We have been grudging in our giving, gripping reality so tightly that we cannot loosen up to receive with open hearts and hands your glorious surprises and possibilities. 3 RESPONDING TO GOD S WORD AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Heidelberg Catechism I am called Christian because by faith I am a member of Christ and so I share in his anointing. I am anointed to confess his name, to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks, to strive with a good conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and afterward to reign with Christ over all creation for all eternity. We call him our Lord because not with gold or silver, but with his precious blood he has set us free from sin and from the tyranny of the devil, and has bought us, body and soul, to be his very own. Help us, O God, more and more to become giving people, reaching out to those who lack, touching the lonely ones, caring for those who are troubled, living with all in joy and hope and peace, giving gifts of time and self and wealth. One: In our giving we grow in God s image. For God is a giver. We become more like the people God made us to be. For God created us for good. All: In our giving, we become caring stewards for God. 5 NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER DEADLINE: OCTOBER 23 The November Newsletter submission deadline is Monday, October 23 rd. Please have all articles turned in to Beth by noon that day. The News will mail on October 30 th. B90 PARTICIPANTS UPDATE Participants in the Bible in 90 Days program this week (Week Ten) will finally reach the New Testament, beginning reading Matthew after a sprint through the 12 Minor Prophets that end the Old Testament. Pray for, and offer encouragement to, the over 80 people taking part in this audacious challenge. And ask them about their experiences, and how their reading has changed them. CHILDREN'S SABBATH RESCHEDULED Due to scheduling conflicts and scheduling changes among families, we have decided to cancel the Children's Sabbath that was to be on Oct. 22. We will RESCHEDULE for the spring semester. We hope that you'll look forward to the Children's Bake & Craft Sale on November 19 th and the Christmas Program on December 10 th. The new Children's Sabbath date will be announced soon! Thank you for understanding! WALK TO BETHLEHEM BEGINS OCTOBER 28 Let the journey begin. again. Diana Smith and Brigid Hall are back to coordinate our 2017 Walk to Bethlehem (W2B). We will begin on Saturday, October 28 th. We will end nine weeks later on Friday, December 22 nd. That gives us NINE weeks to get there. We think everyone can find a way to participate AND we will need every mile we can get to cover the thousands of land and sea miles we have in front of us. STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN 2018 PLEDGE CARD RETURN OCTOBER 23 Route boxes and mailed pledge cards have been distributed. Please prayerfully consider your pledge for 2018, and if possible, consider a 5%, 10%, or 15% increase, to help us reach our goal of $525,000 to fulfill our budget needs for There are many options in paying your pledge: You may pre-pay your 2018 pledge in 2017! We must receive your prepaid pledge on or before Dec. 31, 2017, to receive tax credit for You may pay your 2018 pledge online at FPC can automatically withdrawal your pledge from your bank account. Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service. FPC would like to compile a list of veterans in our midst, and to honor them on November 5 th. If you are a veteran, or have any family members who have served in the armed forces, please provide the information to Beth in the church office (beth@fpcsalina.org) by Wednesday, November 1, so that we can compile a special commemorative tribute. FELLOW MAN INTERNATIONAL: NOVEMBER 12 Lisa Armstrong will bring an update on the ongoing service of the Fellow Man International Mission of Honduras on November 12 at First United Methodist Church at 4:00 pm. Dr. Samira Villela, the young doctor for whom FMI provided educational funds, will also make a presentation. The event is free; however, get a ticket from the church office so the planning committee will know how to prepare. A light dessert will be provided. SUNRISE COAT CLOSET: OCTOBER 21 Sunrise Presbyterian Church is once again hosting a Coat Closet. Please donate new or gently used child/youth/teen-sized coats to the drive which occurs on Saturday, October 21 st, from 9 am to 2 pm at 825 E. Beloit, Salina. Donations will be accepted from now until October 17 th and can be taken to the Pit Stop, 674 W. Cloud or 1805 S 9 th or to Sunrise Church. During the collection period, donators can take a snap (with Snapchat app) of themselves donating at one of the drop locations with the hashtag #coatcloset and use the snap to redeem 50% off their meal at Gourmet to Go/Loft Catering located at 1402 E. Iron Ave.

