1 175 th Anniversary Congratulations, JPC! This October newsletter comes to you a little bit early so that we can all get our heads and hearts around celebrating JPC s 175 th anniversary. It seems to me a little odd that I should be leading the charge, since I have only had the privilege of being at JPC 1/175 th of that time! To get our heads and hearts around this great celebration, the planners wish for us all to consider a series of questions, which will be at the center of the 175 th Anniversary: Story and Song on October 1 at 11:00am, just after worship and just before lunch that day. For me to answer these questions, I can only reflect upon one year, but I want to do so anyway, to prime your pump of remembrance as well. I will put each question in bold italics. JOY: What s one funny or memorable moment at a church service or event? I remember the Sunday morning, just before I was to lead in giving the announcements when I had neglected to turn off my cell phone. Unexpectedly, I heard Siri ask, How can I help you today? Needless to say, she was quickly silenced. COMMUNITY: Share one time you saw God at work at JPC through God s people. My wife, Barb, and I volunteered along with other members of JPC at the Hope Center. That is a lively ministry to the homeless of our county and everyone pitched in in such a way it was clear to me that we were the hands and feet of Christ. God was at work through our faith and love in action. GOD S FAITHFULNESS: What is one difficult time God brought you or the congregation through? After the former and beloved pastor s retirement, the role of this interim pastor has been to deal with that sense of loss, to maintain continuity and guide in a new direction. The church s self-study was completed in a brief period of time and hopes were to have called a new pastor within six months, but that has now stretched into 15 months. Transitions are always unknown, but there s an unmistakable confidence that God is leading us on. SERVICE: Have you been involved in any group that has been especially meaningful during your time here? Looking forward, what is one way God may be calling you to serve or be involved at JPC? Without doubt, what has been most meaningful for me is to be a member of the choir. (Continues on page two) Page 1

2 175 th Anniversary Congratulations, JPC! I told Nathan that singing in a choir had always been on my bucket list. To sing a part and hear the voices come together each week in praise of God is a hallelujah moment. I hope I will always find a choir in which to sing. GRATITUDE: What s one thing about JPC that you re grateful for? I m grateful that I can share in the great love I feel here, while meeting in JPC s incredibly rich and wonderfully meaningful worship space. To preach in a shape of the cross and to be surrounded with the witness of those magnificently expressive stained-glass windows is a treasure of the heart. Family Game Night The Evangelism and Fellowship Committee invites JPC members and friends to the monthly family game night on Tuesday October 17th. The evening begins with a tasty meal at 5:30 pm. Please bring your favorite game or join a group for cards and board games afterwards. Now, how would you answer these questions? 3 JPC Shirts If you missed ordering the new blue JPC polo shirt, you can order it now. We will be placing another order soon, as some people would like to get their shirt now. The cost will be $20 for sizes Small through Extra Large and slightly more for bigger sizes. Please let Jane Bauer or Pam MacArthur know by Oct. 15 if you would like a shirt as the order will be going in at that time. Food Pantry The food pantry is in need of canned fruit, veggies, beans, soups, pasta, rice, protein, breakfast items, sauces, staple items, box meals, cleaning supplies such as laundry soap, dish soap, toilet paper and hygiene products. 4 New Hymnals We will have used our new hymnal, Worship & Rejoice, for the first time on Sunday, October 1, our 175 th Anniversary Celebration Sunday. The new hymnal contains 749 hymns. It seeks to respond to the great call, Sing a new song to the Lord. It draws its music from both traditional and contemporary sources, from far and near. It is designed to meet all our worship needs of our church today. From its Forward, it asserts, We have tried to open our hearts and hands, to cast our net wider, to be more inclusive in assembling the contents of this collection. The historic hymns (are there), The selection of music features tunes that are both musically satisfying and singable. The best new hymns have been selected, and serious consideration has been given to multicultural expressions of faith through song. As hymn writer Fred Pratt Green put it: When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, It is as though the whole creation cried, Alleluia! There are many helpful resources, such as the Contents and Indexes, including Scriptural, Topical and Alphabetical. We will be introducing the hymnal with extended hymn sings around the four movements of Presbyterian worship: We Gather in God s Name; We Listen to God s Word; We Give Thanks to God; and We Go in God s Name. Our worship on October 8 will be an intentional model of this. JK October Mission Committee Briefs The Deacons had a successful Undies Sunday, so here are a few Mission Committee Briefs : The Book Sale proceeds during the Art Fair were $1027 designated for Mission. Thanks to everyone who made that another successful event! Offerings at JPC in the amount of $1750 for Hurricane Harvey have been collected. Those proceeds will be given to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program which offers hope and assistance for the victims of that hurricane. The Annual Peace and Global Witness offering will be collected on October 8 th. On October 8 th, Heather Stoskopf, Representative of the ERAs Senior Network (Formerly Interfaith Senior Network), will present a Minute for Mission during our worship service. On Saturday, October 28 th, JPC Members will again have an opportunity to help a senior in Dousman by raking her leaves and putting her yard to bed for winter. We will leave the church parking lot at 8:45 am. A Sign-Up sheet will be available for this project which is an example of how ERAs Senior Network coordinates volunteers to help seniors in Waukesha County. Page 4
