1 Wednesday 9 th April 2014 Term 1 - Number 10 From the Principal... Mrs Elaine Doran A Palm Sunday Prayer On this day of great rejoicing, Lord Jesus Christ, when we welcome You as our King and Savior, we also walk in the shadow of Your cross. Hosanna! we cry. Blessed are You who come in God s name to save us. Hosanna! Strengthen our faith on this Palm Sunday so that when the time comes to carry the cross we might still call out to You with heartfelt praise. Give us the grace and the courage to follow You this Holy Week from death to resurrection, from darkness to the fullness of light. We need You, Lord Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Hosanna! Amen HOLY WEEK: WHEN THE UNEXPECTED OCCURRED We are about to enter a commemorative week in the life of Christ, when the first day promised so much and what followed was certainly not the way his friends would have expected nor wanted. Holy Week commences with Jesus grand entry into Jerusalem where he is welcomed with such enthusiasm by a large crowd that lays palm branches on the ground before him. By week s end that crowd was no longer there for Jesus; only a few women together with Mary and John were there under the cross. On the Thursday evening at the Last Supper, Jesus tells his Apostles and more directly Peter, that their loyalty will be tested very soon. Peter s response to such a suggestion is, Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you and to die with you! Luke 22:33. Jesus reply to Peter is very matter of fact: I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow tonight until you have said three times that you do not know me. Luke 22:34. We all know that later in the night, when the pressure came onto Peter and he was accused of knowing Jesus, Peter denied it, I don t even know him. Luke 22:57. Two more denials followed and towards the end of the third denial, While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. Luke 22:60. The remainder of Friday was a total disaster for the Apostles and other followers. The previous Sunday s triumph was now Friday s disaster and Jesus seemed to offer no resistance nor defence of himself. By mid-afternoon, Jesus was executed in the manner reserved for criminals, deserted by the crowd and by those who had been so close to him for the past three years. In a manner of speaking, we are all part of Sunday s crowd: we are in the crowd that receives First Communion, we are in the crowd that receives Confirmation; but, when we are separated from the crowd, are we any good at sticking by Jesus? Maybe food for thought as Holy Week is with us.
2 2015 ENROLMENT APPLICATIONS 1. Applications for enrolment for Grade 7 in 2015 close for all Southern Catholic Colleges on Holy Thursday, 18 th April. 2. Applications for enrolment for Kindergarten in 2015 close for all Southern Catholic Schools and Colleges on 9 th May. We are also accepting applications for enrolment in all other year levels. If current College families know of other families wishing to enrol at our College, please encourage them to contact the College offices for enrolment packages and for enrolment interviews. CONDOLENCES We offer our condolences and thoughtful prayers to Mrs Gabrielle Fisher, one of our Grade 1 teachers, who is on maternity leave, her husband Michael and their children on the death of Mrs Fisher s father, Mr Geoff Knott. Please keep her family in your prayers. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APRIL P&F, WHICH WAS SCHEDULED FOR THIS EVENING, HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THE NEXT P&F MEETING IS ON WEDNESDAY 14 TH MAY. STUDENT UNIFORM AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE As stated in our College s policy, student appearance and how they wear their uniform with pride is an important aspect of school life. Our Student Uniform and Personal Appearance Policy, which is available on our website, asks parents/guardians to talk with their children about being the best they can be when wearing our uniform whilst at school, in travelling to and from school and when representing the College at many different events and occasions. Please note some of the essential sections from the policy: If hair is longer than shoulder length it must be tied back - girls and boys. Extreme haircuts, hair colours and multi-colouring are not acceptable Hair is to be tied back using ribbons, scrunchies, etc. in our College colours of navy blue, lime green and white. No makeup, including mascara, is to be worn at school. Only plain stud earrings are to be worn for health and safety reasons. At the Huntingfield Campus, blazers must be worn to and from school every day, unless you are informed it is a hot day and then you carry your blazer. Girls skirts should not be more than 10cm above the knee. Only the College jacket or College raincoat is to be worn with our uniform. Only navy blue scarves are to be worn during cold weather. Approved College sunhats are to be worn in Terms 1 & 4, whenever students are outside. Sneakers worn with our sports uniform must not be in bright flouro colours. COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY EVENT AND BE-A-THON Both are being held this Friday 11 th April at the Huntingfield Campus for Grade 3 10 students, who will need to wear their sports uniform on the day and bring a change of clothes and shoes, just in case the track for the cross country is wet and muddy. Further information has been issued to students and their families and is also on our website notices. COLLEGE PHOTOS have been proceeding very well this week. Photos of sports teams and other group photos will be taken later in the year. Please visit our College website, which has information about the College, its weekly notices, its educational programs and the P&F Association From the Religious Education Co-ordinator Mr Gerard Cronly GOD S LOVE REACHING OUT TO ENBRACE US Soon after children are born, they are inoculated against diseases such as diphtheria, whooping cough and measles. Their parents and their local community regard them as precious and act on their behalf to assist their safe passage through infancy and childhood. As they progress towards adulthood, they take on more responsibility for their own health needs.