7 Wandering tribes. The image first struck me as I began reading the Old Testament as part of The Bible in 90 Days challenge. The Israelite tribes, led by God, wandering in the wilderness of life. The truth is that we are all part of tribes that have wandered at one time or another. None of us just suddenly arrived one day in Salina. We've all come from someplace else. As part of our Kirkin' of the Tartan celebration on Reformation Sunday, October 29th, I want to focus on our tribal roots, or from where each of us has come to get here. Let's guide our thinking for this Family Heritage Service with this idea: Everybody has a story. Yes, Reformation Sunday and the Kirkin' highlights the roots of the Presbyterian Church and some of our families. Not all of us, though, are Scots. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, we should remember that our religious heritage comes from many countries that staked new theological claims. To honor your individual roots, you are invited to tell your own family story. Write a paragraph outlining your history, telling what country your forebears came from to America, when they arrived, and what path they took to get to Kansas. Then, send the information to the church office (beth@fpcsalina.org) by Tuesday, October 24th. We'll compile an FPC family history booklet, and distribute it on Sunday, October 29th. At that service, in addition to the Scottish theme (including a bagpiper ) we'll reflect with thanksgiving on our own family and ethnic heritage, and celebrate God's grace poured out for all generations. On the following Sunday, November 5th, we'll celebrate All Saints Day and Veterans Day with a second Throwback Sunday. We've found in our archives a bulletin from November 1, years ago - that paid special tribute to the armed forces then fighting in World War II. We'd also like to honor service members past and present. In addition to compiling names of veterans for a bulletin insert, you are encouraged to dig up family photos of family members (including some current members) who have worn a uniform - with a particular emphasis on those who might have been serving in We'll assemble the pictures of service members that you submit to the church office (beth@fpcsalina.org) by Wednesday, November 1, into a slideshow that will be presented in Blair Hall immediately following the service. And, in tribute to the meal and services provided by FPC to soldiers 75 years ago, we'll gather for a soup luncheon. For the Throwback Sunday service on November 5th, too, start scouring your closets and attics for costumes and clothing from the 1940s, whether military-related or not, and wear it to the November 5th service. Last year, we had such fun dressing up in 1920s garb. Let's move our thinking forward by two decades and do it again!

8 MIDWEEK MANNA A contemporary service with weekly Dinner, Communion & Praise Band (free-will offering) Join us Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. This week s caterer is Cozy Inn! FOR YOUR INFORMATION: FPC s Nursery, located on the second floor, is available for infants and children ages 5 and younger. FPC encourages children ages 6 and older to remain in worship. Worship bags for children of all ages are located in the lobby. When you are finished with the bag, please put it in the basket so that it can be replenished and straightened. Pew Art cards are also available in the pew racks. FBI (Faithful Bible Investigators) is our Christian Education program for children in grades K-5. FBI-In-Training is our Christian Education program for children age 2 through Pre-K. HeBrews is our 9 th -12 th grade Youth Bible Study that meets every Thursday during the school year at 6:45 am at Mokas on Crawford. The name is derived from Hebrews 10:25. God Squad is our 6 th -8 th grade Youth Bible Study that meets every Tuesday during the school year from 6-7 pm at different Salina dining locations. Adult Education Class meets every Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Hope Room. Extra hymnals, including large print, and Bibles are available in the back of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is equipped with a Hearing Loop. Please switch your hearing aid to t-coil to use. Please see your audiologist to activate your t-coil if you haven t done so yet. Headsets are also available. An usher will be happy to help if you need assistance. CONGREGATIONAL CARE: Tan Prayer Request Cards are for prayer requests or concerns. These go to the Board of Deacons. Blue We Care Cards are for messages of care to persons of the congregation; these cards are mailed the next week. Cards are available in the back of the room. Please place the cards in the offering plate. Your Prayer Concerns can now be submitted online. Please visit and they will be forwarded to a pastor.
