1 GEne FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER March 4, 2018 *for those who wish to stand Bold print indicates congregational participation GATHERING AROUND GOD S WORD PRELUDE WELCOME Rev. Dr. Charlie Smith *OPENING HYMN When Morning Gilds the Skies #667 LITANY FOR LENT One: O Christ, out of your fullness we have all received grace upon grace. You are our eternal hope; you are patient and full of mercy; you are generous to all who call upon you. All: Save us, Lord. One: O Christ, fountain of life and holiness, you have taken away our sins. On the cross you were wounded for our transgressions and were bruised for our iniquities. All: Save us, Lord. One: O Christ, obedient unto death, source of all comfort, our life and our resurrection, our peace and reconciliation: All: Save us, Lord. One: O Christ, Savior of all who trust you, hope of all who die for you, and joy of all the saints: All: Save us, Lord. One: Jesus, Lamb of God, All: Have mercy on us. One: Jesus, bearer of our sins, All: Have mercy on us. One: Jesus, redeemer of the world, All: Grant us peace.

2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We are misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained and great when we are small. We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored your truth. Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin. Return us to paths of righteousness through Jesus Christ, our Savior. TAKING OUR SINS TO THE CROSS DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS RESPONSE TO PARDON What Wondrous Love Is This (#215, v.3) To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing To God and to the Lamb, I will sing To God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing While millions join the theme, I will sing! 3 RESPONDING TO GOD S WORD *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN. HYMN OF AFFIRMATION When Peace Like a River #840 INTERCESSIONS FOR LENT One: Jesus, remember us when you come into your kingdom. Hear our intercessions. For your church around the world, All: We ask new life. One: For all who carry out ministries in your church, All: We ask grace and wisdom. One: For people who have accepted spiritual disciplines, All: We ask inspired discipleship. One: For Christians of every land, All: We ask new unity in your name. One: For Jews and Muslims and people of other faiths, All: We ask your divine blessing. One: For those who cannot believe, All: We ask your faithful love. One: For governors and rulers in every land, All: We ask your guidance. One: For people who suffer and sorrow, All: We ask your healing peace.

4 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. It is usually placed as close as possible to International Women s Day. What this Sunday creates is an opportunity for congregations throughout our denomination to mark and celebrate the participation and contributions of women in the life of their churches, communities and beyond. This is a newer tradition for FPC Salina. When you come to church on March 11, you will see women in service in the entirety of our service, including Diana Smith delivering the message from the pulpit. Please mark the date and come worship in celebration of the women of our congregation. GET READY! VERSE-ATILITY BEGINS MARCH 11! The past two Lenten seasons, we ve had fun determining favorite hymns and scripture verses using a bracket modeled after the NCAA basketball tournament. This year, you ll be asked to take part in determining a favorite woman of the Bible. Who might you pick? The 32-name bracket will be unveiled on Selection Sunday, March 11th. Watch for it and join in the fun! SPEND TIME AT OUR LENTEN PRAYER STATIONS Our Lenten Prayer Stations, Tables with Jesus, are available now through Easter! These tables feature ways to explore the different tables Jesus sat at with different people during his ministry. You will be able to take your place at these tables and interact with them. You will also see how God is speaking to you through them as you enter into a time of prayer. The stations are located in Blair Hall, the chapel, and in the library, and are available whenever the church is open. Special thanks to our table adopters who have set up the tables and will maintain them throughout Lent.

7 WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY The next Women s Bible Study meeting will be held this Monday, March 5 th, at 5:30 p.m. in the Hope Room. Cloud of Witnesses, the Community of Christ in Hebrews by Melissa Bane Sevier, invites us to explore major themes found in Hebrews, relate these themes to other parts of our faith tradition, and tie them together with the overarching motif of community. Books are available in the church office during regular office hours. The cost is $10. WIRED WORD MOVES TO MONDAY MORNINGS BEGINNING MARCH 5! Pastor Charlie and others are leading the Wired Word Adult Bible Study Class now on Mondays at 9 am in the Hope Room. The Wired Word curriculum focuses on a recent news item and applies a biblical perspective to it. Topics are always challenging and certain to spur lively conversation. If you would like the curriculum ed to you ahead of time each Thursday, please contact the church office. Otherwise, just show up when you are able! FPC ONLINE DIRECTORY SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 15 Thanks to those FPC Salina members who have submitted photos for the new online directory. If you d still like to show off your pearly whites, we d like to wrap up our efforts by Thursday, March 15th. It s really very simple! Send your photo to Beth via at beth@fpcsalina.org. She will do the rest! We hope you have downloaded the app on your phone and find it helpful! YOUR FISH BANKS ARE HUNGRY! It s that time of year again! The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) s One Great Hour of Sharing is underway, and our children (and any child-at-heart who is interested!) will be collecting money during Lent. A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. So take a look around your car s center console, on your dresser, between the couch cushions, and anywhere else change might be hiding and share it with our kids collecting money for OGHoS! TELL US YOUR MIDWEEK MANNA EXPERIENCES! The end of the school year will be upon us before we know it! That will also wrap up the second year of our popular MidWeek Manna meal and worship service on Wednesday nights. We d like to hear from you about the MidWeek Manna experience as we envision what it will look like when it begins again in the fall. On Wednesday, March 7 th, the Worship Committee will meet at its regular time, 4:30 p.m., to discuss MidWeek Manna. Then, after the service and meal that same night, around 6:30 p.m., we ll remain in Blair Hall to gather feedback. We hope that you ll join us that night to take part in this important discussion. FPC YOUTH HEADED ON TWO SUMMER TRIPS! This summer, FPC Salina is excited to offer two youth summer trip options! From June 10-15, we will be going to the Heartland Youth Encounter. From July 8-13, we will be going on a mission trip in Kansas City. Youth are invited to attend one or both of the trips. More information on registration and payment options is forthcoming. 9 It s something nobody likes to think about: A mass shooting. The danger, though probably remote, does exist. In Sutherland Springs, Texas, last November a gunman killed 25 people during a worship service. In an effort to be prepared, First Presbyterian Church of Salina has scheduled an active-shooter training session by the Kansas Highway Patrol on Tuesday, March 20 th at noon. The Kansas Active Shooter Mitigation course, to be held in Blair Hall, lasts about an hour and a half. It teaches active-shooter awareness and training, providing critical information in a timely manner on what to expect in the event of an active shooter, as well as potential options and considerations to mitigate the threat. Churches that have held similar programs have cited a need for ways to better secure the congregation, develop emergency and security plans, build relationships with local lawenforcement agencies, and to foster a culture of readiness and awareness. FPC Salina members are encouraged to attend this program. Also invited are members of Northern Kansas Presbytery, other Salina area churches and the general public.
