1 February 2014 The Printed Voice of St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church To Walk Humbly, Patiently and Kindly Among Our Neighbors The Warden s Welcome Hi, it s me again! Carol asked that I help in her transition as the new Senior Warden, by writing one last Warden s Welcome, as she has hit the ground running to get up to speed on the goings on of the parish. As we look toward 2014, we will have a lot to celebrate in the coming year, not only Deb s ordination but also the 20 th anniversary of being in our church home. We ve had so much to be thankful for over the last 20 years. As a parish, we have grown, matured, and improved and we continue to do so each day. We have a long tradition of serving God through our outreach programs and I d like to reflect on a few. Epiphany St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church 20 Alta School Rd. Alta, Wyoming Phone: sftetons@silverstar.com episcopalidaho.org Please join us for our Worship Service & Sunday school at 10AM Some of you may not know that for 9 years, St. Francis was also the home of the Alta Retreat Center. The Retreat Center brought many folks from around the country (and even other countries) to Alta for 3 to 10 day Retreats. During the retreats, the participants engaged in silence and prayer, as well as teachings based on the work Fr. Thomas Keating. The participants would sleep in the various rooms in the basement of the church and later at the Teton Teepee. Parishioners made the beds; cleaned the church and provided meals and rides to and from the airport, among other duties. Rev. Sandy was a half-time parish Priest and half-time Director of the Retreat Center. Sandy and one part-time staff member; did all the planning and Sandy conducted sessions. If you ve noticed the silences in our service between readings and the sermon, these silences stem from our contemplative background in. The plan was to build a Retreat Center campus behind the church where the Alta Library stands; however, we were not able to obtain the proper zoning from Teton County, Wyoming to build the facility. This outreach helped to support the parish in the early years and our parish may not be here today if it were not for the vision of Bishop Thornton and the wonderful work of our parish members. St. Francis was also called to serve God by partnering with Teton Valley Rotary and helping to organize and house the Teton Valley Food Pantry for 3 years. Each week, Rotary and St. Francis members would haul food up from the basement to the lower sanctuary, distribute food to folks in need, then haul left over food back downstairs again. Parishioners spent time conducting food drives, helping with the ordering, bookkeeping and stocking, as well. This outreach has grown into the self-supporting Teton Valley Food Pantry, run by our own Sharon Froberg. Our Back to School Program started with a few volunteers purchasing supplies for kindergarteners of low income families and has grown in to helping over 100 children each year. We provide them with Back to School vouchers, so kids can go to the local stores to pick out their supplies. This outreach is funded with Tin Cup donations. Our Pastoral Care Committee oversees our Back to Health and Back to Work and Pastoral Care outreach. Back to School and Back to Health are funded mostly with Tin Cup donations and help folks who have medical issues or have been unemployed, allowing them retain dignity by helping them to cover expenses. The Pastoral Care outreach is mostly funded by the generosity of Toni Hill s family to assist people within our parish and the community to help with emergency needs; such has housing, heating bills and among other needs. Requests for assistance for all of these outreach programs come quietly by word of mouth and are vetted by the Pastoral Care Committee. The Tin Cup Challenge has also helped St. Francis sponsor Scouting in Teton Valley. We have helped Boy Scout Troop 153 for many years by providing leadership, funding and boys to the troop. We have also sponsored Girl Scout Troops off and on over the years and many of our girls and young adult women in the parish were once St. Francis Girl Scouts. As a parish we have changed and grown over the years, but one constant is our service to God in our valley. May we continue God s work in our community for many more years to come. Watch for coming news on the celebration of our 20 th Anniversary of our church home! God s Peace, Lisa

3 Page 3 Bishop Brian s Annual Visit & the Annual Meeting St. Francis held our 2014 Annual meeting on January 19th in the presence of Bishop Brian Thom. Above: The St. Francis Choir, led by Gayle Lien, sang an offertory anthem at the service. Left: Bishop Brian delivers a striking sermon while leaving the congregation with thoughts of how they can offer their own gifts to our church. Middle Right: Bishop Brian and Deb Adams. Bishop Brian offered his thoughts on Deb s ordination to the congregation and stated that Deb will lead our Christmas Eve service this year as a Priest. Bottom: Bishop Brian poses with the St. Francis gals, incoming Senior Warden Carol Taylor, Priest in training Deb Adams and Outgoing Senior Warden Lisa Wagener.

