1 OCTOBER 2016 TheFlock THE PRINTED VOICE OF ST. FRANCIS St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church 20 Alta School Rd. Alta, Wyoming stfrancis.episcopalidaho.org All Are Welcome for Worship, Sunday School and Fellowship at 10AM Voice of the Vestry This month has brought in the most beautiful fall colors I can remember with an occasional dusting of snow on the hills for a reminder that we have four seasons in Teton Valley. In our church season we are also offering in the annual stewardship campaign during October and November. In our last vestry meeting we had a presentation from Bev Palm and Jim Rein sharing past year s stewardship drives, as well as our continually evolving assets and abilities to serve others. It gives us great pride to represent the congregation of St. Francis, in serving our neighbors and making a difference in their lives. During the presentation we started a fill in the blank exercise that spontaneously broke into story telling why we came to St. Francis and what we like about our church. We discovered things about each other that were very powerful and engaging. Because everyone can t come to a vestry meeting, we decided to incorporate the story session into the announcement portion of the services for the month of October. We will keep it brief and try to engage the congregation with their stories. I think it will show how diverse we are and all the joyous reasons we worship together. Stewardship is not a popular social attitude, especially when money is tight. Exploring stewardship invades our comfort zone when we are challenged with our day to day expenses but it is in these time we also find the greatest reward in sharing. Know that you are not alone, and as we read last week in Paul's letter to Timothy, in modern times, sums it up, that things haven t changed in the last 2000 years. Buy sharing anything of value we share love and generate gratitude. This pride is the greatest reward for serving our community and making a difference. This month is also our annual October 2nd, blessing of the animals tradition at St. Francis. It is fitting that our church, named after St. Francis of Assisi, would honor and bless all of God s animals and the environment every year. Please bring your pets, livestock or picture of, if it is more fitting so that we can bless their lives. Again this month we will have our Eat and Meet fellowship diner with a potato bar theme. Please invite all your friends, relatives, neighbors and visitors off the street to join us for a free dinner. Our last Eat and Meet was the largest turn out and we hope to build on this momentum. So come and invite everyone you know. Hope to see you there and hope to see you for worship. God s peace, Rod

Debra Adams sfpriest@silverstar.com Senior Warden Rod Gust rodgust@gmail.com Junior Warden Clarke Arick Treasurer Cheryl Reinertsen sfttreasurer@silverstar.com Music Director Gayle Lien rlien@silverstar.com Parish Assistant Hope McKenzie sftetons@silverstar.com Parish Sexton Angie Warner sftstaff@silverstar.com Parish Historian Toni Hill Meeting called to order at 5:30 pm. Monica gave the opening prayer Rod, Clark, Jim, Cheryl, Monica, Sharon and Lisa present Minutes from July - Cheryl pointed out that on page one of the July minutes is a change needed. In the Junior Warden s Report the word girdling should be girdled. Monica made a motion to accept the minutes as changed, Sharon seconded, motion approved. Senior Warden s Report MMR (Mutual Ministry Review) Rod said that we have 2 set s of dates from Canon Lucinda Sept 5-6 and Oct Lisa reported that Deb cannot attend on either of those Tuesdays. Lisa has an into Lucinda to see if other dates are available. Scheduling - Hope will be out of town on 9/12/16. Lisa suggested that Hope send Gayle and the Vestry an when she s going to be out of the office. Eat and Meet approximately 46 people attended, which is our best turnout so far. It was outside and the weather was good. Monica suggested that we consider changing the name, to call out our mission better. Yard sale so far we have netted a little over $ We still have several items that will be posted on the Teton Valley Garage Sales Facebook pages. There were lots of comments about how we always have a great sale. It was suggested that next year we try and schedule it when the 7 th Day Adventists are not using the church, as each summer they have at least one service in another location. Rod thanked all the volunteers for their good work. Sunday Service Volunteers Rod reported that there are people who are not aware that they are scheduled and so either don t show up or show up unprepared. Mostly Greeter/Usher and Refreshments volunteers lately. It was suggested that Hope still send the on Monday and follow up on Wednesday with a call, if she has not had a response. She created a new sign-up sheet which will be announced on Sunday, to try and get more people to sign up to help. Jr Warden s Report Lighting - Clark will ask Carl to attend the next Vestry meeting (if he is in town) and give us a presentation about his ideas for replacing the lighting in the sanctuary. Rod also received a letter from Teton County, WY regarding an architect that is available to advise on