1 THE PROVERB Called by God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to worship, grow and serve. FEBRUARY 2017 Pastor s Message How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men! (Psalm 31:19) Session Notes Committee Chairs Budget Statistics Deacon s Corner Worship Committee Healthy Liiving with Diabetes Class Presbyterian Women Women s Events Fellowship Events Book Club Bulletin Board Birthday List KETTLE February MORAINE UNITED Calendar PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH N66 W32690 Highway K, Hartland, WI Telephone: Website: kmupcnews@gmail.com STAFF Minister: Rev. Matthew Lee Secretary: Stephanie Flessert Handbell Director: Emily Guderyon Choir Director: Stephanie Flessert Custodian: Sue Weber I was recently asked, Why does the Bible say we should fear God? I get this question every so often and it is a bit tricky. How can we fear a God who is love? The trickiness is found in the word fear, so I thought I would play with that word a bit and hopefully some clarity will unfold. When the Bible says, fear the Lord, we re not being told to fear that God might punch us out for doing the wrong thing. The term for that would be fear of punishment. That is, we better do the right thing or God will punishment us. Of course, one could argue, it s better to do the right thing because one is afraid of punishment than to go around killing, stealing and cheating because the policeman isn t looking. Still, righteousness that is motivated by fear of punishment does not represent a very high spiritual or moral state of existence. So let s scratch that out. The fear of the Lord is not about a threatening God. So what is this fear? I was taught that the fear of the Lord was a poor translation. A better translation for fear is respect, or awe. I will tell you there is much truth in that, however there remains two problems with such an answer. One is how we use the words respect and awe in our own culture. We often think of respect and awe in mutual ways. That is, we may respect and have awe what the other person has done, but we rarely think the other person as better than us, or bigger than us. God created the universe and he is bigger than us. He is a God who approaches us in our sin and forgives. God is also better than us. The other problem with words respect and awe is more obvious. They are not the same word as fear. Why doesn t the Bible just say respect, or awe. Why use fear, which can be quite confusing? Let s look at fear again. There s another way of understanding fear than simply terror. That is the fear that emerges out of love. The
2 Page 2 - The Proverb February 2017 ancient Hebrew word for fear encompasses that meaning. We usually use the term separation anxiety, though that isn t exactly the same. So what it is like? Well, we re all children of God, and we all fear separation we don t want to live without God in our life. It s a fearful thought. But it s also a healthy thought. For it keeps us attached. It also keeps us from doing the wrong things we don t want to do things that will pull us away from God. And it drives us to do the right things for the right reason: not for selfish or selfcentered motives, but because it s the right thing to do and that s what our Creator wants of us. That s really what the words awe and respect are trying to get at. The God who created the universe, who is bigger than all things, comes to us with Divine love and mercy. That thought not only makes us feel small and insignificant, but at the same time restores and makes us complete being in God s presence. As the Apostle Paul says, If God is for us who can be against us? Romans 8:31. That is awe. But also this God has the power to utterly destroy us, but chooses not to. In John 3:17, we read, Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. That inspires respect. Fear that comes out of love gives us an awe far greater than the world could ever give. Fear out of love creates a respect that make our respect for everything else look dim. Fear out of love comes from the God of the universe choosing to establish a right relationship with us and continues to work at keeping all of our relationships alive and well though the power of the Holy Spirit. Because of God, everything is in love. Even fear is in God s love. Cherish that fear. It will keep you on straight paths and it will ensure that the love deep within your heart will always burn bright. God s peace, Pastor Matt SESSION NOTES: Kathy Lembke (Clerk of Session) / klembke@franzengraphics.com Session will meet Thursday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. Our kick-off Session meeting with our new members was on January 19 th.
