Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. When a family member is hospitalized, please notify the rectory so that hospital visits can be made. 2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ Because of the terrible nature of the recent news about the priest abuse scandal, I d like to share an excerpt from my homily on this topic from last weekend (because I was only able to deliver it at one Mass): In the wake of this scandal I can understand if people lose faith in some of the clergy, and I can even understand if people lose faith in the Church. My hope is that, at the very least, people will not lose faith in the Catholic faith because Jesus is the source of our faith, and He will never, ever let us down.you see, in the Gospel reading [John 6:60-69] we heard that the people who were listening to Jesus speak were scandalized. Jesus had just finished teaching them that they needed to eat His flesh and drink His blood if they wanted to have eternal life. To the Jews in Jesus audience, the eating of human flesh would have been a scandalous thing, an abomination against God (they did not understand that He was talking about His resurrected Body). So, because they were so scandalized, many of them would not listen to one more word that Jesus had to say, and they walked away. And when Jesus turned to the Twelve Apostles and asked them if they also wanted to leave, we heard Peter give a great response: Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. That s the point that I want to make today; those are the words that speak volumes: Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Keep in mind, the Twelve Apostles were faithful Jews, just like many of the people in Jesus audience. So, the Twelve might have had some reservations about what Jesus was teaching about eating His flesh and drinking His blood; they themselves might have been a little scandalized. But whether they were or not, they trusted that Jesus alone had the words of eternal life. They put their faith in Jesus, which is what I hope that Catholics can continue to do in the wake of this present-day scandal. You see, human beings can abandon Christ. Human beings even priests and bishops can walk away from Christ. But no matter which people or how many people leave Christ, Christ will never leave His Church; He will never leave us. So, I cannot speak for you, but speaking only for myself: I put my faith in the Church. Mind you, the Church is not the same as the Church hierarchy. The Church refers to the Body of Christ of which we are all members by our baptism and Jesus Christ is the Head of that Body. Like St. Peter, I believe that there is nowhere else that we need to look to for salvation. Jesus Christ alone has the words of eternal life, and He is the Head of our Church. The members may be sinful, but the Head is not. And my prayer is that Jesus, our Head and Shepherd, will bring healing and peace to the wounded members of His Body here on earth. Finally, I want to let everyone know that at the 12pm Mass on Sunday, Sep. 9th we will celebrate our 3rd annual Blue Mass, hosted by our Knights of Columbus. A Blue Mass honors police, fire, and all first responders. The Knights have invited not only the departments from Schiller Park, but from surrounding communities as well. All are welcome to attend this wonderful event as we honor those who risk their lives to keep us safe. And below is a photo from our very successful St. Beatrice Pot Luck Dinner on Aug. 21st. 3 PAGE THREE Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Gospel today hits home closer than we may think. What traditions do we blindly cling to? Perhaps it is enough for us to just to go to Mass on Sunday? Do we keep the letter 0f the law and miss entirely the spirit of the law. Interior righteousness means a heart turned to God. Purity of heart is expressed in righteous living: self-giving for the sake of 0thers. As you give your gift to the poor through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, in your heart you also will find the good news of God s love. ST. BEATRICE WOMEN S CLUB We will be having our annual membership sign up after all Masses weekend of September 1st & 2nd. Membership is open to all women of the parish. Our meetings are held on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00am, and are held in the meeting room of the rectory. Annual dues are $ We will also be selling tickets for our first Pasta Dinner and Raffle to be held on Saturday, September 15th at 6:00pm at the Schiller Park Community Center located at 4501 N. 25th Avenue. The cost of the dinner is: adult $20, children 5 to 12 years $12.00, and children 4 and under are free. The dinner is being catered by Cuomo Catering. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. The Registration day for the upcoming year will take place at the Wagner Street Entrance of the former school building on Saturday, September 15 th from 9am 3pm. You DO NOT need to be a member of the parish to enroll your child in the Religious Education Program. In order to register your child in the Religious Education program, you will need the following: Completed Registration Form Completed Media Release Form Completed Safe Environment Form Tuition Payment Copy of your child s Baptism certificate A copy of your child s 1 st Reconciliation and Communion certificates, if applicable. For a child to be eligible to receive a sacrament in the Religious Education Program they must meet the 2 year consecutive attendance requirement and all other requirements for that sacrament. Sacramental fees must be paid for each child receiving a sacrament this year in the Religious Education Program. The sacramental fees are: COMMUNION $30.00 CONFIRMATION $80.00 The tuition for the upcoming year is: 1 Child 2 Children 3 Or More Children Registered Parishioner $ $ $ Non Registered Parishioner $ $ $ Please note the tuition amounts DO NOT include sacramental fees.
