Please consider making a monetary donation to help buy supplies or volunteer to make a dessert or be a server. Update on Ushers for Looking for two volunteers for one spot in October and for one spot in November. Please call the church office if you would like to fill one of these spots or would be willing to volunteer for a second month in A final schedule will be sent out soon. Food Collection for December - Donated food in December will be delivered to the Community Help Center. Food items can be left in the narthex. As of November, we have donated 1,903 food items to GSM and CHC. Next Week s Preschool Volunteer - December 20 - Scott Cradic Infant Nursery & Preschool Program Our infant nursery is for children ages birth through 2 years. Our Preschool Program is for children ages 3-5 years. Once children turn 5 years old, they should begin sitting with their parents during the worship service. 5 Chrismons Have you ever looked at the ornaments that decorate the Christmas tree at Marvin s Chapel? I have certainly appreciated the Christmas tree from my pew, but I have never looked at the tree up close until this past Sunday. Janet Gray was teaching the Youth Sunday School Class and was leading them on a field trip around the sanctuary; pointing out the various Christian symbols on display. Chrismons are Christmas decorations with Christian symbols on them, and they help Christians to remember that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus's birth. They were first made by Frances Kipps Spencer in Danville, VA. She also thought of the word, Chrismon, which is a combination of Christ and monogram (meaning symbol). Janet told me that when she was a young mother, she and other ladies that attended Marvin s Chapel got together during the day to make the ornaments. I always thought that the ornaments were cross stitched, which they are, but each symbol is also designed with small beads. They are really pretty! I encourage you to look at them closely one day. Here is a list of a few that are on the tree and what the symbol means: Alpha and Omega are the first and the last letters of the Greek alphabet. Used together, they symbolize that Christians believe Jesus is the beginning and end of all things. The Candle represents that Christians believe Jesus is the Light of the World. The Crown is the symbol that Jesus in King. It shows that Christians believe Jesus is ruler over heaven and the earth. The Dove is the symbol of peace and the Holy Spirit. It is shown pointing down to represent the Holy Spirit that appeared as a Dove when Jesus was baptized. The Trefoil represent the Christian 'Trinity' of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This design is three equal circles intertwined to form a whole. ~Continued on back~ The Shell is a symbol for baptism. It is also a sign of Pilgrimage, as Pilgrims to the Holy Land (Israel) would use a shell as a drinking vessel. The Irish or Celtic Cross is a normal cross with a circle in the middle to symbolize eternity. Significance of Frankincense and Myrrh Frankincense and myrrh were the treasures given to Jesus at his birth. Why were they considered treasure? Frankincense and myrrh are the resin found inside a special family of trees that grow almost exclusively in the Arabian Peninsula. Gathering the resin is a time consuming process: the trees are cut with knives, and the sap oozes out over a 2-3 month period and is allowed to harden. These resins were a regular item traded along the Incense Road and have been shown to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. When Jesus was born, it is said that these substances were worth more than gold. Harvested frankincense and myrrh are burned as incense, but historically, they have a number of other uses as well: Greeks, Roman, Egyptians, and Israelites used these resins as part of religious ceremonies and for funerals. "Frankincense has traditionally been used as a remedy for a wide variety of afflictions, including ulcers, hypertension, nausea, fever, indigestion, chest coughs and post-childbirth recovery. Myrrh is also used medicinally to treat sore throats, cramps, inflammation, colic and digestive problems." In recent laboratory studies, frankincense and myrrh have shown promise in addressing several disorders. Frankincense is being studied as a treatment for cancer.
