1 Ave. Edmonton, AB T5A 3K6 Ph FAX April 2018 Newsletter #8 Administration Team Message See you back on Tuesday, April 3rd School Council Meeting Monday, April 23rd, 2018 At 6:30 p.m. Spring is a time to celebrate new life and new beginnings. With renewed enthusiasm, we look forward to returning from Spring Break ready to continue the journey of this school year. In these spring months we strive to deepen our students understanding of key ideas and essential learning concepts. Thank you to all families who participated in our Celebration of Learning in March. It was wonderful to see our students sharing their successes in learning with their parents. Thank you parents for your time and support. We also thank our teachers for the many hours they spent assessing their students, preparing report cards and planning for the Celebration of Learning. We so appreciate their commitment to creating rich student learning opportunities. The success of our students is a direct result of the partnership between the students, teachers and parents working together. Our Parent Council continues to amaze us with their involvement and support. Thanks for the hot lunches, running the Scholastic Book Fair and the many other contributions you make to St. Maria Goretti School. These special events build community. Thank you to the many volunteers who add special touches to our school programs. Our community is blessed by your presence. Our Easter Mass is on April 10th at St. John Bosco Parish at 1:30 PM Everyone is invited to attend! We are accepting new registrations for the school year. Please spread the word. School tours are available anytime during the school day. Please call the office to book an appointment. We look forward to continued success in student learning and community building for the last term of the school year. May you be blessed by the peace of the risen Christ this Easter season! 2 Important Dates In April: April 3 Classes Resume April 5 - Gr.5 In-School Wetlands Presentation April 6 - Gr. 1 s to Telus World of Science April 10 Easter Mass 1:30PM (at SJB Church) April 11 - No Kindergarten April 13 - HOJA April 18 Gr.5 Immunization April 22 Earth Day April 23 - Parent Council April 25 Teachers Pet Gr. 4 s Safety Over Convenience The safety and security of our students is our first priority. We need your help to ensure that our students arrive and depart from school safely. To this end, there is a no-parking zone in front of the school during school hours. This no-parking zone will be used by our school bus to load and unload the students arriving and departing by yellow school bus. We also ask that parents do not drive onto the field on the west side of the school to pick up students. This practice puts our students at great risk as they are not looking out for cars in the school yard. Please note that Hermitage Road is a two lane roadway that permits parking in the curb lane. We ask that all parents honour the city bylaws that regulate parking and U-turns. Please refrain from making U-turns in front of the school. The safety of all our students is dependent on everyone s willingness to follow these procedures. We are also encouraging our students to use the new crosswalk on 127th avenue to cross the street. We appreciate your support in providing a safe environment for all of our children. Please Note: Changes to Playground Zones Please slow down in these areas between 7:30am-9:00pm 30km/hr every day. April 27 Hot Lunch/ Multicultural Day May 1 5 Education Week Easter Mass Please join us on April 10th, at 1:30 pm at St. John Bosco Church for our New Live (Easter) Mass. As a faith community, we look forward to rejoicing and celebrating the most important day of the Church year. We will be looking forward to our mass with Fr. Raja. Please join us as we celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. School Bell Times Parents are reminded that supervision on the playground in the morning begins at 8:15 am. If you need to drop off your children earlier on a particular day, please call the school to make supervision arrangements. We do not want any children out in the playground area unsupervised. We also remind students that they are to use their designated door to come in and out of school at bell times. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all of our children safe!
3 Scholastic Book Fair Thank you to all the students and their families who supported our annual Scholastic book fair. 8 April 2018 Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! Dear Friends, In my Christmas message to you, I spoke of the Light of Christ that broke through the darkness. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. During his life on earth, many came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Image now if you can, their disappointment when he died on the cross! That light which had come into the world seemed to have gone out but we know that the light continues to shine. At the Easter Vigil, we celebrate the light of Christ through the blessing and the lighting of the Paschal Candle. From this candle, on that night of nights, the light of Christ slowly spreads through the Church. The light of Christ is alive in the Church. We also renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil as a sign of our renewed commitment to live as Christian witnesses in the world. In parishes throughout the Archdiocese, many adults and children enter the Roman Catholic Church, after many months of preparation through the sacrament of Baptism. They receive the light of Christ from that same Paschal Candle and make their promise to live a Christian life. As a community of disciples, we are overwhelmed with joy at the rebirth of these newest members of the Church. The newly baptised are fully initiated through Confirmation and First Eucharist. Their presence is a sign of new life. In fact, they are called new sprouts or neophytes. These new sprouts are like the children in our Catholic Schools, who come to our schools in search of the Risen Lord. They encounter the Lord in the teachers and staff and also in each other. They encounter the Risen Lord in the Word of God and in the Sacraments. On their journey of faith I hope that they too will come to know and believe in Christ; to follow where He leads them. I pray that this Easter Season be a time of growth and joy in the Risen Lord! Richard W. Smith Archbishop of Edmonton
