1 TRINITY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER PRINCIPAL Mr Simon Dell Oro Oakgrove Drive, Narre Warren South Phone: Web: Fax: Trinity Catholic Primary School is committed to providing an education that develops the whole person. We believe that the social, emotional, moral, spiritual and physical wellbeing of our students is pivotal to student health, safety, learning and success. Dear Parents, Opening of Marian Building Tomorrow is a very exciting time for the students in grades F-2 as they move into their new learning space. The students will now be able to enjoy a flexible, contemporary, bright, collaborative and welcoming learning area that accommodates for the different learning needs of the students. A huge amount of work has been completed behind the scenes to allow this move to happen. I thank the staff for their willingness to put in the extra hours required, their flexibility and their eagerness to be part of the new space. The F-2 students will commence tomorrow (Thursday) in the existing space they are in now and will move into their new environment throughout the course of the morning. Parents are welcome to join us in the Marian Building at 3pm to view the new area. Collective Student Performance Analyser Professional Development Day The staff enjoyed an excellent professional development day on Monday. We participated in Session 3 of our SPA, Student Performance Analyser, professional learning at St. John's, Koo Wee Rup. We focussed on Learning Intentions, Success Criteria, understanding and interpreting data and writing quality assessment pieces to transform student learning. I thank all parents for your cooperation with this closure day. We look forward to continuing our work with Philip Holmes-Smith on analysing our student data in line with the new Victorian Curriculum learning outcomes on Monday the 3 rd of October. This professional learning being undertaken is part of a collective of schools that we are involved in. The purpose of the collective is to utilise the skills and knowledge of other schools as well as ours to enhance student learning. It allows us the opportunity to collaborate more broadly than just amongst ourselves, sharing best practice and challenging each other. The schools in our collective are St Agatha s Cranbourne, St Johns Koo We Rup and St Michaels Traralgon. Tournament of the Minds This Sunday our students that have been preparing for the Tournament of the Minds will be competing at Deakin University in Burwood. We wish them all the very best. Thanks to Danielle Davis for the effort she has put in preparing the children. 2 NAPLAN NAPLAN assesses student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of NAPLAN provide information on student learning for students, parents, teachers and principals. These results were made available to staff on-line on Monday and paper copies of student NAPLAN data will be distributed to parents as soon as possible after they are delivered. As a staff we look forward to analysing our students NAPLAN data and using it to address our student learning needs. World Youth Day Donna Johnston has written about her World Youth Day experience within this newsletter, I encourage you to take the time to read about her wonderful time. Donna will be sharing her experience with the staff and students over the next few weeks. Year Two Hooptime We apologise to any parents who may be confused by the Year Two Hooptime being advertised for next week in the dates section of last weeks newsletter. This was an error, there is no Year Two Hooptime next week. The Year Two students have their Healesville Sanctuary excursion on Tuesday. Parish Stewardship Program Next week, attached to our newsletter, you will find a document on the Parish Stewardship Program, which is just beginning in our Parish. We are a parish that believes in Christian Stewardship as a way of life. Stewardship recognises that everything we are and everything we have is the result of the gifts and blessings given to us by God. It also recognises we have a responsibility to use these gifts wisely and for the benefit of others. Now for some of you Stewardship may be a new word but you may remember Sacrificial Giving or Planned Giving or maybe Thanksgiving Envelopes. Put plainly it means that our church, our Parish Land (on which our school is built) have all been passed on to us by our parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc, to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude. If we want to continue to keep our Parish / Church / School going and to pay for parish operational expenses such as Liturgy and Sacramental programs, including First Reconciliation, First Eucharist,, School and Class Masses, Pastoral Resources and programs, including home visits to the sick and aged and bereavement support, repairs, maintenance and insurance for our church other parish facilities, it is now our turn to look after them, so we can pass them on to the next generation. That means supporting the Parish both financially and by taking part in the different ministries that are in place. In the envelope you will receive next week, you will find a pledge card and a list of ministries (Time & Talent Sheet), for you to fill in and return. It would also be a great if you could attend our Stewardship Information Meeting on the 6 th of September (invitation will also be enclosed), where all will be discussed and where there will be time for asking questions. So please read all the information you will receive in the next few weeks, attend our Meeting and support our Parish Class Placement Requests If parents have a genuine reason for class placement requests for next year, could you please put them in writing addressed to myself by Friday 16 th October. An enormous amount of time and effort is put into the creation of class lists and many factors are taken into consideration by staff. A written request will be considered on its merits but it is not a guarantee. Who is teaching which grade has not yet been decided so please do not request certain teachers. At Trinity we work on a whole school approach and we are blessed to have a committed teaching staff who collaborate together to give the very best learning opportunities to all students in our care. Please be aware that a request has to be made for this current year, we will not be referring to requests made 12 months ago as circumstances change. If your family situation is changing we would appreciate you letting the Office know. An accurate indication of student numbers assists us enormously. We have a waiting list and if you know you are leaving we can then offer your spot to somebody else. Regards, Simon Dell Oro Principal

