1 A spirit centred community of learners inspired by Jesus, seeking integrity and fullness of life. Week 10 Term 1, Thursday 6 April 2017 Nature Elements Incursion The Reception children were lucky to have had a Nature Elements Incursion run by Nature Play SA. The multi-sensory workshops provided an opportunity for children to discover, create and design using natural materials from the earth. The playdough smelled like cinnamon and we put bamboo in our jungle because we pretended we were going to be the panda Kiara & Alana The playdough was sharp because of the rosemary, but when you put it into a ball it wasn t that sharp Alexis I was making a pizza. I found a gumnut for the olive and I found a leaf for ham Maxie Me and Braxton made a school with the sticks Nathan We made a fire with sticks and I put rocks in there, they were hot rocks to make the fire hot Eliza The playdough was very squishy. It smelt like lavender and ginger Molly Me and Klaudia were building a big tower with the tree stumps - Sophie I made a sprinkle donut Klaudia 1
2 From The Principal Liturgical Celebrations Next week, Week 11, we will experience many reflective liturgical moments in Holy Week. Our journey will begin on Monday as we remember Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is a call for us to reflect upon our faith journey at a deeper level. The Holy Thursday liturgy on Tuesday, 11 April will focus on sharing the Last Supper that Jesus had with his disciples. During the story Jesus washes his disciples feet and this action reminds us that we need to show love and care for all people. We will commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus on the Cross at the Good Friday Liturgy to be held on Wednesday, 12 April. The passion story evokes our emotions and senses as we remember the gift that Jesus gave us through the giving of his life. Good Friday is a time to reflect upon God s great love for us all. It can also be a time to reflect upon our own crosses and painful experiences. We know that the story is not over. We look forward to Easter Sunday when we celebrate Christ s rising from the dead back to life. When we return to school in Term 2 our Easter Mass will be conducted by Year 6/7 children on Wednesday, 3 May in the hall. Easter Sunday gives meaning to our lives and our commitment to love and care for each other. Please join us in the hall at 9.15am. Hot Cross Buns Next week the P & F will provide our children with delicious hot cross buns. Thank you to all the parents/carers who have helped to purchase these and will help with the distribution on the day. The children and the staff look very forward to them. Sports Day Preparation We are looking forward to Sports Day tomorrow, Friday 7 April. It is very exciting that we will be introducing our new house structure for the first time. The children helped to create these houses when they studied many church heroes and decided upon Assisi (St Francis), McKillop (St Mary), Teresa (St Mother) and Bosco (St John Bosco) to help build our school culture. These houses will become part of our school culture and they will be represented in many other events throughout the year. 2 It is always a fun filled day and let's hope that God blesses us with some good weather. Thanks goes to Leah Bellifemini who has been working hard with the teachers to coordinate the day. The children have been getting together for practices and team bonding which adds to the atmosphere and excitement during the preparation of the big day. We hope that many families will be able to join us and cheer on their children. Please refer to the last page of this newsletter for an outline of the day. We look forward to a wonderful day with special thanks to Nicole Edmonds and the hard working Parents and Friends who will be providing a tasty sausage sizzle for family members. Those students who have placed an order will be enjoying a Subway lunch. Remember Sports Day is not only about winning but having a go, trying your best and cheering on your mates. Winter Uniform Please remember that as of Term 2 children are expected to wear their Winter uniform. The first 2 weeks of term however is considered a changeover period where children can wear either their full Summer or full Winter uniform, depending on the weather. As of Week 2, all children will be expected to wear their full Winter uniform. The wearing of the correct uniform is a requirement of all children attending All Saints and we greatly appreciate your support in this matter. Please see the School Uniform/Dress Code Policy for further information. Our revised Sun Smart Policy states that hats are also required to be worn during all of Term 2. School Photos I would like to thank Leisa Macey who organised a very successful school photograph day last Tuesday and to Marianne Wibrow for volunteering her time to help throughout the day. It takes a lot of time, effort and organisation to plan the day and their time and effort resulted in a day that ran calmly and smoothly. We look forward to receiving these photos sometime in Term 2. Enhancing Catholic School Identity (ECSI) Survey - Very Important! Thanks to those parents/carers who have already participated in the ECSI Survey. However, we still need many more families to complete this survey. Surveys are available online until 6 April. The survey site is To enter the website you will need: the website general password Ghj654 and click Login. Then Click on the To the Surveys button at the centre of the screen. Try not to get caught up in the questions, simply respond intuitively. Keeping a copy of your individual User Code and Password will allow you to complete the survey in two or more sessions. A computer is available in the school Front Office for those people who do not have access to one. Volunteers Morning Tea We have been blessed again this year with the generous time, energy and skills
