Couples are expected to meet with one of the priests before the marriage for instruction and preparation at least 6 months before date of marriage. VISITS TO THE SICK Communion visits are made in homes by making arrangements at the rectory. Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. When a family member is hospitalized, please notify the rectory so that hospital visits can be made. 2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ This weekend I will be speaking at all the Masses about one of our greatest needs here at the parish: we need many more parishioners to be good stewards. No, I m not talking about money. I mean, yes, we certainly need more parishioners to step up and contribute to our Sunday collec ons! However, giving of your treasure is not the only way to be a good steward. Stewardship is also about giving of your me and talent; in other words, it s about ge ng involved in parish ministries. And while we can always use more members in our parish groups, our biggest need is for more liturgical ministers. Who are the liturgical ministers? They are the people who serve at weekend Masses as ushers, altar servers, lectors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Chances are, you know many of these people by face and that is because many of them serve very o en, and the reason for that is that we very much need more volunteers, especially at our 8am and 12pm Masses. As I said, I will be speaking about our significant need for more volunteers at the Masses this weekend, and I will be at the back of church a er each Mass with a sign-up sheet for ushers, altar servers, lectors, and EMs. Please consider sharing you me and talent with St. Beatrice, instead of si ng back and assuming that someone else will step up to do it. One of our parishioners who does not sit back and assume someone else will do it is Wayne Bernacki. He is the 2018 St. Beatrice recipient of the Archdiocese s Chris fidelis Award. This award is given annually to those who have demonstrated outstanding service to their parish. Every pastor is asked to nominate a parishioner(s) for this award each year, and the recipients from around the Archdiocese come together for a ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral, where they are presented their award by Cardinal Cupich and the auxiliary bishops. This year s ceremony will take place on the a ernoon of Oct. 7 th. If you come to parish events and socials, then you have undoubutedly seen Wayne s face. He has been an invaluable part of St. Beatrice Parish. He is not only very organized, dedicated, and energe c, but perhaps most importantly he is always ready and willing to contribute to the life of the parish in whatever way he can. He has served in our Knights of Columbus (including as a past Grand Knight), Parish Council, Renew My Church team member, 90 th Anniversary Commi ee, and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Wayne is always one of the first people to help organize parish fundraisers and events, and he put together our annual Blue Mass to honor police, fire, and first responders. I am very grateful to Wayne for always being willing to contribute his me and talent, and I am proud to nominate him for the 2018 Chris fidelis Award. This week I also want to draw a en on to the blue banner hanging up in the front of church this weekend. It is the banner of our parish s St. Vincent de Paul Society, whose members serve the poor (the money that people donate to the poor boxes at the exits of church supports their work). Sep. 27 th was the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, so this weekend we honor him and the Society that bears his name. I would like to thank our SVDP members for their hard work in serving those in need in Schiller Park. Finally, don t forget that our Annual Pet Blessing will be at 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 6 th by the outdoor Prayer Garden. All animals are welcome as we ask God to bless them through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi (whose feast day is Oct. 4 th ). St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

On September 27, the Church celebrated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are on the front line in laboring for the poor, they are among the first to know their real needs. ST. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of Anglicizing the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of hedge schools. In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and civil disobedience ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. I d like to welcome back all of our returning students and families, and extend a warm welcome to all of the new students and families in our program. I d also like to welcome back our Catechists and Catechist Aides and thank them for all the time, talent, and treasure they share with our students to bring them closer to God. If you still need to enroll your child in the Religious Education Program you can do so by Stopping at the rectory during the week or arriving early before the next class on October 6 th. You DO NOT need to be a parishioner to register your child in the Religious Education Program.
