The Proverb JULY 16 SEPT. 10, 2017 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demonpossessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you. Maybe even something great for the Lord? It doesn t have to anything specific just a yearning. Or it could be detailed feeding the hungry in Africa, for example. Have you ever yearned to do something great? How well did it work out for you? No, this is not a Dr. Phil session, nor is it time to examine our weaknesses, inabilities or lack of follow-through. It s a time to look at what God s calling may actually look like. It s a time to look at what greatness may look like. Let s take a look at the poor guy in our Mark reading above. He s widely known as the Gerasene Demoniac. Even if you are not familiar with that term, it just doesn t sound good. I don t think I would want my name replaced with that for the next 2000 years. His name refers to the fact he was possessed by possibly 5,000 demons by the time he met Jesus in the region of Gerasene. With a simple command the man was completely healed. Nice story. But there s more. The man didn t have much of a history to go back to. His backstory includes not being treated well by the demons nor by the community in which he lived while he was possessed by the demons. While possessed, the man was, as we would describe today, a public nuisance. So the community would chain the man outside of town, only to have the demoniac break the chains to disturb town life again. His backstory is not really bad, but it s nothing to build a reputation on either. So now being healed, the new man has a whole new life ahead of him, and he is overly appreciative of it. He begs, Take me with you Jesus! I ll do whatever you want. It s a three-fold request: One, I have nothing but trouble in my past, and who wants to go back to

2 Page 2 - The Proverb July 16 Sept. 10, 2017 that; Two, you are the first person to treat me well, and that is what I want for my future; Three, I know there is more to you than what your humanity reveals because of the healing and I m willing to worship the Lord. That sounds pretty good. It s hard to see anything wrong with the healed man s request. But let s pause here, because Jesus turns him down. Jesus says, No. Go back to your community and tell them what I have done for you. Indeed, the healed man must have felt deflated upon hearing that. In fact, to carry our theme forward, it s hard to find any greatness to returning to a town where at best they made fun of you. Why wouldn t Jesus let the man come with him? Certainly Jesus could have found something for him to do. Why would Jesus send him back to the place of his old life? Interacting with folks with whom you had a poor relationship is fearful and intimidating. Why would Jesus say that? Because Jesus is revealing that true greatness is not found in what we do, but what God has done in our midst. This man now has a great life, because this man has been touched by God who is great. Now this man has a great story to share about our God. And Jesus has called him to share that story with those he knows, so that, through their hearing that story and the power of the Holy Spirit at work, those old town folk might also receive a great new beginning by being touched by the Word of God. This story has everything to do with us and our yearning for greatness. For we are claimed children of God. We are included in the covenant lineage going back to Abraham. Our lives are full of stories of God s blessings. These stories may not all be incredible according to the world s standards but they all are great. For the Living God is with us every step of the way throughout the entirety of our lives. You don t have to yearn to be great. For you are already great in the truest sense of the word. Your lives have been touched by God and you now have a new identity. The only question is, What stories do you have to tell. Go home and tell them. For God loves to work through personal trusted relationships. Check the web site for more information: lakeareafreeclinic.org On Sunday, June 11, Dr. Arlen Denny was bid a fond farewell as he is retiring and will be living in New York State. He will be missed. He promises to return to hear his Grand Piano which he generously donated to KMUPC. The Music Department and the congregation of KMUPC say THANK YOU! In addition, Diana Brown arranged to have two of Dr. Denny s patients attend the service: Jacob and Rees Prendergast, along with Mom and Dad, from Elkhorn. The two boys were in Mrs. Brown s kindergarten class. These two lads are a living testament to the doctor s skill as a surgeon, and he is a great pal judging by the hugs he received. Dr. Arlen Denny has more than 40 years of experience in Plastic & Reconstruction Surgery in Pediatric Medicine at Children s Hospital of Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Medical Mission completed 30 years of mission work this year. Dr. Denny has been an active participant. Not only will we miss him and the many patients he has helped in the Milwaukee area, but the MMM will miss him as well.
