1 We sing the final HYMN God! When human bonds are broken and we lack the love or skill to restore the hope of healing, give us grace and make us still. Through that stillness, with your Spirit come into our world of stress, for the sake of Christ forgiving all the failures we confess. You in us are bruised and broken: hear us as we seek release from the pain of earlier living; set us free and grant us peace. Send us, God of new beginnings, humbly hopeful into life. 2 PLEASE READ THESE NOTES BEFORE THE SERVICE BEGINS The Church s Ministry of Healing In his own ministry, Jesus gave high priority to healing the sick. The same concern has always found expression in the ministry of the Church through the Eucharist in the prayers for the sick, and the personal love and care offered by individual Christians. This ministry has continued over the centuries in many churches. The Laying-on-of-hands Among the ways in which the Church exercises this ministry of love and care is through the laying on of hands. This is done by a priest/minister and others who believe themselves to be called to this particular ministry. They are not healers ; they represent the whole Body of Christ (his Church) surrounding you with His love and prayer. Any of us may receive this gift from God when we believe there is need of the healing power of the Spirit of God. The role of the healing ministry alongside medicine This ministry is in no sense offered as an alternative to medical care. healing comes from God, whether brought about by the skill and care of doctors and nurses, through prayer, through special services, or through healing words or a healing touch. The healing and wholeness and well-being of the whole person It is a ministry that reflects Jesus concern and promise for the whole person - body, mind and spirit. That is why this service is called a service of wholeness. Recovery from disease is one aspect of this wholeness; another is the possibility of being enabled by God to accept illness or disability. Beyond our search for individual healing there is also a need for healing in human society, scarred as it is by war injustice and oppression. Reconciliation, right relationships and forgiveness The Church s ministry of healing is therefore also one of reconciliation and forgiveness. Our penitence, and God s forgiveness, are necessary for recovering wholeness of body, mind and spirit and for healing the broken relationship between ourselves and God, and between one another. Christ has no other hands but yours with which he blesses the world. St Theresa of Avila 12 Prayers after Communion and Blessing We stand Jesus, our wounded healer, by your body, broken on the cross, reveal your wholeness in all for whom we have prayed. Through your broken body, the Church, reveal your wholeness in the world. May we who have been refreshed with the bread of life and the cup of salvation be renewed by your healing Spirit and made ready for the coming of your kingdom. Deacon Hear the words of the Gospel according to Saint Luke Glory to you, O Lord. Deacon Once Jesus was asked when the Kingdom of God was coming. He answered, The kingdom of God does not come by counting down the days on the calendar. Nor when someone says, Look, it s here! or There it is!. The kingdom of heaven is to be found within you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Let us pray: To God our Maker we commend our bodies and our souls. To Christ our Redeemer we commend our brothers and sisters. To the Holy Spirit, our Accompanier we commend our world, in peace. Those who receive the ministry of laying-on-of-hands and anointing will not be visited as a result of this service unless it is specifically requested. 2 15

3 14 THE COMMUNION RITE 10 The Lord's Prayer As our healing Saviour has taught us, we join our prayers with all those who through the ages have sought God s help and salvation as we pray together: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Do not bring us to the time of trial but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. 11 Breaking of the Bread The living bread is broken for the life of the world. Lord, unite us in this sign. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. An invitation to communion is said. Everyone comes to the altar for communion or a blessing.. After communion a period of SILENT prayer is kept by everyone. Before the service begins, the Rector welcomes everyone. We STAND to sing the first HYMN We cannot measure how you heal or answer ev ry suff rer s prayer, yet we believe your grace responds where faith and doubt unite to care. Your hands, though bloodied on the cross, survive to hold and heal and warn, to carry all through death to life and cradle children yet unborn. The pain that will not go away, the guilt that clings from things long past, the fear of what the future holds, are present as if meant to last. But present too is love which tends the hurt we never hoped to find, the private agonies inside, the memories that haunt the mind. So some have come who need your help and some have come to make amends, as hands which shaped and saved the world are present in the touch of friends. Lord, let your Spirit meet us here to mend the body, mind and soul, to disentangle peace from pain and make your broken people whole. 4 The Presiding Priest welcomes everyone and briefly introduces the service Let us pray together Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 The Prayers of Penitence Deacon God the Father forgives us in Christ and heals us by the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore put away all anger and bitterness, all slander and malice and confess our sins to God our redeemer. A moment of silent personal reflection is kept. We have wandered from your paths, O Lord, yet your truth leads us home. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. We have failed to live as your children, yet your love restores us. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. We are disfigured by our sin, yet your power heals us. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Presiding Priest declares the absolution, saying: May the God of all healing and forgiveness draw you to himself, and cleanse you from all your sins that you may behold the glory of his Son, the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. We now obey your Son's command. We recall his blessed passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension; and we look for the coming of his Kingdom. Made one with him, we offer you these gifts and with them ourselves, a single, holy, living sacrifice. Hear us, most merciful Father, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this wine, that, overshadowed by his life-giving power, they may be the Body and Blood of your Son, and we may be kindled with the fire of your love and renewed for the service of your Kingdom. Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ's Body to live and work to your praise and glory; may we grow together in unity and love until at last, in your new creation, we enter into our heritage in the company of the Virgin Mary, the apostles and prophets, and of all our brothers and sisters living and departed. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end. 4 13

