PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 8240 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri Office: Fax: (844) Grow in Peace Child Care Center: (816) Title Name Phone Pastor David M. Rolf (816) Dir. Child Care Carla Hamilton (816) Music Director Luke Nicolay (316) Secretary Deb Baldwin (816) PRAYER UPON ENTERING CHURCH Father, I pray for a spirit of cooperation and eagerness to contribute to the needs of the whole body, so that Your Church is built not just with sweat, bricks, and mortar but with love, integrity, care, and cooperative teamwork. Therefore, we go forth in unity and purpose as we do our part in building each other up as we encourage others to use their God-given talents and acquired skills, all the while striving for unity in the faith. In our service we desire to please You even as we serve and strengthen one another. In the name of Jesus, we go forth in faithful service. Amen. WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN While we might consider ourselves relatively good the fact is we are naturally opposed to God and His plan for our lives. This nature and the things we do because of this nature result in sin. But God loves us and has overcome sin for us. He did this by sending His Son, Jesus, to bridge the gap created by sin. Now we are no longer separated from God because Jesus has brought us back together: God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their sins against them. (II Corinthians 5: 19) The one who believes this is a Christian. REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION. Members of sister Lutheran congregations are, of course, invited to join us at the Lord's Table. Others are requested to consult with the Pastor before communing with us the first time. In this way you will help us be responsible in our administration of the Sacrament and you, in turn, will be blessed as you commune with us. NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with nonalcohol wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or wish to abstain from alcohol for personal reasons. The Mission of Peace Lutheran Church is to equip and encourage Christ s followers to grow in faith, share their faith and 1 live out their faith.

Prelude The Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost Divine Service Setting One, page 151 August 5, 2018 Opening Hymn LSB 912 "Christ Is Our Cornerstone" 1 Christ is our cornerstone, On Him alone we build; With His true saints alone The courts of heav n are filled. On His great love Our hopes we place Of present grace And joys above. 2 Here may we gain from heav n The grace which we implore, And may that grace, once giv n, Be with us evermore Until that day When all the blest To endless rest Are called away. 3 Oh, then, with hymns of praise These hallowed courts shall ring; Our voices we will raise The Three in One to sing And thus proclaim In joyful song, Both loud and long, That glorious name. 4 Invocation P C In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Confession and Absolution P C P C P C If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 3

Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Merciful Father, You gave Your Son Jesus as the heavenly bread of life. Grant us faith to feast on Him in Your Word and Sacraments that we may be nourished unto life everlasting; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Sit Old Testament Reading Exodus 16: And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and 6

the people of Israel said to them, Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger. 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily. 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us? 8 And Moses said, When the LORD gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD. 9 Then Moses said to Aaron, Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling. 10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 And the LORD said to Moses, 12 I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God. 13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to 7

one another, What is it? For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. P C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle Ephesians 4: I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ s gift. 8 Therefore it says, When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men. 9 (In saying, He ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the 8

head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. P C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Stand Common Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel John 6:22-35 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. 22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where 9

they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? 26 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal. 28 Then they said to him, What must we do, to be doing the works of God? 29 Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent. 30 So they said to him, Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32 Jesus then said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. 34 They said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. 35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Sit 10

Hymn of the Day LSB 601 All Who Believe and Are Baptized 1 All who believe and are baptized Shall see the Lord s salvation; Baptized into the death of Christ, They are a new creation. Through Christ s redemption they shall stand Among the glorious, heav nly band Of ev ry tribe and nation. 2 With one accord, O God, we pray: Grant us Your Holy Spirit. Help us in our infirmity Through Jesus blood and merit. Grant us to grow in grace each day That by this sacrament we may Eternal life inherit. Public domain Sermon "The One" Ephesians 4:1-16 Stand Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, 11

very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord Amen. T SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT T Preface 13

P It is truly good, right, and salutary with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus 14

Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 15

The Words of Our Lord P P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei 16

Alleluia! 5 Mighty Victim from the sky, Hell s fierce pow rs beneath You lie; You have conquered in the fight, You have brought us life and light. 20 LSB 556 "Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice" 1 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, With exultation springing, And with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God has done, How His right arm the vict ry won. What price our ransom cost Him! 2 Fast bound in Satan s chains I lay; Death brooded darkly o er me. Sin was my torment night and day; In sin my mother bore me. But daily deeper still I fell; My life became a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me. 3 My own good works all came to naught, No grace or merit gaining; Free will against God s judgment fought, Dead to all good remaining. My fears increased till sheer despair Left only death to be my share; The pangs of hell I suffered. 4 But God had seen my wretched state Before the world s foundation, And mindful of His mercies great, He planned for my salvation. He turned to me a father s heart; He did not choose the easy part But gave His dearest treasure. 5 God said to His belovèd Son: It s time to have compassion. 19

Then go, bright jewel of My crown, And bring to all salvation. From sin and sorrow set them free; Slay bitter death for them that they May live with You forever. 6 The Son obeyed His Father s will, Was born of virgin mother; And God s good pleasure to fulfill, He came to be my brother. His royal pow r disguised He bore; A servant s form, like mine, He wore To lead the devil captive. 7 To me He said: Stay close to Me, I am your rock and castle. Your ransom I Myself will be; For you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, and you are Mine, And where I am you may remain; The foe shall not divide us. 8 Though he will shed My precious blood, Me of My life bereaving, All this I suffer for your good; Be steadfast and believing. Life will from death the vict ry win; My innocence shall bear your sin, And you are blest forever. 9 Now to My Father I depart, From earth to heav n ascending, And, heavn ly wisdom to impart, The Holy Spirit sending; In trouble He will comfort you 20

