2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ Happy Mother s Day to all of our mothers! A mother s love cannot be underestimated. The Scriptures compare God s love to that of a mother. We refer to the Church as our mother because she gives us life (in Baptism) and nourishes us (in the Eucharist and the other sacraments). And, of course, the most revered human being in our Church is our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. The love of a mother re lects the love of God, so on this day we thank God for our mothers, living and deceased, for the ways that they communicated God s love to us. On this weekend I d also like to offer some overdue thanks to our Religious Ed. catechists and aides. The R.E. year has now concluded, and we had beautiful celebrations of the sacraments (First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Con irmation) with the students. I would like to thank each of the R.E. catechists and aides who gave so much of themselves to volunteer their time and talent to pass on the Catholic faith to our young people. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to: catechists Dorothy Brown, Fran Cipriano, Charlene Cruz, Maria Kerr, Bernice Kirchen, Rose Kraft, Michelle Morgan, and Janet Zito; catechist aides Sandra Cervantes, Renee Denk, Nina Figueroa, Ron Kraft, Adam Lecas, and Claudia Sosa; and our R.E. Coordinator Zerlina Kirchen. As we continue honoring our Blessed Mother in this month of May, our St. Beatrice concert series also continues this month with a concert by violinist Anthony Kawalkowski. He will present a violin concert entitled, Music from the Heart on Wednesday, May 24 th at 7:00pm here in church. Mr. Kawalkowski has played in front of Cardinal Bernardin, Cardinal George, and Pope John Paul II. He also plays at our Christmas and Easter Masses here at St. Beatrice, and on other special occasions. I know he will offer us a wonderful concert, so I hope you can join us on May 24 th. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the organ after Sunday Masses, at the rectory, or at the door on the night of the concert. And thank you to our Music Director Richard Gersten for organizing this! Don t forget that tickets for the 200 Club Dinner & Raf le are also still on sale. The dinner and raf le drawing will take place on Saturday, June 3 rd in our former school building, with the doors opening at 6:00pm. Each $100 ticket enters you in the raf le with a $5,000 cash prize, and four other cash prizes. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Each ticket also entitles you and one guest to the June 3 rd dinner, which is an all-you-can-eat buffet and open bar (again, two people can come for every one ticket). Plus, you do not need to be present on June 3 rd in order to win. You can buy tickets at the back of church today after Mass, or during the week the rectory. Finally, some people have asked if there are any updates with the Renew My Church (RMC) process. I can tell you that there is nothing to report right now. There are over 90 groupings of parishes around the Archdiocese (remember, we have ive parishes in our group). A pilot wave of groups were activated (i.e., they formally began the process) in January. Another wave of 6-10 groups will be activated this July. From then on, around 6-10 groups will be activated every January and July, until all the groups have entered in the process (so, it will take a few years to get everyone started). I do know that we will not be in the next wave this coming July, so right now there is nothing to report. I can say that our ive parishes have informally started to talk about ways that we can share our resources. For example, we are discussing the possibility of doing a joint parish Lenten mission for So, as always, whenever I receive any updates I will let you know. St. Beatrice, pray for us and for all mothers on this Mother s Day! May God bless you. Fr. Rob
3 Beatitudes for Mothers Blessed are mothers who did without, just for us They shall be richly blessed. Blessed are mothers who lost sleep when we were sick They will find rest. Blessed are mothers who taught us how to pray They will share God s Kingdom. Blessed are mothers who comforted us They will be comforted. Blessed are mothers who taught us right from wrong They will know justice. Blessed are mothers who showed us the Christian life by example They will live forever. Blessed are mothers who shared with us the meaning of peace They will know peace. Blessed are mothers who taught us the importance of loving God and each other They shall see God. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY! THE WAY Today we sense the apostles trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord s promise that he is going to his Father s house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God s wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. PAGE THREE Fifth Sunday of Easter In the Gospel today, Jesus says...whoever believes in me will do the work that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. The coins placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box bring Christ love and compassion to the poor. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the tabernacle. The word genuflect comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can t be genuflecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with important symbols of the Lord s presence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord s presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I m not running away, I m yours, I m here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I m yours. If you would ever like to bring up the Gifts during Mass, please simply let the ushers know before Mass. Anyone is welcome to be gift bearer.