5 12 He stands by us and pours out for our healing the oil of consolation and the wine of renewed hope, turning the darkness of our pain into the dawning light of his kingdom. And now we join with St Luke and all the saints and angels for ever praising you and singing: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. +Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We sit or kneel Glory and thanksgiving be to you, most loving Father, for the gift of your Son born in human flesh. He is the Word existing beyond time, both source and final pur pose, bringing to wholeness all that is made. Obedient to your will he died upon the Cross. By your power you raised him from the dead. He broke the bonds of evil and set your people free to be his Body in the world On the night when he was given up to death, knowing that his hour had come, having loved his own, he loved them to the end. At supper with his disciples he took bread and offered you thanks. He broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying: "Take, eat. This is my Body: it is broken for you." After supper, he took the cup, he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying: "Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new covenant; it is poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven. Do this in remembrance of me." 3 The Gloria, Opening Prayer and Readings Rejoicing in the all forgiving power of God s healing love, let us stand and sing to God: This refrain may be used between sections: Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father; we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Glory to God... Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Glory to God... Glory to God... Almighty God, you called Luke, the physician, whose praise is in the gospel, to be an evangelist and physician of the soul: by the grace of the Spirit and through the wholesome medicine of the Gospel, give your Church the same love and power to heal; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. sit for THE LITURGY OF THE WORD At the end of the reading, the reader says: For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God 5

After the sermon, a moment of SILENCE may be kept. 4 Nicene Creed We stand We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father. Through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. I will weep when you are weeping When you laugh I'll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow Till we've seen this journey through. When we sing to God in heaven We shall find such harmony. Born of all we've known together Of Christ's love, and agony. Brother, sister let me serve you Let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I might have the grace To let you be my servant too THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT 8 Table Prayers Father, accept the praise we bring before you this day. Guide us with your love and feed us at your table as you nourish the faith of the Church by the preaching of your apostles. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. 9 The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord is here God s Spirit is with us Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is right to give you thanks in sickness and in health, in suffering and in joy, through Christ our Saviour and Redeemer, who as the Good Samaritan tends the wounds of body and spirit. 6 11

7 This prayer is used at the Laying on of Hands In the name of God and trusting in his might alone, receive Christ s healing touch to make you whole. May Christ bring you wholeness and give you his peace. Answer This prayer is used at the Anointing I anoint you in the name of God who gives you life. Receive Christ s forgiveness, his healing and his love. Answer 7 The Peace We stand God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and as a pledge of what is to come has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Deacon We meet in Christ's name. Let us share his peace. may exchange a sign of Christ s peace As the altar is prepared we sing the offertory HYMN during which the collection is taken. Brother, sister let me serve you Let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I might have the grace To let you be my servant too. We are pilgrims on a journey We are friends along the road We are here to help each other Walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you In the night time of your fear. I will hold my hand out to you Speak the peace you long to hear. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glory fied. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. 5 Intercessions We sit or kneel Encouraged by our fellowship with St Luke and all the saints, let us make our prayers to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. Father, your Son called women and men to leave the past behind them and to follow him as disciples in the way of the cross. Look with mercy upon those whom he calls today, marks with the cross and makes his disciples within the Church. We pray particularly for the recently baptised, and especially for Sam and for Megan. 10 7

8 8 Father, your Son told his disciples not to be afraid and at the first Easter breathed on them his gift of peace. Look with mercy upon the world into which he sent them out, and give it that peace for which it longs. Father, your Son formed around him a company who were no longer servants but friends, and he called those who obeyed him his brother and sister and mother. Look with mercy upon our families and our friends and upon the communities to which we belong. We pray for all churches dedicated to St Luke, and in our own diocese for St Luke s, Downfield and its priest, Lizzie Campbell. Father, you sent your Son that we might have abundant life: make our bodies the temples of your Spirit, comfort the lonely, anxious and depressed, and grant to all who minister to those who are suffering wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience. Where relationships are damaged or broken, bring healing and reconciliation. Father, your Son sent out disciples to preach and heal the sick. Look with mercy on all those who yearn to hear the good news of salvation, and renew among your people the gifts of healing. We ask your healing Spirit to touch the lives of... Father, your Son promised to those who followed him that they would share the banquet of the Kingdom. According to your promise, look with mercy on those who have left this world in Christ s friendship, having passed through death... O Lord our God, accept our prayers and look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. 6 Laying on of Hands and Anointing Come Holy Spirit of God, inspire our hearts to receive your healing love; empower our hands to minister love and wholeness in the name of Jesus; fill our inner silence with hope and expectancy; give us faith in your power to make whole; renew us in body, mind and spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Blessed are you, Sovereign God, gentle and merciful, creator of heaven and earth. Your Word brought light out of darkness, and daily your Spirit renews the face of the earth. Your anointed Son brought healing to the weak and distressed, and sent out the disciples to do the same in his name. By the power of your Spirit may your blessing rest upon all who are anointed with this oil in your name. Blessed be God, our strength and our salvation, now and for ever. 9