3 Likewise, at infant Baptism, parents and the local community speak out on behalf of the child as the gifts of the Holy Spirit are bestowed on the child. The adults pledge to assist the spiritual development of the child until a personal response is awakened and responsibility is accepted to exercise the gifts of the Spirit in their own life. Some time ago Life Magazine carried a beautiful photograph of a mother s hand reaching out in love to embrace her new born baby. It could be said that when a child is baptised the hand of God s love reaches out to embrace the baby and to bestow upon it the expression of love. A Blessing: Blessed are you for allowing God s life to join with your own And quicken your soul with wonder. May you have the courage to allow His life to enlarge your own. May you succumb to the growth Of God s Spirit within you. May His Spirit guide your thoughts And shelter your feelings. May you know that you are ever-embraced in the kind circle of God s love. Amen From the Huntingfield Campus Director Mr Joe Sandric Last week we had the first of out new House Assemblies led by the Grade 10 Student Leaders. You will find an article by them on the event, but may I take the opportunity to affirm the Grade 10 Student Leaders on the fine work they have done this term. The assembly was full of energy and enthusiasm and this is a credit to them. As Term One comes to an end, our Music Tutoring has begun well. Every Monday at the Huntingfield Campus students make the long walk over to the spare room next to the Library and are tutored by Joel Roberts. The opportunity is extended for more to join the tutoring program from Term Two. At the moment we have a few students who would like to learn wind instruments and if we can gain a few more we can look to attract a specialist wind instrument tutor. If you are interested, please me ASAP joseph.sandric@catholic.tas.edu.au The details of the X-Country and BE-a-thon were in the Newsletter last week and are also on the website. Check them out if you would like to come along. Even if you can t, help by praying for a fine day with no rain, please! Brendan Gill and I will be sending out an invitation to provide us with feedback on the year so far very soon. Last year the feedback was invaluable for focusing our attention on the things that really do matter. We look forward to hearing more very soon. From the Kingston Campus Director Mr Brendan Gill THE CROSS COUNTRY AND BE-A-THON The St Aloysius Cross Country is on Friday. Grade Three students and Grade Four students new to the College walked the track in preparation today. Grade Three and Four students will not be able to order lunch at the Kingston Campus on Friday. The Be-a-thon will be an exciting day for all students. We are especially looking forward to having some Huntingfield students at the Kingston Campus running activities. Let s hope the weather is kind to us this time around!
4 ASSEMBLIES Our final assembly is on 14 th April and is hosted by Grade 4L and Prep O. All friends and families of the College are welcome to attend. REMINDER PARKING A sign is placed at the entry to the staff car park, thus blocking access during the following times: 8.25am am 2.40pm pm Please be aware that you cannot enter the car park during these times. Those parents who access our disabled parking spots are welcome to continue to do so via the Aldinga St entry. I am sure you will agree that the safety of our students must come first. THE CROSSING AT ROSLYN AVENUE Parents and students are reminded that they must use the school crossing on Roslyn Avenue. I recently witnessed a dangerous crossing by a parent. The safety of our students must take precedence over convenience.