4 Bishop Brian Taking a Sabbatical Page 4 Every three years, a priest in the Episcopal diocese may take a three month sabbatical. +Bishop Brian has not taken a sabbatical in the last seven years. He will be taking one from April 9th through June 14th of this year. It will be a chance for his to recharge his batteries, study important issues, research some pressing topics and take in some hiking, painting and qi gong (a form of tai chi) He also plans to use one of his Christmas presents -- golf clubs -- by learning to play golf. The diocesan staff will be hard at work and standing by to help you any way they can. Morning Worship Bob Partridge and Carol Taylor blessed their St. Francis family with a duet that filled our hearts with warmth and love for the rest of the day. A from the Book of Common For a Person in Trouble or Bereavement O merciful Father, who hast taught us in thy holy Word that thou dost not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men: Look with pity upon the sorrows of thy servant for whom our prayers are offered. Remember him, O Lord, in mercy, nourish his soul with patience, comfort him with a sense of thy goodness, lift up thy countenance upon him, and give him peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. At the same service Hannah Hoth and Keaton Chamberlin show the congregation the Sunday School project they made together. Ladies Lunch The Ladies of St. Francis held their first Ladies Lunch for the year. In attendance were Cheryl Reintertsen, Monica Hoth, Connie Steele, Gayle Lien, Patty Sticher, Toni Hill, Deb Rouleau & Nancy Parisee. The next lunch will be held on Wednesday, February 19th at 12:30. The gals decided that for that date we will all bring our family genealogies; if you don t have your family history then bring in a treasured family object, and if you don t have that, then family gossip will work! If you can please bring a lunch dish to share, this could include soup, sandwiches or dessert; if you don t have time then just bring yourself. All ages are welcome

In regards to the minutes from the last vestry meeting, we will change the following paragraph from the 2 recommendations from the Worship committee: 1 st recommendation was to move the pews to a semicircular pattern from Advent thru the Christmas Season 2 nd recommendation was to make a policy regarding pew arrangement for the entire year: Semicircular from Advent thru the Christmas Season and Semicircular for Lent. Regarding the first recommendation, Jim made a motion to approve changing the pews to the semicircular formation from Advent thru the Christmas Season. Sharon seconded it. All in favor, motion carries. Regarding the second recommendation, there was discussion and Toni expressed concern over changing the pews over lent. Toni made a motion to Not move the pews during Lent, Sharon 2 nd the motion, 4 opposed, and motion failed. Jim made a motion to set the policy for the entire year, which would be to move the pews to the semicircular pattern from Advent thru the Christmas Season and also thru Lent and the rest of the year, the pews would face eastward. Lisa 2 nd the motion. 5 in favor, 1, Toni Hill, opposed. Motion passed. Becky made a motion to change the minutes to more accurately reflect the sequence and conversation. Nancy 2 nd it. All in favor. Motion carried. Lisa clarified the meeting time and she wants to inform everyone the changes to the meeting time. For this winter, starting in January, we will meet at church after Sunday. The January meeting will be on the 12 th of January and the annual meeting will be the 19 th. Deb petitioned the vestry for reimbursements for the costs to date on preparing for her ordination. She handed us a sheet that Lisa had prepared. There was a mathematical error on the sheet and after review, the reimbursement was for $ Lisa made the motion to reimburse Deb; with a note how much we appreciate ALL her effort! Sharon 2 nd the motion. All in favor. Motion passed. Lisa recapped Canon Lucinda s visit with us last Sunday. We will be having Parish Ministry talks to discuss the expectations and the roles of the Parish and also Deb. Part of this process is that everyone read the book, Born of Water, Born of Spirit. There will be 3 different discussion groups, the time to be firmed up by the vestry at the next meeting, after a brief survey is conducted. The survey will be to discuss which times will work best for the most people. The