3 From the Principal (continued..) freely given by our many volunteers to enhance the learning of our children. In acknowledgement of your contribution we would like to invite you to our Volunteers Morning Tea on Monday, 8 May at 9:00 am in the staff room. NAPLAN 2017 National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted simultaneously in all schools across Australia on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 & Thursday 11 May. The Year 3, 5 & 7 children will sit Language Conventions, Writing, Reading & Numeracy tests over the three days. The children will be given ample time to complete the tests. The teachers have spent time encouraging children to do their best and not to feel unduly stressed about the testing. As a parent/carer focus on your child doing her/his best and encourage effort rather than results. Pupil Free Day A Pupil Free Day is scheduled for Friday, 12 May (Week 2). Our staff will be participating in a day about our School Culture and will be led by Mary Camilleri a member of the Staff Spiritual & Religious Formation team from the Catholic Education Office. We look forward to an informative and challenging day. Building Project It is so exciting to see that our building project is well underway. The village and the courts are finished and very soon the loop will also be completed. The new building is progressing very quickly and our children are enjoying watching it grow every day. We would like to thank parents/carers and members of the community for all their patience during this inconvenient time but we know that the end product will be worth waiting for. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and participation in our school this term. I wish everyone a very happy Easter and a restful holiday. We look forward to feeling refreshed when school resumes on Monday, 1 May at 8:45am. Helen Thompson Acting Principal Resurrection Garden Ashtyn (3S) and Amelie (3H) have worked with Mrs Carter to create a wonderful Resurrection Garden. The children explored the true meaning behind Easter. This was made as a symbol of when Jesus died on the cross. This living garden represents an important time on the church calendar. You can see the Resurrection Garden on display in the Library. Kylie Sumner 3S Important Safety Information We remind families that children who are on the school grounds before 8:30 and are not in the direct care of their parent/carers can be potentially at risk and therefore we ask that families access the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) service the school uses. If you are in need of OSHC please contact Ali Clarke at the Seaford Districts Children s Care Centre directly on or make an appointment with myself if you wish to discuss the matter further. Should children continually arrive before 8:30am they will be taken over to OSHC by a staff member & the family billed for this service. I thank you for you partnership in this matter. Helen Thompson Acting Principal 3
4 RE News I feel very privileged to be able to serve the community of All Saints as Acting APRIM for a short period of time. I have really enjoyed connecting at a deeper level with children and families across the school and look forward to working with the Leadership Team over the coming weeks. We are more than halfway through our Lenten Journey and this week s Gospel Reading from John is about Jesus bringing Lazarus back to life. Jesus says - I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? This scripture passage invites us is to live our life as Jesus calls us to. Jesus restored life to Lazarus and wants to bring us to life fully and abundantly with faith in eternal life. Sacramental Program The children in the Sacramental Program met for the first time in 2017 last week to continue their sacramental journey. The children explored with their families the story of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit and how to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Our next workshop is Tuesday, 11 April at 5:30pm at St Luke s. Please remember these children in your prayers. House Structure The final names of the Houses have been announced to the children and received with excitement and enthusiasm about the Saints that our children are now representing in their Houses. The upcoming Sports Day will be our first opportunity as a community to grow our House culture and strengthen our Catholic Identity through a community event. Holy Week In Week 11 you are invited to join us for the Holy Week Liturgies starting at 9:00am in the Courtyard. We begin on Monday morning with the Year 2 s reflecting on Palm Sunday. On Tuesday morning the Year 3 s will present a Holy Thursday Liturgy. On Wednesday the Year 5/6 s will re-enact the events of Good Friday. The Year 7 s will lead us in the celebration of our Easter Mass on Wednesday of Week 1, Term 2. We hope you can come and join us as we journey through the events of Holy Week as a Catholic community. Stations of the Cross The Year 6 children used various materials in Visual Art to design the Stations of the Cross through 100 languages. They are displayed in the Front Office if you would like a closer look. It s a time to remember when Jesus died on the cross and rose again, It is a really special time for everyone - Lucy I wanted my diorama to be unique, I used actual pins and sticks to create the cross. Jesus got whipped and tortured and I wanted to show his journey through my design. Lent is a time of forgiveness and not being selfish - Nikhil Lent is a time of forgiveness, kindness, respect and generosity - Fynn Lent tells us the journey of how Jesus came to die on the cross. Jesus sacrificed his life for us & we seek forgiveness during Lent Kalissa God Bless Melissa Canil Acting APRIM 4 The child is made of one hundred. The child has a hundred languages a hundred hands a hundred thoughts a hundred ways of thinking of playing, of speaking. A hundred always a hundred By Loris Malaguzzi Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Via Dolorosa, is the narration of the final hours in the life of Jesus Christ on earth. The Stations of the Cross are a special devotional prayer to help us to recall the tremendous love of Jesus Christ as He suffered and died for our salvation. This year on Good Friday, 14 April we will be praying the Stations of the Cross in the Grace garden at SEM at 10:30am. We would like to include some children to help with this presentation. If your child would like to take part please let Ms McCluskey know as soon as possible. You are most welcome to join us in this Catholic tradition. Dolores McCluskey REC
