3 All Saints Sunday Nov. 5th RECAP On All Saints Day we will gather together to remember and honor the founders and sustainers of The Parish -- one church, one body -- jointed by history and circumstance in our small community. For more than 135 years, local Presbyterians and the Christian Disciples joined in mutual aid when buildings collapsed, when money ran short, when there were wars and hard financial times. Together, we shared the good times and stressful times, always lifting one another up, always extending a helping hand. But we have never really been apart. For more than two hundred years, our two denominations have shared one path, like two good friends walking together down the same narrow road, our hands reaching out to one another to touch, comfort, help, encourage, and to share. At The Parish this All Saints Sunday we will honor the founders of both churches and trace their paths from the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys to frontier Texas. These churches didn't just happen. Through diligence and sacrifice, these saints -- our saints -- left us a legacy -- and a challenge to "go and do likewise." All Saints Day originated with the Roman Catholic Church in the 8th Century as a day to honor all departed saints. The official date of November 1 was set in the year 835 by Pope Gregory IV. Martin Luther, who chose All Saints Eve in 1517 to nail his 95 thesis to the church house door which led to the formation of protestant churches. Today, in The Parish, we take this November day to remember we are not alone in our journey, but join a great company of believers united in a common faith in Jesus Christ, the son of God, both in this little community and the world. 4 It's hard to believe it's already November! Soon, Jacksboro schools will be in their last six weeks for With the year winding down, we get an opportunity to reflect on what God has been up to in, on, and through each of us. So, for the next several weeks, we're focusing on big questions that we often have of our relationship with God. We're looking at guilt, doubting, hypocrisy, and our potential to grow. If we face these questions head on, we can grow as we figure them out together! I also want to encourage you to follow us on Facebook if you aren't already doing so. Our page, United Christian Youth Fellowship in Jacksboro, has weekly updates with what we're doing and a monthly calendar with more details. Peace, Oct. 5 Mark your calendar!! The Hanging of the Greens at the Jacksboro Parish will be on Saturday, December 2nd in the sanctuary. The time will be announced closer to that date! It is a fun gathering of friends to help make our setting more beautiful for the Advent and Christmas Season. Of course, refreshments will be provided! We hope you will join us for All Saints' Sunday on November 5th as we celebrate those special people who influenced us, loved us, and who have brought us to this time in the life of The Parish. The Worship Committee will meet following the church service on November 5th for our quarterly meeting. Snacks will be provided. 6 Women's Small Group Soul Support Nov. 15th Noon Salmon home Lead by Lois Paschal Graceists & M2 will not meet in November. CONCERNED CITIZENS THANKSGIVING MEAL We will once again prepare Thanksgiving meals on Thursday, November 23th at the Concerned Citizens. Last year we served 108 meals. We will need volunteers to cook cornbread and turkeys, help prepare the meal that morning, and drivers to deliver the meals. Monetary donations are also needed for supplies. Please contact Tina Mower at or if you are able to help.

7 From the very beginnings of the Christian movement, Disciples and Presbyterians have founded institutions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. We are still committed to higher education, as we have current students and professors in our congregations and members who continue to serve higher education by serving on foundations and boards. On November 19, our church will collect the Thanksgiving offering. Your gift to the Thanksgiving offering helps to support the work of our institutions of higher learning in many ways: financially supporting Disciples and Presbyterian related schools, providing undergraduate scholarships and support for spiritual life offices, and providing scholarships and support for those pursuing theological education. This November, please give generously to this year s Thanksgiving offering. Your gifts make a world of difference as we continue our legacy of supporting education and our institutions of higher learning.

8 MDO Xtreme Our MDO students explored the Autumn season this past month by painting with vegetables, creating art with leaves, carving pumpkins, doing Science experiments with pumpkins and baking soda, practicing letter recognition with candy corn, and much more! Our curriculum weeks were focused on Healthy Eating, Leaves, Harvest Time, and Spooky Fun! Our annual Fall Festival was on Halloween and the children had a blast playing games, creating masks, and getting their faces painted! We were blessed with several families joining in the fun! During the next week, our older classes are going to plant wheat, sweet potatoes, and lima beans to experience the growing process of plants. A generous THANK YOU goes to LOIS PASCHAL for donating the supplies necessary to make this happen. We can t wait to see the pride and excitement on our student s faces as they grow their own plants! 9 From the desk of. Rev. Dr. Suzanne Castle Recently we had (3) powerful speakers talk to us about generosity. I hope you heard the passion from Clint Strickland as he laid out what a generous place we are for youth and mission. I hope you heard John Hackley talk about our legacy and our future hopes. And we had such an overwhelming response to the personal story Lois Paschal shared about the impact of generous congregations that I thought I would repeat it here: I don't think I have ever in my adult years known a more generous group of people than those in the two churches that have joined to form The Parish. When I look back on history of the 137 plus years of their existence, I see the records show over and over that members have stepped forward to build and grow. Sometimes it looked hopeless. Those churches often had no building to meet in. Sometimes there were as few as five regular members and no money to pay a minister. But they survived, grew, built and most of all, they served. Now here we are working to build again, to expand, to reach out, to do more. Who will benefit? A bunch of kids who will just grow up and move away? Please allow me to reflect on the last years of my childhood. My family broke apart and my brothers went to war. The one thing I had even though I didn't know it at the time, was a group of ladies, much like I see here in The Parish, who turned the basement of our little Baptist Church into a refuge, a safe place to meet, to play games, to laugh and be silly. Those ladies baked cookies, made sandwiches and lemonade and offered a dry handkerchief and an understanding hug when we needed it. Without those women I don't know really what I would have done to make it through those six or seven years. And I have to mention that Grace Simpson -- I think some of you will remember her -- was teaching Sunday School here when my 62 year old son was in his early teens, hard times for him. She was in her mid-eighties. To this day he smiles when her name is mentioned and reminisces on how special her Sunday School class lessons were. We here in the Parish can't possibly guess what these young people need now or in the future. We think we do, but I think no one really knows, not even that young person trying to become all grown up. But I do know this. Those women in my life planted a seed that grew and continues to grow. We can continue to build this church and plant the seeds that will grow far into the future. Watching this building expand and thinking of the youth who will meet in fellowship here assures me that The Parish will thrive just as it always has.