And teach you always to be true And into truth shall guide you. 10 What I on earth have done and taught Guide all your life and teaching; So shall the kingdom s work be wrought And honored in your preaching. But watch lest foes with base alloy The heav nly treasure should destroy; This final word I leave you. Public domain LSB 652 "Father, We Thank Thee" 1 Father, we thank Thee who hast planted Thy holy name within our hearts. Knowledge and faith and life immortal Jesus, Thy Son, to us imparts. Thou, Lord, didst make all for Thy pleasure, Didst give us food for all our days, Giving in Christ the Bread eternal; Thine is the pow r, be Thine the praise. 2 Watch o er Thy Church, O Lord, in mercy, Save it from evil, guard it still, Perfect it in Thy love, unite it, Cleansed and conformed unto Thy will. As grain, once scattered on the hillsides, Was in this broken bread made one, So from all lands Thy Church be gathered Into Thy kingdom by Thy Son. The Church Pension Fund. Closing HymnLSB 812 "Come, let us join our cheerful songs" 1 Come, let us join our cheerful songs With angels round the throne; Ten thousand thousand are their tongues, But all their joys are one. 2 Worthy the Lamb that died, they cry, To be exalted thus! Worthy the Lamb, our lips reply, For He was slain for us! 3 Jesus is worthy to receive Honor and pow r divine; And blessings more than we can give Be, Lord, forever Thine. 4 Let all creation join in one To bless the sacred name Of Him who sits upon the throne And to adore the Lamb. 30 Growing in Wisdom and in Grace at GIP... One day, Jesus came to John the Baptist. Jesus wanted John to baptize Him. John was surprised. He knew that Jesus was God s Son. He knew that Jesus had never done anything wrong. Jesus didn t have any sins to wash away! John told Jesus, You should baptize me. I am sinful, not You. Jesus told John, You must do as I ask. God, My Father in heaven, wants you to baptize Me, and I want to obey Him. God wanted everyone to know that Jesus was the one He had sent to save people from their sins. When John heard this, he took Jesus into the river and baptized Him. After Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit came from heaven in the form of a dove and rested on Jesus. Then God the Father spoke from heaven and said, This is my Son, whom I love. I am happy with Him. Jesus was baptized to show He was the Son of God who came to earth to take away our sins. Jesus lived His life perfectly. He did what we could not do. In Baptism, God washes away our sin and gives us new life. (One in Christ - week 49) Be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ. Acts 2:38 Activities: Jesus Baptism Story time Washed away (Chalk) Art Jump for Joy - Music 29

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY 9:45 AM STUDY OF THE BOOK OF ACTS. THE BOOK OF ACTS IS A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF THE EARLY DISCIPLES AS THEY FORMED THE EARLY CHURCH AND SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS. LUKE A DOCTOR WHO TRAVELED ALONG ON SOME OF THESE ADVENTURES TELLS THE STORY IN AN INTERESTING, ACCURATE AND RELIABLE WAY. WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY 6:30 PM STUDY OF THE BOOK OF ECCLESIASTES. THE BOOK IS A MUSING BY A KING OF JERUSALEM AS HE RELATES HIS EXPERIENCES AND DRAWS LESSONS FROM THEM, OFTEN SELF-CRITICAL. THE AUTHOR, INTRODUCING HIMSELF AS THE SON OF DAVID, DISCUSSES THE MEANING OF LIFE AND THE BEST WAY TO LIVE. HE PROCLAIMS ALL THE ACTIONS OF MAN TO BE INHERENTLY HEVEL, MEANING "VAIN" OR "FUTILE", ("MERE BREATH"), AS BOTH WISE AND FOOLISH END IN DEATH. BOOK CLEARLY ENDORSES WISDOM AS A MEANS FOR A WELL-LIVED EARTHLY LIFE. THE BOOK CONCLUDES WITH THE INJUNCTION: "FEAR GOD, AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS; FOR THAT IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF EVERYONE"(12:13). ECCLESIASTES HAS HAD A DEEP INFLUENCE ON WESTERN LITERATURE. IT CONTAINS SEVERAL PHRASES THAT HAVE RESONATED IN BRITISH AND AMERICAN CULTURE, AND WAS QUOTED BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN ADDRESSING CONGRESS IN AMERICAN NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE WROTE: "OF ALL I HAVE EVER SEEN OR LEARNED, THAT BOOK SEEMS TO ME THE NOBLEST, THE WISEST, AND THE MOST POWERFUL EXPRESSION OF MAN'S LIFE UPON THIS EARTH AND ALSO THE HIGHEST FLOWER OF POETRY, ELOQUENCE, AND TRUTH. I AM NOT GIVEN TO DOGMATIC JUDGMENTS IN THE MATTER OF LITERARY CREATION, BUT IF I HAD TO MAKE ONE I COULD SAY THAT ECCLESIASTES IS THE GREATEST SINGLE PIECE OF WRITING I HAVE EVER KNOWN, AND THE WISDOM EXPRESSED IN IT THE MOST LASTING AND PROFOUND." 30
