JUNE 2016 Pastor s Message Session Notes KMUPC Graduates Committee Chairs Worship Committee Christian Education Mission & Evangelism Budget & Finance Building & Grounds Deacons Corner Fellowship Activities Bulletin Board Birthday List June Calendar Memory Cafés KETTLE MORAINE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH N66 W32690 Highway K, Hartland, WI Telephone: Website: kmupcnews@gmail.com STAFF Minister: Rev. Matthew Lee Secretary: Stephanie Flessert Handbell Director: Emily Guderyon Choir Director: Stephanie Flessert Custodian: Sue Weber I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me John 10:14 Funny thing about this verse it is not just spiritually true in terms of our relationship with Christ Jesus, it literally true about sheep as well. I began my ministry in Montana where I had the opportunity to spend time with a sheep rancher. On one such occasion, I volunteered to help move groups of sheep though a chute and into their stalls. With calm, slow gestures and voice the rancher showed me how it was done, explaining that sheep get nervous pretty easily and not to make sudden moves. Seemed like a piece of cake. Then the rancher turned toward me, and said, One last thing the sheep wont respond to you until they get to know ya. And so my sheep tending experience began: slowly moving toward the sheep in the same manner as taught as they just stood there facing me. Then when they perceived that I got too close, several of them would burst into a run towards me as they tried to escape. It was a long and tiring experience, but it got easier as the day went on. Jesus knew a thing or two about sheep. He also knew a thing or two about us as well. I suppose that might be why he added that he as the Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. It s hard not to follow one who cares and protects us even to the point death. But Jesus doesn t just give his life for us. He also gives us a new life to live. A new way to live. Yet, that sheepish side doesn t just go away. Jesus called Peter to tend to his sheep to feed his sheep. He was called to step into the role Jesus once filled along with the rest of the disciples. Some places were easier than others, yet God s Holy Spirit kept working in the midst of it all. God s transforming work in their midst kept enabling them to grow and live to their full potential. God has now called us to journey together in faith and ministry. Much excitement surrounds our new beginnings, and our family joins you in that excitement. It is good to be here. Yet as the new shepherd here, there has to be some sheepish questions in the midst of the excitement. How will he compare to our past pastors? Will our future be as wonderful as I hope? Will things return to the glorious times I remember? Such questions are only natural. Until we get to know each other better, we tend to wonder and worry a lot as we look for some sense of security in the midst of the unknowns. But Jesus told us to worry not about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. So let us not worry and wonder too much in our joyful excitement. Let us grab hold of what is concrete our time we have to get to know each other. Let us share our stories as we do God s good work together. Let us discover who we are as well as what we can each do. But let us also not forget who truly is the Good Shepherd who has called us together and sends the Holy Spirit into our midst. For it is God s transforming work that will enable us to grow and live up to our full potential. In Christ, Pastor Matt
2 Page 2 - The Proverb June 2016 SESSION NOTES: Kim Koski (Clerk of Session) / dkoski@wi.rr.com Do you feel it? Excitement is in the air! The Lee family has moved into the manse and Pastor Matt has begun leading worship. We feel so blessed to have this new beginning at KMUPC. Our first Session Meeting was a good time for Matt and the Elders to get to know each other better and share our ideas for the future. Matt asked us to identify the strengths of our church, and to focus on them, because our strengths matter more than our weaknesses. We felt that our top 3 strengths were mission, music and fellowship/hospitality. Matt is ready to jump right in and be involved in the life of KMUPC. There were no Motions at the May 19th Session Meeting. Hans Guderyon will be the Elder in charge of the Sacrament of Holy Communion on June 5th. Please let him know if you or someone you know would like a home communion visit. Enjoy the Peace which is found in the Presence of God! 4 Page 4 - The Proverb June 2016 MISSION & EVANGELISM COMMITTEE: Phyllis Warden (chair) / flipwarden@hotmail.com Next Meeting: Monday, June 13 at 9 a.m. Mission and Evangelism Committee meets monthly throughout the year on the second Monday of the month at 9:00 AM at KMUPC. HOPE CENTER Hope Center in Waukesha is one of the local mission groups KMUPC has been supporting for many years. Here, from their website, in their words, is what they are about: All of our programs focus on the prevention of homelessness. There is no greater need than reliable shelter to instill hope and provide a foundation to build on. There is no greater requirement than everyone being treated with respect and equality. Whether it s a meal at our Outreach Meal Program or Day Center, clean like-new clothing from our Clothing Shop, furniture and/or appliances from our Project Move, or Financial Aid, all is provided free of charge and delivered in a respectful and welcoming manner. What started in 1987 as a small group of pastors from the Waukesha area has grown into a mission supported by area congregations, local businesses, and individuals. Hope Center has been helping local families with their basic needs of financial aid, food, clothing, and furniture for almost twenty-eight years, free of charge. In April committee members and volunteers from the church served a meal at the Hope Center in Waukesha. Hope Center receives donations of food from area suppliers and relies on volunteers to serve meals and clean up. Those who helped in April were Larry and Gretchen Lemmenes, Art Schneidewind, Judy Warner, Jean Mickler, and Larry's son-in-law and grandson, David and Oliver devogel. KMUPC will serve at Hope Center again on August 5th. Please consider spending a few hours with friends from church that Friday evening. Talk to any of those who have already served, and see what they have to say about the experience. BREAD OF LIFE And Jesus said unto them, "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John 6:35) KMUPC is one of a number of churches involved in a monthly community meal that is served at St. Charles Catholic Church, 313 Circle Drive in Hartland This is the meal that used to be offered at St. Anskar's Episcopal Church. The Lake Country Bread of Life Community Meal is a program designed to meet the needs of those who would like to be fed or have their lives enriched. Any who wish may come to receive nourishment for their body, enrichment for their life, strength for their soul. Once or twice a year we provide the meal that now serves approximately 100 people. The meals are held on the fourth Thursday of the month. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. On May 26th KMUPC and the Lake Country Universalist Unitarian Church provided a delicious meal of Sloppy Joes, baked beans, carrots & celery, chips and cupcakes. Several volunteers from LCUUC, along with Pat Froebel, Sue Shultis, Don Goerke, Judy Warner, Larry and Gretchen Lemmenes, Pastor Matt and Phyllis Warden worked at the site. In addition, Helen Cummins chopped about a ton of celery (thank you, Helen!) and Joe Edlhuber and Larry Lemmenes cooked enormous quantities of Sloppy Joes that were universally appreciated. Are you interested in this mission work? Talk to anyone on Mission and Evangelism (Judy Warner, Larry Lemmenes, Helen Cummins, Phyllis Warden) or any who have already served, to find out how you might participate!
