3 Minute for Mission Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. Luke 4:17a 19 The Rev. Jimmie R. Hawkins; Director, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Public Witness, Compassion, Peace & Justice Ministry; Presbyterian Mission Agency The Bible makes mention of the fact that we carry dual citizenship as citizens of the kingdom and citizens of the world. But these identities are not equal. If there is ever a conflict, the values of the kingdom must come first. There is a level of confusion in the minds of many Christians equating being a Christians with being patriotic, but they are not the same. Jesus said that anyone who loves mother or father, brother or sister, is not worthy of me. We are a God-first people who put the cares of God before all others. Therefore, we are made better citizens of the state because we are concerned about those who are not deemed worthy of attention. We stand with those the state will not defend or support. We speak truth to those in political power that the real authority belongs to a God who calls us to feed the hungry, welcome the immigrant, care for the sick and rehabilitate the prisoner. Out of our faith commitment to the Kingdom of God, we transform the kingdoms of this world into the Beloved Community. The Rev. Jimmie R. Hawkins; Director, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Public Witness, Compassion, Peace & Justice Ministry; Presbyterian Mission Agency loved our neighbors as ourselves. You have called to us in the need of our sisters and brothers, and we have passed unheeding on our way. In the pride of our hearts, and our unwillingness to repent, we have turned away from the cross of Christ. Forgive us, O Lord. Fill our hearts with your love; our ears with the cries of a needy world; our minds with thoughts of only you and your service; our hands with deeds of love and kindness. SILENT PRAYER OF PERSONAL CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON RESPONSE 697 (v. 1) Proclaiming the Word Take My Life PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Awesome God, you are the peace of those who trust you and the happiness of those who love you. Please increase our faith and love. With a single-minded passion, may we glorify you by the way we respect and cherish and love one another. In the name of Christ Jesus, who with you in unity with the Holy Spirit, are One God to be worshipped and enjoyed forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Ruth 1:1-18 (O.T. pg. 238) GOSPEL LESSON Mark 12:28-34 (N.T. pg.48) NOT FOR CHILDREN ONLY HYMN 828 More Love to Thee, O Christ

4 SERMON Responding to the Word SHARING OF JOYS AND CONCERNS OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS RESPONSE 693 (v. 2) A Commandment to Love By Though I May Speak PRAYER OF DEDICATION What do we have to offer, Lord, which you do not already possess in endless measure? Only our free gift of our love and devotion, which you will not coerce but lovingly accept. May our gifts today be more than a symbol of what we intend to do, but a sign that our whole lives, our energy, our substance, our will are yours, from this moment forward. Amen. HYMN 525 Sacrament of Holy Communion Let Us Break Bread Together INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts, people of God. We lift them to our Lord so they might be filled with a new spirit. Let us give thanks to God who loves us. May our willing spirits offer praises to the One who feeds us. The Congregation and Community Committee has heard of the need at the high school for items for Ichabod s Closet, a program that helps needy students with some basic essentials so that they may feel prepared to come to school. These items include: shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste (but not toothbrushes), and body soap either liquid or bar, all needed for both male and female students. Also needed as the weather gets colder are: hats, gloves, pull over hooded sweatshirts and girl s/women s leggings. All items may be left in the box marked Ichabod Crane in the hallway by the office entry door. We will be collecting items throughout the cold weather season. Our Annual Turkey Dinner is this Saturday, November 10! We will be setting up and preparing the meal starting at 9:00am. The dinner begins at 4:00 for take out and 4:30 for dine in. Tickets are $14.00 for adults and $7.00 for children ages For more information call A meeting of the Congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Valatie, NY, is called for Sunday November 11, 2018 immediately following worship for the purpose of electing 2 elders to the Class of 2022 and one deacon to the Class of 2021 and 2 deacons to the Class of By Order of the Session Nancy Pienta, Clerk

5 ANNOUNCEMENTS NURSERY CARE DURING WORSHIP is provided for infants and children through the second grade. Parents are asked to take their child (ren) to the nursery during the hymn just before the sermon. The nursery is found through the door to the left of the pulpit, down the hall on the left. Children who are in the third grade and older should remain with their families during the worship service. THE ECUMENICAL FOOD PANTRY continues to meet a growing need in the Ichabod Crane School district. They are grateful for all donations of non-perishable foods (that have a future expiration date) and are asking particularly at this time for cold cereals for children and adults, tuna, individual fruit cups, protein bars, canned fruit and vegetables. If you have any questions about the Food Pantry or how you might get involved, speak with Dorothy Johnson or Carol Matthews, our representatives on the Food Pantry Committee. We continue to collect clothes for the Rescue Mission in Albany. Gently used clothing, bedding, and shoes are always welcome. A box for your donations is located next to the Pastor s Study. Do you have a few hours to volunteer? Check out the Job Jar on the table at the back of the sanctuary and find a task you can do around the building. Finish it during the week and put the completed job in the other jar. We all will thank you. TODAY following worship there is a Pot Luck Lunch for everyone! Please join us in the Fellowship Hall for fellowship and food....therefore, we praise you, joining our voices, here and now, with the faithful of every time and place, singing to the glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy are you, God of every mercy. All creation praises one God and Father, one Lord, one Spirit. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who gifts all of God s people! Hosanna in the highest!...recalling your steadfast love in Christ, and knowing we cannot understand your grace until that eternal day when we can know your heart, we take this bread and this cup, praising and blessing you for these gifts of hope and joy. Great is the mystery of faith. Christ died, a seeming prisoner of death. Christ was raised, so all might be freed in resurrection love. Christ will return, finishing the work of God. THE LORD S PRAYER BREAKING OF THE BREAD POURING OF THE CUP COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE (sins, sin) PRAYER We thank you, O God, that through Word and Sacrament you have given us your Son who is the true vine and fed us the food of eternal life. So strengthen us in your service that our daily living may show our thanks, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *HYMN 300 They ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love