4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM TERM 3 FIRST COMMUNION CELEBRATIONS Sat 27 th 6pm and Sun 28 th 11am CONFIRMATION WORKSHOPS Tonight and Tomorrow 5pm or 7pm CONFIRMATION CELEBRATIONS Fri 2 Sat 3 10am and 2pm, Sun 4 th Sept@ 3pm Praying with your children If we want our children to know God and not just know about Him, we need to teach them to pray and pray with them. Prayer is simply a conversation with God. God gave us prayer so we could communicate with him directly, and become aware of his presence around us in our lives. By praying with our children we are helping them to understand that God is always close and accessible, and attentive to whatever we have to say. God is always willing to listen no matter where we are or what the time of day. There are lots of ways you can help your children to pray. One way is by inviting them to assist you in setting up a sacred space that may contain a bible, prayer book, candle or cross etc. Then begin by leading the children in praying the Sign of the Cross and reflecting on things that really matter to your family. Sometimes a sentence starter may be used, such as: "God, I thank you for " "God, forgive me for " "God, help my friend " "God, help me be more " "God, help me to let go of " "God, give me the courage to " God, one of the fears I need help with is This can help your child become at ease with the conversation they are having with God. As they get older, traditional Church prayers may be introduced and children can move between saying these prayers and offering up their own intentions. Children will also begin to pray where ever they feel comfortable. If you would like more information on how to pray with your children please contact me at school. Pyjama Day Fundraiser Thank you to all the families who so generously donated money to The heart Project and Special Kids. As a school community we raised $ which will be split between the two deserving charities. Bishops Visit 26 th August On Friday 26th August at 10:30am, Bishop Patrick O Regan will be visiting Trinity to meet and speak to all the students preparing to receive the Sacrament of in September this year. We warmly invite all families who have a child preparing for to join us on this day. Kathryn Pepper Religious Education Leader / Student Support

5 Cześć! I was lucky enough to be granted sponsorship from the Diocese of Sale. I had the honour of representing our school and parish at WYD Krakow this year. Through the week, my group and I took part in many faith enriching activities. For three days we engaged in participation at Catechesis with Bishops and youth from around the world. We attended the youth festival events across Krakow, such as music concerts, daily Mass and Australian group gatherings. The whole City was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Pope Francis. Each time the Pope addressed the crowds, his words were always thought provoking. In particular, his words at the Prayer Vigil, the night before the final Mass, struck me. A woman had just shared her story of being a refugee from Syria. She expressed her hardships and grief after losing loved ones through the war. The Pope reminded the crowd of the fact that we had gathered from different parts of the world. Some people had come from countries that were engaged in conflict, and others come from places at peace. But regardless, The suffering and the wars that many young people experience are no longer anonymous They have a name, they have a face, they have a story, they are close at hand. So after the final Mass, on our 20 kilometre walk back to Krakow, instead of complaining about being hot, and having sore feet like I did on the walk to the Field of Mercy, I prayed for the refugees that do this every day. I am very thankful to Trinity, the parish Our Lady Help of Christians and the Sale Diocese for the support and opportunity to attend WYD. I learnt so much about the world around me and was able to further strengthen my faith. Dziękuję Ci! Donna Johnston

9 PASTORAL CARE NEWSLETTER 10th AUGUST 2016 WE PRAY FOR: Sarah McGill s Father who is seriously ill; those Mothers expecting babies; those parents undergoing treatment for Cancer; those awaiting the results of tests; for the needs of all our Families, and for the builders working on the renovations to our school. WINTER CRAFT STALL WINTER CRAFT STALL Thank you to those who supported the Winter Craft Stall. Our next stall will be at the Carnival on Sunday 23 rd October! LAST WEEK S NEWSLETTER contained some errors regarding the Father s Day breakfast on the 2 nd September. I apologize for this and thank the parent who noticed it and rang into the office! By now you should have all received a form sent home with the eldest in the family. And I look forward to receiving your replies. SECOND HAND UNIFORMS: Thank You to those who have recently sent in second hand uniform pieces for re-sale. PLAYGROUP: held their Olympic sports today. Egg and spoon run; wheat bag throwing into a bucket and run; and frisby throw! All received a gold medal!! GROWING BODIES(taken from an article by Claire Burke)Fruit and vegetables are jam-packed with essential vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre needed for growing bodies. Children are in a rapid growth development phase, so they need calcium, iron and other important nutrients for all the metabolic pathways in their body says dietitian Kate DiPrima. Further, vitamins and minerals help protect against diseases including type2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease and some forms of cancer later in life. Variety, which DiPrima says constitutes 15 foods a day is important for healthy growth.they could have cereal, fruit and milk for breakfast that s three different foods. Perhaps some hummus and vege sticks as a snack there s another two. A sandwich with ham, cheese and tomato there s another four foods. You can actually get to 15 in a day quite easily! A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS : In the bosom of the family, no one is set apart: both the elderly and the child will be welcome there. The culture of encounter and of dialogue, openness to solidarity and transcendence, originates in the family. We are called to acknowledge how beautiful, true and good it is to start a family, to be a family today; and how indispensable, the family is for the life of the world and for the future of humanity.(a Year with Pope Francis on the Family, page 245 and 247.).)
