KIRKIN O THE TARTANS SERVICE: OCTOBER 30 They re called earworms, songs usually bad that you know but can t name that stay stuck in your mind, playing over and over and over. Sometimes, though, earworms can be good. That s what happens with music played by bagpipers. Everybody knows Amazing Grace, of course. But those other songs? By the time the first chords are played, you feel as if you know and recognize them, too, right? Two of the most familiar are Highland Cathedral and Scotland the Brave, which is considered an unofficial national anthem of Scotland. You ll hear these and other tunes, played by a live bagpiper, on Sunday, October 30 th as FPC Salina celebrates Kirkin o the Tartans and Reformation Sunday. You won t want to miss this treat!
6 ALL SAINTS DAY & THROWBACK SUNDAY: NOVEMBER 6 First Presbyterian Church of Salina has so much to celebrate! One of the hallmarks of this body of Christ is the longevity of its members. On All Saints Sunday, November 6 th, join us as we celebrate, in the usual way, 50-year FPC members, but also those who first joined our rolls as many as 83 years ago! We ll also remember those who have joined the saints triumphant. The service will be crafted after a 1927 bulletin found in our archives, and everyone is encouraged to dress in Roaring Twenties clothes! (Let s dub it Bonnets and Bow Ties. ) What might that attire look like? We ll provide some tips and clues leading up to the date, though some of you might fit the bill already with suits, dresses and hats already in your closets. VETERAN S DAY TRIBUTE: NOVEMBER 13 Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served in the military -- in wartime or peacetime. Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service. FPC would like to compile a list of veterans in our midst, and to honor them on Sunday, November 13 th. If you are a veteran, or have any family members who have served in the armed forces, please provide the information to the church office by November 4 th so that we can compile a special commemorative tribute. LET THE BELLS RING! If you are interested in being part of a bell choir at FPC, we want to know! Playing bells is fun, does not require any in-depth musical training, and is a great way to enjoy fellowship with church members and contribute to worship. At this point, we are trying to determine whether we start an Adult Bell Choir AND a Youth Bell Choir or perhaps we have a multigenerational group. SO...if you or your son/daughter is interested in RINGING, please get in touch with Richard Koshgarian, Choir Director, at richardk4@cox.net. FELLOW MAN INTERNATIONAL MISSION OF HONDURAS The fundraiser for Fellowship Man International Mission of Honduras combines the delight of a massed choir and the charm of both a live and silent auction, starting at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church on November 6 th. The adult choirs from First Presbyterian, First United Methodist and Sunrise Presbyterian will sing and Lisa Armstrong will bring an update by word and projected pictures. A dessert fellowship, silent and live auction will follow. Use of a Colorado condo at Breckenridge, a Colorado house near Estes, a hunting lodge get-away and arts and crafts items will be featured for the auctions. Many other items will be auctioned. SAVE THE DATE! PARENT & YOUTH SOCIAL MEDIA CLASS: OCTOBER 30 On October 30 th, in lieu of Youth Group at 11:15 a.m., we will have the first, of 3, Parent and Youth Special Topic Gathering. Our first topic is Social Media. We will have 2 guest speakers, Shiela Beeson and Courtney Train. Social Media is such a strong force in our lives that it is important for ourselves and our youth to know the positives and negatives and be able to talk about them! This will be a fun, interactive, informative hour and a half! Lunch will be served. Come enjoy some time and learning with your youth! Any questions, please call Tricia.
7 STEWARDSHIP CELEBRATION AND MITTEN DRIVE OCTOBER 23 By now, you should be familiar with the logo for this year s FPC Abundant Joy, Overflowing Generosity Stewardship campaign: Eight hands in a circle, representing the giving to God of our day, worship, spiritual gifts and money. It s a powerful symbol, for it reminds us that we are the hands of Jesus Christ to the world. As part of our celebration wrapping up the Stewardship campaign on Sunday, October 23 rd, we ll demonstrate the handing over of our time, talent and treasure to God with an actual gift. On that Sunday, please bring a pair of gloves or mittens that you have purchased and that will be brought forward during the service and placed into a basket on the Lord s Table. The donated mittens will be collected for the Communities in Schools project at Lakewood School.
8 ONLINE GIVING IS COMING! Are you in interested in paying your pledge or contributing online? If so, we have some GREAT news! We are moving forward with online giving in the next few weeks. Once launched, there are many different ways you may choose to contribute. Stay tuned for more details!! THE WALK TO BETHLEHEM (W2B) HAS BEGUN! Fired up? Ready to go? Sign-up at the W2B display at the church it s never too late! You can report your mileage at the church display each Sunday or Brigid Hall at bdhall@swbell.net.
