VISITS TO THE SICK Communion visits are made in homes by making arrangements at the rectory. Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. 2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ Because of an early bulle n deadline (due to the Veteran s Day holiday earlier this month), I needed to write this ar cle before our sixth annual Polish Dinner took place on Nov. 11 th. But even though I can t offer specifics here about how the night went, I m sure that it was another success. The Polish Dinner has drawn a big crowd every year that we have had it. I am grateful to our Knights of Columbus, Ave Maria Council, for hos ng this event. They put together events like this not only to offer social events to build a community spirit, but also to help raise funds for the two parishes that they serve: St. Beatrice and St. Gertrude. The funds raised from this dinner will go towards some recent and much-needed maintenance repairs at our parish (which I ll talk more about next week). But the main thing I would like to focus on this weekend is our Rite of Chris an Ini a on (RCIA) candidate, Hersi Kotori. Hersi is preparing to become a full member of the Catholic Church by receiving the sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil on March 31 st. This Sunday, Nov. 19 th at the 8:00am Mass, Hersi will par cipate in the Rite of Acceptance. This Rite not only marks the beginning of the next stage of the RCIA process, but it also celebrates our parish s official acceptance of him as a candidate to receive the Easter sacraments in Hersi began the RCIA in September, and he will con nue with his forma on up un l the Easter Vigil. Please pray for Hersi and his sponsor Klaudia as he con nues on his journey toward full communion with the Catholic Church. And speaking of RCIA, for the last several years parishioner Peggy Chrusciel has been our lone RCIA catechist, and she has done a great job. This year I m happy to say that she now has some help: parishioners Mirusia Michalowski and Joel DeLeon (and Joel is a former RCIA candidate). They have stepped up to serve as RCIA catechists, and I am very grateful and happy to have them because, like Peggy, they are faith-filled people who are always willing to give of their me to the parish. Thank you to our RCIA team! Also, don t forget that this weekend is our Women s Club annual Fall Harvest Bake Sale. It will take place a er all the Masses in the Gathering Room at the back of church on the Irving Park side. Please take me to stop by and stock up on some delicious homemade treats for Thanksgiving. The members of our Women s Club work very hard on their two annual bake sales, which are always very successful events for our parish. Addi onally, we have very generous parishioners who always donate their me and talent by providing the baked goods. Thank you to all who help make the bake sale possible! Finally, I hope that you can join us on Thanksgiving Day to celebrate Mass in gra tude to God for His many blessings. Please plan to take one hour out of your day to celebrate the Eucharist, which is a word that means thanksgiving. Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 10:00am. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! 3 PAGE THREE Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time The good news of today s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need do is be faithful in small matters. The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are sharing God s extravagant love. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Earlier this autumn, we looked at how our Eucharistic Prayers have been enriched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard prayers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions). We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two prayers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the Holy Year of Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never f ormally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal. Rev. This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents?
