F R A N C I S O F T H E T E T O N S E P I S C O P A L C H U R C H Voice of the Vestry It is a great honor to serve St. Francis in my new role as Senior Warden. It is also with gratitude we say good bye to Erica Trembly and Becky Park for serving on the vestry for the last 3 years, and we welcome Jim Steele. Thank you all for your service. We have been discussing ways to expand our congregation in Worship committee as well as the Vestry and encourage your ideas. Know that our first responsibility is to serve you and we will, with God s help. Know that you need not wait until Sunday to share your ideas. St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church 20 Alta School Rd. Alta, Wyoming Phone: sftetons@silverstar.com stfrancis.episcopalidaho.org All Are Welcome for Worship, Sunday School and Fellowship at 10AM This month begins with several feasts as we usher in Lent. On February 2nd, we invite our neighbors to Eat and Meet, an extremely successful outreach program that Becky Park launched last year. Then on February 6th we have our annual fund raiser dinner with an Italian menu, sumptuous deserts and the theme of LOVE. Love is the most important relationship we can have with God as well as our neighbors. We have all pulled together under the direction of Erica in the kitchen and Beverly with the St. Francis singers. This is an event we can all be proud of while enjoying a great dinner and fellowship. Shrove Tuesday is February 9th with the traditional evening pancake dinner. Feasting ends with Ash Wednesday on the 10th and the beginning of Lent. In this week, churches around the world will undergo a transformation of sorts, as the liturgical calendar moves from Epiphany into Lent. Our praise of Alleluia! will give way to Lent s solemn petition, Lord have mercy. The lectionary will lead us down from the mountain where the transfigured Christ is revealed in glory, through the valley of the shadow of death, and ultimately to Jerusalem where the cross and tomb await. Lent weighs heavily on us. It urges us to recall the suffering and death of our Lord. So, in many ways, we transform from Epiphany into Lent with a mix of anticipation and anxiety, a combination of joy and dread. It is no accident, then, that every year we hear again the story of Christ s transfiguration on the mountaintop because, at the heart of this story, we find these all-too-familiar feelings: anticipation diluted by anxiety and joy thinned by dread. It is in Lent that we ceremonially give up something to symbolize and participate in the days leading up to Christ s resurrection. The 40 days of Lent begin on Ash Wednesday and end on Holy Saturday. This marks the 40 days prior to Christ's resurrection, a time when Episcopalians everywhere are called to scrutinize their spiritual lives and do penance by giving up certain things that are part of their everyday lives. The rules for giving things up for Lent are based on scripture and are woven into the readings for worship service. This being said, gives us a great vindication to shed some pounds we acquired during the Christmas holidays. God s peace, Rod Gust

Debra Adams sfpriest@silverstar.com Senior Warden Rod Gust sfseniorwarden@silverstar.com Junior Warden Clarke Arick sfjuniorwarden@silverstar.com Treasurer Cheryl Reinertsen sfttreasurer@silverstar.com Music Director Gayle Lien rlien@silverstar.com Parish Assistant Hope McKenzie sftetons@silverstar.com Parish Sexton Angie Warner sftstaff@silverstar.com Parish Historian Toni Hill Summary Minutes of the Vestry / January, 2016 ***These Minutes are not yet approved. They will be reviewed and approved at the Vestry meeting on February 17.*** Vestry Members Present: Lisa Wagener, Rod Gust, Clarke Arick, Becky Park, Erica Tremblay, Cheryl Reinertsen. Members absent: Monica Hoth, Sharon Froberg, Carol Taylor. Lisa called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm. Rod led the opening prayer. The December minutes were approved without additions/corrections. In her Senior Warden report, Lisa summarized the hiring and interview process which resulted in our hiring of Hope McKenzie to be our new administrative assistant. Jim Rein, Cheryl Reinertsen and Lisa Wagener conducted the interviews and were unanimous in their choice of Hope as the most qualified candidate. She began training with Jaine on December 30 th. Office hours will now be Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-3. Angie Warner will cover the phones on Friday mornings as she conducts her Sexton duties. Hope will check s from home to make sure no important notice are overlooked, and our voic option will include an emergency contact number for anyone who calls. Other items in the Senior Warden report were: A proposal from Jim Rein to consider making donations to the IEF on a regular basis. Discussion was postponed pending Jim s ability to attend a meeting and bring data. A change in the Sunday post-service refreshment plans. Except for one Sunday per month, refreshments will consist of cookies and beverage (coffee, tea, lemonade). Those who have signed up for refreshments will be asked to serve as a host for one Sunday a month when more