Recently I was analysing our learning data to monitor the progress of our learners at St Patrick s and was alarmed at some of the absences of students already this year. What was particularly alarming was the correlation of absences with learning progress. It was clear that attending school every day school matters. In a school year there are approximately 190 days. Attendance rates fall into the following categories: Very Good: 95 to100% (less than 10 days absent) Good: 90 to <95% (10-19 days absent) Poor: 85% to <90% (19-28 absent) Very Poor: 0% to <85% (more than 29 days absent) To date in 2015 there are already students who are falling into the Poor and Very Poor Attendance category. The teachers at St Patrick s are professionals and experts in teaching and learning. The learning that happens in our classrooms everyday is important and can not simply be replicated in a worksheet or textbooks and is often difficult to catch up. Teaching the Australian Curriculum is a full-time job and when you child is away learning in the classroom continues. If your child is sick, then it is OK for them to stay at home until they are healthy enough to attend. Very good attendance still allows for up to 10 days absent. Students who fall into the poor and very poor category are often away because of unacceptable reasons such as birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, sleeping in, looking after children, minor check ups or care such as haircuts. By keeping your child away for these reasons you are putting your child s learning at risk. When your child is absent, it is an expectation that parents inform either the office or the class teacher of the absence. When the attendance roll is marked everyday this information is entered. If we are not notified then the absence is marked as unexplained. If you are concerned about your child s attendance and learning the best person to speak to is your child s teacher, they know your child better than anyone else in the school. 2 APRE REFECTIONS AND REVEATIONS Dear Parents As we move into the second half of term let us be mindful that teachers and students are busy completing assessments and preparing for reports. May we all practice the virtues of patience and understanding amidst the busyness of life. Pentecost Sunday ast Sunday the Church celebrated Pentecost Sunday. What is Pentecost? This is a very special time in the Bible when the disciples and other Christians received the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is a significant event in the Catholic Church. Pentecost occurred 50 days after Easter Sunday or 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead. So, the Holy Spirit is super helpful to us! He becomes a part of us when we become a Christian and understand that Jesus died and rose for us. When we're ready to try to live a life pleasing to God the Holy Spirit becomes part of us so we have a part of God with us all the time. Trinity Sunday This coming Sunday is Trinity Sunday. On Trinity Sunday we remember and honor the eternal God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday is celebrated the Sunday after Pentecost, and lasts only one day, which is symbolic of the unity of the Trinity. St Patrick, our patron saint, used a shamrock to help people understand the mystery of the Trinity. G3 will celebrate a class mass this Thursday 28th May at 9am based on the Trinity. Please join us if you can. Sacraments ast Saturday one of our students, Jack Donaldson, was baptized into the Catholic faith, at Our ady Help of Christian s Church. It was a very special occasion as both of Jack s teachers, Mrs Vine and Mrs Piper, witnessed Jack s Baptism as his Godmothers. On behalf of St Patrick s we congratulate you Jack and welcome you as a member of God s family. This Sunday, two more members of the Donaldson family, Emily and Angus, will complete the Sacraments of Initiation when they are Confirmed and make their First Holy Communion. Bishop Finnigan will celebrate the mass at 8:15am. All members of the St Patrick s School community are welcome to join us at this special mass. Our ady Help Of Christians Monday was the feast day of Our ady Help of Christian s, which is the name of our Catholic church, here in Nanango. It was in fact the bicentenary of the Solemnity of Our ady, Help of Christians, who officially became the Patron of Australia in The origins of this patronage go back to the tumultuous times for the Church in both Australia and Europe between 1800 and Have a great week. 3 This fortnight in Program Achieve students continued their study of Organisation. ower Primary ast week in ower Primary, students have been learning to: identify outside distractions that can prevent them from achieving their goals; and state the importance of overcoming outside distractions if they are to reach their goals. This week the ower Primary students will be learning: that luck is not involved in goal achievement; that the amount of effort they put towards reaching their goals determines whether they reach those goals (the Giving Effort way of thinking); and that they control how much effort they put towards a goal. Middle Primary ast week in Middle Primary, students have been learning to: state the difference between realistic and unrealistic goals; set realistic goals for themselves; distinguish between external and internal distractions for their goals; identify thoughts that will help them overcome internal distractions; identify thoughts that will help them overcome internal distractions; and show how the Needing to Be Perfect and I Can t be Bothered ways of thinking can lead to internal distractions and the failure to achieve goals. This week the Middle Primary students will be learning to: state the importance of effort in overcoming distractions; decide how much effort they want to put towards a goal; challenge and change thoughts that minimise the amount of effort they put towards their goals. identify obstacles to their goals; overcome obstacles to their goals by putting in sufficient effort; and state the relationship between the Giving Effort way of thinking and their achievement goals. Upper Primary ast week in Upper Primary, students have been learning to: set realistic goals; choose their goals; and identify daily actions they should take to reach their weekly goals. This week the Upper Primary students will be learning to: identify obstacles that keep them from reaching their goals; state solutions for overcoming these obstacles; explain the importance of commitment in reaching goals; and set and achieve academic targets/goals. Development Cup Rugby eague ast Friday three of our senior students, Michael English, Kai Wilson and Alex Cran joined with students from St Joseph s, Murgon and Kumbia State School to form a Rugby eague team to play in the Development Cup at Taabinga. The day consisted of the team playing other schools in the area. The boys did exceptionally well making it through to the Grand Final. It was a very exciting finish with the result a draw, however, the winners were Murgon State School, as they were the first point scorers. Thank you to Mr Wilson who volunteered to drive the boys over and back and to Mr McCarthy for his great coaching skills. JOE G3 Awarded for being a kind, gentle and friendly student who always tries his best to get along with others! BEA G3 Awarded for taking a strong interest in narrative writing and taking pride in the work she produces. Keep it up, Bella! KAI G4 Awarded for being enthusiastic and organised for each activity at camp. Thanks for being a great member of our camp! DESTINY G4 Awarded for challenging herself and pushing her limits. 5 G1 Recently Shayne egge taught G1 and G2 how to make sauasges. The children all had the opportunity to help mince the meat. We were all very impressed at Shayne's skills, some children thought he was like a super hero because he was so fast. Pride and pleasure in learning... G2 My Personal Best In G2 we have been focusing on students doing their personal best. Whilst competition can be healthy at times, it can also place stress on the competitive child, as well as be detrimental to the development of other children. We are learning to celebrate our own successes respectfully. G4 ast week G4 travelled to Coolum for Camp. The children absolutely loved surfing, body boarding and anything beach related. For our camp story and photos check the school website. G3 Every day in G3 we practise our phonics and while doing so, we have been working on our handwriting! Wow - what big improvements some of us have made!

BCE Connect: Please be sure to have a look at our school App. It will be another way in which we can get out our important information to you all. Bus: Please ensure you contact the office if your child is not getting on the bus. Often telling the child to tell the office falls by the way and the Teacher on bus duty does not know whether the child is on the bus or being picked up which can then lead to the child missing the bus or you having to come in to collect them. Pedestrian Crossing: We do have a pedestrian crossing that is identifiable to motor traffic. If we continue to see children crossing the road in front of the school alone we will have to enforce further action. Your child s safety is a concern as they run across the road behind cars that are reversing.
