1 THE PROVERB Called by God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to worship, grow and serve. September 2015 Pastor s Message Session Notes THOUGHTS FROM PASTOR WAYNE My goodness, doesn't it seem that every summer the passing of time gets faster. It is hard for me to believe we are soon looking to celebrate Labor Day, and in reality it will be a full week into September. Committee Chairs PNC Update Deacons Corner Worship Committee Christian Education Presbyterian Women Book Club Bulletin Board Birthday List Support Local Missions Memory Cafés KETTLE MORAINE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH N66 W32690 Highway K, Hartland, WI Telephone: Website: kmupcnews@gmail.com STAFF Pastor: Rev. Wayne Adcock Tuesdays 10 am-1pm Secretary: Stephanie Flessert Wednesdays 1 4 pm & Fridays 9 11 am Handbell Director: Emily Guderyon Choir Director: Stephanie Flessert Custodian: Sue Weber Most of you know that a significant part of my summer has been spent in dealing with my lung disease, spending time in the hospital in June and in July. In addition that, I am slowly getting used to the idea that I have to be on oxygen pretty much all day and all night. Fortunately, I do have medication now that my sister did not have, and I feel that it is helping to reduce or slow the progress of the disease. In addition to that and other meds, I am taking prednisone, but each week I reduce the dosage by 5 mg. My pulmonologist also has me in physical therapy, which I get in Hartford on Mondays and Wednesdays. HOWEVER, as most of you can attest, I am able to come each Sunday to lead the worship service and preach, and so far, most of you say that my preaching is up to par. It was a special joy to be in the worship service this past Sunday, August 23, to hear the Big Cedar Blue Grass Band, playing their Gospel music and leading us in our hymn singing. Then, the worship service was followed by a delicious picnic lunch. What more could we ask for an August Sunday! I am in the process of personally talking to several teens who are the right age to be in a confirmation class this fall. It will be a great opportunity for them to get to know who we are as a group, as a church, as the family of God that began with the calling of Abram to the Promised Land. God gave him an new name Abraham and fulfilled his promise that Abraham's descendants would become a great nation. We are a part of that heritage. As we have done so in the past with confirmation classes we will go to the Jewish Synagogue in Waukesha, the Hindu Temple in Pewaukee, and the Islamic Center in Milwaukee as a part of our learning experience. We will also have some fun outdoor activities, Continued on next page

2 Page 2 - The Proverb September 2015 such as a cookout with hot dogs and s'mores, and from time to time we will invite the alreadyconfirmed teens to join us for these activities. Looking at the full list of teens, we could have as many as 15 in a youth group for our church. I invite your prayers of support for the development of this confirmation class and a youth group for our church. Please pray for the growth of our church and the returning of church members who have pulled away for a while. I also would ask that you continue pray for me as I deal with the lung disease I now have. May God bless you and your family. SESSION NOTES: Kim Koski (Clerk of Session) / dkoski@wi.rr.com NEXT MEETING: Sunday, September 13 at 11:30 a.m. September brings changing leaves, crisp air and the return of school! As the school year begins, it is a new beginning at church school as well. Let's help the Christian Education of KMUPC by volunteering to be a teacher or helper. The Annual Chicken Dinner/Pie Auction will not be held this year due to the lack of manpower. It took many hours to organize and present the event, and we are a little short-handed this year. It was certainly a much loved event and we will miss it, but we hope to have a version of the Pie Auction later on this fall. So stay tuned for more information. There were no motions presented at the August 9th Session meeting. However, we did extend the contract of Rev. Wayne Adcock for another 3 month term, which takes us to October 31, Kim Koski will be the Elder in charge of the Sacrament of Holy Communion on September 6th. Please contact her if you or someone yu know would like a home communion visit. Enjoy the Peace which is found in the Presence of God! Blessings, Kim Koski, Clerk of Session COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS / LEADERSHIP: CLERK OF SESSION: Kim Koski (Clerk of Session) / dkoski@wi.rr.com BUDGET & FINANCE: BUILDING & GROUNDS: MISSIONS/EVANGELISM & WORSHIP: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION / TREASURER: PERSONNEL & STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEES: NOMINATING: Larry Lemmenes (chair) / llemmenes@wi.rr.com Hans Guderyon (chair) / guderyonh@gmail.com Phyllis Warden (chair) / flipwarden@hotmail.com Scott Meyer (chair) / smeyer374@gmail.com responsibility of Session Phyllis Warden (chair) / flipwarden@hotmail.com

3 Page 3 - The Proverb September 2015 PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE UPDATE: We interviewed another on-site candidate last week for our pastoral opening. Session approved another $1,000 expense of which we spent approximately $850 for air fare, hotel accommodations and dinner with the candidate. We conducted that on-site interview and were in the process of offering the candidate Terms of Call when we received an indicating the candidate was offered and accepted another solo pastorship the Monday after our interview. Again, as in the previous candidate s situation, there was not a move required. We are interviewing and considering two additional candidates at this time as well as reviewing new PIFs supplied by the CLC. To bring you up-to-date on the journey: we have received 153 PIFs of which approximately 80% are women, sent or received 193 g/ s, conducted 4 on-site interviews, 5 Skype interviews, 6 phone interviews and over 30 phone inquiries as to interest. We have issued two calls which have resulted in non-acceptance. While it is disheartening to lose good candidates and ones we have invested considerable time and money with, we will, with God s help, find the next pastor who will lead KMUPC. It is a time-consuming process and one with unexpected results but again not one without its merits. God has a plan for us and we must patiently sort it out until it is revealed. We continue to ask you for patience and prayers of support as we continue in our search for the next pastor. Joe Edlhuber, Bob Flatt, Emily Guderyon, Heidi Kemos, & Patti Sobchak DEACONS CORNER: Sherry Edlhuber (Modertor) / jsedlhuber@yahoo.com NEXT MEETING: Monday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall CARING FOR OUR STUDENTS: Please let us know the address of your college students, so they may receive periodic notes/gifts from our church! FOOD BASKETS: We will be putting together food baskets for those in need. Our goal is to do a basket in late September/early October, a Holiday basket for Thanksgiving/Christmas, and another for Easter. Let us know of anyone who may need such support from the church. NURSERY DUTY: Please sign up to serve in our nursery; we NEED someone for each Sunday. Often it only involves checking at the beginning of the service to make sure there are no parents seeking nursery care. There is a sign up sheet on the front table. DEACONS: Sherry Edlhuber, Sandy Flatt, Diane Kallas, Jan Mahaney, Frank McLeod, Jean Mickler, Judy Warner & Lisa Weatherbee.

Are You Smarter Than a Sunday Schooler? After the service we will be serving mini apple pies with ice cream or whipped cream. The CE Committee recently met with parents and volunteers about our Sunday School and Wednesday night programs. We have purchased a new set of curriculums that are contemporary and fun. We want to excite the imagination and the spirit of our youth on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, we will be suspending our Wednesday night program. It is our hope to restart it again in the future. Pastor Wayne has been visiting potential confirmation students. He hopes to start a class that will begin in September and run through December. He has outlined a comprehensive class that will include visiting other houses of worship and team building activities as well as l earning what it means to be a Presbyterian. If you are interested in or know someone who would like to join or work along the journey, please contact Pastor Wayne or Tryna Meyer. An exciting spirit-filled Sunday School year about to begin.