possible suggested times are: The Monday night book group Sunday after church one morning during the week 35 books have been ordered, 30 to be paid for by Canon Lucinda and 5 to be paid for by St. Francis. It was noted that all vestry members make a point of participating in these discussions. Lucinda s visits will be once a month starting in February and continuing thru June. Bev, Lisa, Jim Rein, Erica and Jim Schulz have been working on the new Endowment Resolutions. We have drafted 2 new resolutions and clarified a third resolution that has already been established. We will end up with these 3 resolutions: the Columbarium and Memorial Garden Fund, hereafter known as the CGFUND, the Robert H Meier Fund hereafter known as the RHMFUND, and the clarified St. Francis of the Tetons Church Fund, hereafter k now as the SFTCFUND. They have been submitted to the Chancellor for review. We will also be changing the name on our financials to reflect the name change of the SFTC Fund. Junior Warden Reports: The gutter over the Red Door is in and the shim under the comfort pew needs to be fixed. Treasurer Reports: Bev presented the transaction detail by account. Jim made a motion to accept it. Nancy 2 nd it. All in favor. Motion passed. We discussed the Balance Sheet amounts, we have $ in our checking account. We owe $ We have $ in our Designated Funds account. We have received pledges totaling $59, For doing the budget for 2014 we subtract 10% of that and work with the figure of $ We have received 30 pledges for new,9 same, 7 up, 9 down, 9 not repledged. We reviewed the draft budget and will review it again after the end of The final budget will be presented at the January vestry meeting and then again at the annual meeting. All congregants are invited and encouraged to attend the annual meeting. We decided to add a line item in the budget for outside services. The finance committee proposed the following expenditures: We still owe the IED $ from the Columbarium acct which we borrowed to finish the Columbarium. After we find out how much we owe for pavers and installation, we are proposing, if we have the funds, to pay back $ plus interest to the IEF Fund. That will leave us with an outstanding balance of $ The committee proposed the following expenditures: $ in clergy development for Deb s costs and the cost of the ordination. $ youth activity fund $ into designated building repairs and maintenance fund $ into the ERD fund $ for Woontanara Aid (they do not receive any funds from Tin Cup) All present supported the proposal. The exact amounts to be finalized at the January vestry meeting, after 2013 figures are totaled. We discussed the policy of receiving donations from parishioners. We have 4 separate funds where we can put monies. The Operating fund, Designated Funds such as Capital Projects, Endowment funds, and the Columbarium Fund. After discussion of the first draft, we decided to clarify the letter that we will hand out to donors after we have a conversation with Nancy Koonce who is a CPA who works with the Diocese. I will try and get her recomm endation before year end, revised version if necessary and approve it before year end. Worship Committee : No meeting minutes given to us. Christian Education: Darryl Reinke recommended a book for the book group but Becky could not remember the name of it. We asked Becky to come up with a blurb at book club to advertise in the newspapers. There is no Sunday school this month. Ellen and Jenn Chamblin have been working on the Christmas Eve Service and we heartily Thank them for all they are doing. We have new members for the Endowment Committee: Jim Schulz, Jill Gust, and Kathy Runyon have all agreed to be on the committee. Columbarium: no news Outreach-Pastoral Care Jim noted that 48 people came to our Sing A Long and only about 10 were from St. Francis. Our 3 new musicians were: Brent Schindler playing the cello, John Greenwood playing guitar, and not so new, Jim Reinertson on trumpet. We considered changing the name of the event for next year to Sing Along Play Along and also considered an outreach of a monthly Open Mike. Becky wanted to make sure that all the massages that she donated to Pastoral Care are used soon. OLD BUSINESS: Emergency Shelter Status- where are we at with that? New Columbarium Committee Becky brought up fundraisers ideas such as: Welsh cookies, Birthday Calendar, Knives, cleaning wipes, cookbook. End of meeting. Lisa Wagener