restoring historic buildings. Rod will contact the county to see how to move forward. Cheryl mentioned that we should consider the design of the lighting, as well as the function. An ad hoc committee will be formed that will include people who are interested in both aspects of the lighting. Yard Clark commented on how great the yard and flowers look and thanked Rod for his work. Benches Tom Balben has offered to build new benches for the picnic table, using Trex rather than wood. Treasurer s Report Financials - Jim made a motion to accept the July financials, Rod seconded, motion carries. Pastoral Care we discussed the process of pastoral care regarding a recent Request for Assistance, to help with car repairs. The Pastoral Care committee granted the request. Jim Steele gave the Request for Assistance form to Clint Calderwood, owner of the Calderwood house. The house houses adults with developmental disabilities. Due to HIPPA laws, Clint cannot tell us which man needs what services but we will be helping the men with dental care, clothing and other needs. Girl Scout Request For Assistance - Our sponsored Girl Scout Troop provided a detailed breakdown of what funding the troop will need for the coming year. They have 6 mew girls joining this year and the troop is now full. The amount requested is $ Cheryl made a motion to accept the request and grant the Girl Scouts $ from Tin Cup Funds. Jim seconded, motion carries. Monica will continue to be the contact person between the church and troop and will fill out the GS sponsorship form. Stewardship The Finance Committee has not yet met to line out the Stewardship campaign, Lisa will call a meeting soon. Rod will write a stewardship piece for Voice of the Vestry for the September newsletter. Lisa will write a Committee Corner piece describing the Finance Committee for the October newsletter. Eat and Meet income Cheryl reported that the Eat and Meet donations are now being deposited rather that holding them as petty cash. That way we can track our income and expenses for these events. Worship Committee - The committee has set their meeting date as the 2 nd Sunday of each month after church. Leave of Absence - Rod reported that Gayle is planning to be out of town for several months this fall and will ask Ellen, Beverly and Rosemary to sub. Cheryl mentioned that we will have to review Gayle s salary to see if it will cover the $100 per Sunday cost of using subs. Cheryl said that the subs are paid as employees and taxes are taken out of their checks, not as contracted workers. Interfaith Service - The Worship committee is reaching out to other valley churches to start a short interfaith service for the residents at 3 Peaks Assisted Living. Kids in Church - The committee is also working on more ways to include the children in the worship service. Perhaps acolyte training and having the kids in the choir. Solos - Gayle told the committee that anytime anyone wanted to do a solo, vocal or instrumental, she would be happy to work with them. Children s Christian Ed Monica will write a piece for the September newsletter about Children s Christian Ed. She will invite kids back to Sunday School after summer break, although Sunday School has been going all summer. Columbarium Committee no one has yet taken advantage of the paver sale, which reduces the cost of a paver from $350 to $300. The sale will continue through September. Outreach Committee Jim Steele said the Tin Cup Awards Banquet will be held on August 29 th. He thanked all the volunteers who helped with the event, and ask Hope to add a thank you to the bulletin. Monica will post Tin Cup photos on the SFT Facebook page, along with a thank you message. Jim Steele gave the closing prayer.

The Vestry hopes you will enjoy reading about the various committees that support the life and mission of our parish. We particularly hope that you find a role which appeals to you, and that you might like to be a part of. Our next focus is The Children s side of the Christian Education Committee. As families around Teton Valley are settling into another school year, we are once again ramping up to welcome our youngest church members back to Sunday School. I m very proud to report the current parents who support this ministry have once again pledged their time with the children of St. Francis. Thank you from my heart, Jaine and Anna! We are a committee of three, and if you can really call our chats during refreshments a meeting, then we meet often. We recently added the Children s prayer to the beginning of services, and it has been well received by all. This is just one example of how participation in committees has added to our children s experience during services. Please consider giving of your time and/or ideas to this committee. We would love additional Sunday School teachers, even if only for a few Sundays a year. Other ideas might include teaching a song you remember fondly from your days in Sunday School, an art or craft project, or perhaps joining the children in building a Lego creation around a special lesson. We have such vast backgrounds in our congregation; please consider which of your blessings might be a great fit to share with the children. We would love to have you join us.
