1 River City Christian College Term 3, Week, 06 rccc.vic.edu.au Monday, August 20, 2018 In this issue From the Principal 1 Prayer Points 2 Merit Awards 2 School News 2-7 Calendar of events 8 You God, are the words and the music. I was planning to write further about Psalm 118:1-8 which, as a school, we are in the midst of memorising. I mentioned the scripture briefly in the Newsletter last week and we shared a little more about it at the start of a day last week when we gathered to pray as a staff team but I thought more should be said in the Newsletter. As I came to write about it my mind wandered from psalms, to poems, to songs and how they have many similarities to one another. melody, You are the harmony, Praises to You I will bring. You are Almighty God, You are the Lord of Lords, You are the King of all Kings. Now I return to you, the song that you gave to me, You are the song that I sing. May the lives that we live on a daily basis at home, in the school and in the community around us, be like sweet sounding music to others and to God. Peter Nelson. There are psalms, poems and songs that have had a deep impact on my life over the years in all sorts of ways and it was in this area where my thoughts settled. It s not simply the meaningful words, phrases, lines and notes that have impacted my heart and mind, but it s the desire that has arisen in me for my life to be like a song where the essence of scriptures like Psalm 118 are played out on a daily basis. There s a song I first heard in the Solomon Islands that includes these words You are the words and the music, You are the song that I sing. You are the

2 Prayer Points As we increasingly focus on plans for 2019, please pray that God will bring the people He wants into the RCCC community, both students and staff. That God will continue to change us so that His peace and love would be reflected in everything we think, say and do together as a school community. Where there is turmoil that God will bring His peace. For comfort and healing of those within the RCCC community who are unwell in any manner. For Miss Kip and the Primary students as together they prepare for the production of O Chicken of Little Faith. For rain in the agricultural areas of Australia that need it and for wisdom and peace for the farmers who are struggling in the midst of drought. Save the date! At 7pm on Friday, the 7th of September, our Primary classes will be performing the musical O Chicken of Little Faith. This is a wonderful story filled with scripture verses, chicken-related puns, and Christian morals. This production is not to be missed so please put a note in your calendar and watch this space for more information! Class of the week is Ovens Well done to the young people in Years Working Bee on August 25 th Next Saturday morning between 8am and 12 noon we will be having our working bee for this term and I hope quite a few of us can work together at the school that morning. Please come when you can and leave when you need to, enjoying morning tea together at around 10.30am. We ll be aiming to do a range of inside and outside jobs to suit a variety of skills and interests, with a special focus on making the running areas of the oval more ready for the Athletics day coming up. We ll have most things needed to enable the work but please bring along your preferred equipment if you would like and, if it s not too much trouble, a couple of extra wheelbarrows would help. Children are welcome to be involved and work along with their parents. Peter Nelson

3 Praying for our School Prayer continues for our students, staff and families at various times and places, and we have experienced God meeting our needs in wonderful ways that we did not foresee. We are now offering an additional place for such prayer together every Monday morning during school term in the meeting room off the front office. Lyndell Nelson will normally host these times from 9am to 9.30am and you re welcome to be part of this whenever you are able. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6 & 7 Fathers Day Breakfast & Assembly Invitations should have arrived home through your children for this event on Friday, August 31 st at the school, commencing at 8am. After a short breakfast, this time will flow into our assembly at 8.55am which normally lasts about 30 minutes. We look forward to being together to recognise the dads or other significant men in the life of our students and it would help if we receive an indication of those attending by Monday, August 27 th. Please check out the invitation that we hope you have already received or call the school office on for more details. Echuca Moama Beacon Foundation BBQ Fundraiser at Bunnings on Saturday, August 25 th. The Beacon Foundation is the organisation that has delivered some significant programs to our Year 9/10 s this year in terms of preparing for their futures is concerned. Kiarra Moore, Dale Costello and myself will be helping out at different times at this fundraising BBQ so if you re heading to Bunnings, please support the cause, enjoy a snag and say hi to us if we happen to be on duty when you re there. Peter Nelson Treating and Controlling Head Lice This is an ongoing and necessary focus in communities like schools and something we need to remain alert to. We have attached a helpful information sheet to this newsletter on the subject which summarises how head lice are caught and how they are treated, including the need for testing for resistance of the lice to the product used and re-treating after seven days. It should be noted that when lice have been detected on your child, they should not return to school until the treatment cycle has commenced. Thanks for your assistance with this.

4 Master Chefs in the Making! In English this term, the Swan class has been looking at informative texts. One kind of informative text is a recipe, so we decided to have a cake-off to put our knowledge into action, and also to celebrate reaching a Class Dojo score of 975 points for amazing behaviour and work! Rowan and Miss Phillips researched 2 recipes, one for the boys to make and one for the girls. Miss Phillips then wrote a detailed recipe for the students to follow, including a lengthy ingredient list and steps for both the cake mixture and the icing. On Friday, Mrs Di and Miss Phillips tried to step back and let the students do the cooking themselves, and for the most part we did! It was wonderful to see the class working together to share the jobs, encourage each other and follow a procedural text in real life. The finished products were phenomenal as you can see in the photos below! The time and care taken by students to decorate the cakes was so amazing. The cakes not only looked great, they tasted great! RCCC Board News The school Board met last Wednesday night to review the activities of the school over the last two months and developments expected in the near future. August is a key time in the life of schools as they report enrolment numbers and attendance data to the Commonwealth Government. It was encouraging to report enrolments greater than budget and even though much work has been done to encourage such growth, we recognise and praise God that it is Him who has actually brought the increase. The next Board meeting is scheduled for September 12th.

5 K A L E I D O S C O P E S In the Library this week the Primary students studied Kaleidoscopes. Mrs Mills brought her special collection of Kaleidoscopes, as well as her first draft of her new non-fiction book. The Swan class got to make their very own Kaleidoscope, and the Mitchell class learnt a little about mirrors and looked at how Kaleidoscopes can be made. Special thanks to Mrs Nelson who came in to assist with Kaleidoscope making. - Mrs Mills

6 The Secondary students have had fun in the Science room this week. The Snowy class pulled out the microscopes, and had fun representing plant and animal cells using sweets. The Ovens class made dioramas of the layers of the atmosphere to further their study of Earth Systems. We ended the week with a game of Kahoot during Friday s Assembly. Well done to everyone who participated! The Secondary students also spent time this week pondering the question What is Science? Their beautiful pieces are on display in the Science room.

7 Lunch time activities in the Library are available most Mondays and Tuesdays.
