits all children in the school. Please contact Melissa Moore on to offer your help. Head Lice Reminder As the warmer weather is approaching I ask that you remain vigilant in checking your child/children s hair and if you detect any head lice to take the appropriate steps to eradicate them and to also please inform the office if your child is infected. Regards, Simon Dell'Oro Principal MICHAEL YMER Yesterday, we welcomed Michael Ymer back to Trinity to work with our Prep level in continuing to build and deepen our understanding of contemporary teaching and learning in Mathematics. We were fortunate to be able to offer a parent session in the afternoon which turned out to be a huge success. Michael s ability to engage and promote a love of Mathematics for students, staff and parents is exemplary. It turned out to be a wonderful day exploring numbers, manipulating materials and solving problems.

4 Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Teacher, said John, we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us. Do not stop him, Jesus said. For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever isnot against us is for us. Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward. Causing to Stumble If anyone causes one of these little ones those who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around gtheir neck and they were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched. What s in a Name? Joe greeted his mother as she arrived home. Mum, I ve got two bits of good news and only one bit of bad news, he said. The first bit of good news is that I checked the lottery results and your numbers have won the jackpot! And the other bit of good news is that I gave that bag of old clothes to the charity collection, like you said. That s great, said Joe s mother. But what s the bad news? Well, said Joe, the bad news is that I think your lottery ticket was in the pocket of that old pair of trousers you wanted to get rid of. In today s Gospel there s a good news/bad news story, but it s certainly no joke. Throughout the first half of Mark s Gospel everyone seems to be trying to discover who Jesus is. They ve heard his powerful words, witnessed his mighty deeds, and they keep asking; Who then is this? People thought a lot of things about Jesus. Many compared him to the prophets, the Baptist and Elijah, but others saw him in the same vein as those magicians and philosophers from the East who often came to town with their strange science and stranger ideas. Some probably thought he was like rabbis they had heard before or the better doctors of Jerusalem. And then some had less enthusiastic ideas. People said he was irreligious, a blasphemer, no keeper of the Sabbath and no respecter of authority, a trouble maker who would one day turn Jerusalem a shade darker with more spilt blood. When Peter finally offers his best guess, You are the Messiah, Jesus does not seem particularly pleased about that, at least not in Mark s version of the story. The term messiah had come to mean so much and so little in Israel s long history. Who Jesus is for us becomes the real question of the Gospel. Who we are willing to let him be in our lives becomes the central matter of our faith. Are there areas of your life in which faith has led you to action? Are there areas in which action has led you to faith? Give Jesus a name in your life. Is he Lord, saviour, king, friend, teacher, healer or something else? EARN & LEARN HAS ENDED Earn and Learn has now finished. Please get your sticker sheets (or stickers) into the Office as soon as possible. Thank you to all the families that have been collecting the stickers so that the school may benefit.
