Anyone can adopt an angel by choosing one of the cards from the table in the narthex (or take half of one). Clothing sizes and other info about the child is on the card too. When you bring the wrapped gifts to the church, be sure the child s name and number is on each gift. Putting all the gifts into one large bag is fine (put the name & number on the outside of the bag). Good Samaritan Ministries furnishes the names and will give us more if needed. See the page marked Waiting List if you would like a name and all others have been taken. Our church adopts more angels than any other church for GSM. Many thanks to Jennifer Beck who helped prepare the cards. See Dorothy Rose for questions. Songfest - Family Promise Songfest will be Sunday, November 15th 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Seeger Chapel on the Milligan College campus -- a free bluegrass concert to celebrate and support Family Promise's ministry to homeless families with children. Grateful 12 & More - This group met at the Holiday Inn on Tuesday. There were 20 members in attendance. Thanks to Barbara White and Richard Trent for making those arrangements. As is our custom, the group will sponsor 5 angels from the Angel Tree. Four members agreed to shop for our angels. We also stuffed 40 personal care bags for the Johnson City Downtown Center. These bags included a hat, socks, gloves, washcloth, toothpaste, toothbrush, and a variety of hotel soaps, shampoos, and lotions. These kits are always appreciated by the Center as cold weather approaches. As a note, we would encourage everyone to save spare hotel toiletries and pass them to the Grateful 12 for this project. Our December meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 1. We will share a covered dish meal (meat provided) after which we will wrap our Angel Tree gifts. This event is always great fun, and we look forward to seeing you there.

5 Operation Christmas Child This year, the Munchkins will participate in Operation Christmas Child; the Samaritan s Purse Shoebox project. A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' Name. We would like to invite the entire church to help us with this project. Use an empty cardboard or plastic shoebox (standard size, please) with a lid. You can wrap the box and lid separately, but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. Ask God to use your gifts to show His love to the child who receives your shoebox. Red & green OCC shoeboxes are available while supplies last. Available in the narthex. Gift suggestions for the shoeboxes include (but not limited to): TOYS: start with a central item that a child will cherish; a beautiful doll, a deflated soccer ball with pump, or a stuffed animal. Add quality items such as cars, puzzles, jump ropes, etc. SCHOOL SUPPLIES: pencils, crayons, notebooks, etc. HYGIENE ITEMS: toothbrush, soap, comb, etc. ACCESSORIES: headbands, socks, hats, flip flops, etc. OTHER IDEAS: stickers, picture books, Bible, jewelry, deodorant, bouncy balls, coloring books, etc. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. See bulletin board for a list of suggested items. Please include at least one item a child can immediately embrace such as a stuffed toy, doll, ball, or toy truck. The Children s Fund will pay the $7 shipping cost per box; all you would have to do is fill a box or attend the packing party on Nov. 22 at 6 pm. Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox. Please turn in completed shoeboxes by Nov. 22. You are invited to the Packing Party on 11/22 at 6 pm when they will assemble and pray over the shoeboxes. Ideas for involvement of the church - Church members could buy and donate items for the shoeboxes and/or donate funds for the Munchkins to use to go shopping for shoebox items. All items/funds need to be turned in by Sunday, 11/15. Boxes will be assembled on Sunday, 11/22. Monetary donations may be given to Debbie Johnson or Heather Harwood.

6 A Confession Submitted by Dave McMillin During the 2012 Holston Annual Conference, there was a presentation about the Called to Action program in which the entire UMC had embarked. Videos were shown of a number of Bright Spots throughout the conference. One video was of a feeding program, very much like the Melting Pot, somewhere in the conference, where those who provided the meal also served Holy Communion. The Lord laid it on my heart, then and there, that Marvin s Chapel, too, should be doing that for the Melting Pot. But for nearly three years, I did nothing clearly a continuing sin of omission! (2012, coincidentally, was also the last year that Bishop Swanson presided over Holston Annual Conference and the year in which Sarah Wells, then Director of Good Samaritan Ministries, was given the Denman Pastoral Award for evangelism.) God continued to work on my subconscious, and sometime early this year, I told Rick of my conviction. He was uncritically encouraging. Then, after Melting Pot one day, before this year s Annual Conference, I went in search of Sarah Wells to see if what I believed to be God s plan would be agreeable to Good Samaritan. Sarah was at an off -location meeting, but I spoke to her daughter, who also was encouraging. Then, at Conference, we all learned that Sarah had been appointed to a new church (McCarty). Shortly thereafter, the Press reported that Sarah would be giving up her position at Good Samaritan. Having proceeded that far, I determined to keep going and sin no more. My next move was to talk to Good Samaritan s Melting Pot supervisor, Chauncey Slater. Chauncey told me that no other group was serving noontime Communion at the Melting Pot, reinforcing my belief that I/we had been called to do it. He expressed his opinion that doing so would be a good idea, and agreed to seek approval from Good Samaritan s new management. Touching base with Rick again, he said that he would be glad to officiate, if I would provide the elements (the bread and juice). I agreed. For several weeks we heard nothing from Good Samaritan, then on the Friday before our September service date Chauncey called to tell me that we could go ahead the following Tuesday. My heart jumped in my chest, feeling that God truly was involved, and that we were doing His will, but having some doubt that we could pull everything together on time. For the first time on Tuesday, October 20, we served Holy Communion to approximately 50 folks at the Melting Pot who accepted our invitation to participate -- using a communion set borrowed from Munsey (Patty Muse). Rick and I plan to continue serving Communion, monthly, as long as there are folks there who wish to take it, and I hope that there will be many from Marvin s Chapel among that number, demonstrating that we Christians truly are all one body. God has blessed our congregation in so many ways. We want to share our blessings with others in our community in the form of a special weekly food collection for Good Samaritan Ministries. In November, we will be collecting a specific item for the food pantry at Good Samaritan. They have an urgent need for certain pantry staples. We will deliver our food collection to GSM during the first week in December. We are asking each family to bring at least one item each Sunday in November to help feed the hungry in our area. A special box will be supplied. ~ Thanks from the Missions Committee ~ Weekly Food Collection for Good Samaritan Sunday, Nov. 8 - Jars of Peanut Butter Sunday, Nov Boxes of Instant Potatoes & Boxes of Macaroni & Cheese Sunday, Nov Cans of Tuna Sunday, Nov Boxes of Oatmeal or Cereal