substantial food will be available. The hosts will also coordinate clean-up. Clarke said he would again coordinate/organize the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. Becky, Lisa and Hope will work together to synch the Outlook and Google calendars. Upcoming outreach and Lent/Easter events were added to the calendars so they are current through March. In his Junior Warden report, Rod stated that he had energized the heat coils on the roof due to snow and ice buildup. He has taken the snow blower out of the furnace room and assessed the condition. He will be taking it to KD Small Engine to have the primer replaced as it has rotted out. Other repairs may/may not be necessary. He checked on the propane status on Christmas Eve and the tank registered 78%. On this day, the day of our meeting, it registered 50%. He wondered whether the heat in the Fellowship Hall which is kept at 60% could be turned down/off. It was noted that because the organ now resides there a constant heat needs to be maintained. Finally, he stated that Jaine and Hope had sent an to the insurance company to have the organ added to our inventory. He also noted that a formal inventory listing with photos had been begun but not completed. Specifically, the chalices and sterling pieces are not on the list. He will contact Mary Lou Oslund for photos and Jim and Ellen Rein for the list and get the process re-started and added to our computerized records. In her Treasurer s report, Cheryl summarized the year-end status of the finances of the parish. She discussed the difficulties of dealing with Amerigas billing process. It appears they have also ignored our cancellation of their service. Rod will follow up. There were no other concerns as the year concluded positively. It was MSC that the financials be approved. The final 2016 budget was presented with all data updated to reflect additional pledges and 2015 actual expenses. The budget was unanimously accepted. A discussion ensued about the plowing and shoveling during the winter months. Rod will talk with Ted Warner who services our parking area about a schedule. As we rent our facility to others, we need to have clear parking and walkways. Clarke also was interested in helping with the servicing. Lisa discussed the plans for the Annual Meeting which will be held Sunday, January 17 th during the service. Several potential new vestry members were suggested with plans to contact them regarding their willingness to serve. A new Senior Warden will be recommended to the Bishop, but not announced until he ratifies our recommendation. Cheryl reviewed the By-Law stipulations regarding the Endowment Committee. Jim Rein and Bev Palm have agreed to serve, and Becky Park volunteered to serve should Jill Gust not wish to continue. We selected recipients for the Sweetheart and St. Francis Awards to be announced at the annual meeting. Cheryl will give clean copies of the 2016 Budget and the 2015 financials to Hope. Lisa will give an agenda to her. We will ask her to prepare a package to be handed out with the bulleting when people arrive for the service. A few Vestry members will summarize some of the significant activities of the parish this year. Erica led a discussion about the Winter Fundraiser. She is confident that pasta can be managed efficiently and that sheet cheesecake can be affordable and convenient as a dessert. Becky suggested that we look into battery-powered mini lights for the tables instead of votive candles. We agreed that given our positive financial condition, this event is more outreach than a fund-raiser. Nevertheless, we do need to cover costs. The following pricing was agreed upon: $20 per person (13 and over) or $35 per couple, $10 for children 6-12 years old, and under 5 free. People bringing significant contributions i.e. more than just butter will not have to buy a ticket. Lisa is arranging youth servers. Ellen Rein has contacted Philbin about designing tickets and posters. Anticipated attendance based on previous years is about 100 persons. Becky reported that Meet and Eat will be soup this time. Posters will go up on the Thursday before the event to give people more warning. The December kids activity was very successful gave them something to do while the adults met. She will see what might be done at the February Meet and Eat. Both Outreach events need post-sunday service organizational meetings. They will coordinate them so they re not in conflict. We tabled the discussion regarding RAD s proposal to become our garbage/recycling hauler until we have a better idea of how it would work. What day will they pick-up specifically is a significant question. How will that work with our needs? Are their recycling bins large enough? Who will be responsible for seeing that the recycling is sorted and placed outside on the days for pick-up? Lisa noted that both Becky and Erica end their terms with this meeting. She thanked them for their service. The next meeting of the Vestry is scheduled for Wednesday, February 17 th at 5:30 pm. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm. Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Reinertsen, Recorder
