VISITS TO THE SICK Communion visits are made in homes by making arrangements at the rectory. Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. When a family member is hospitalized, please notify the rectory so that hospital visits can be made. 2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ This weekend is the Announcement Weekend for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). On this weekend I will speak from the pulpit about the importance of the ACA, and how it benefits not only the ministries of the Chicago Archdiocese, but also our parish of St. Beatrice. Next weekend, Feb , is the Commitment Weekend, when we ask every parish family to make a pledge to the ACA. And the following weekend, March 2-3, is the Follow -Up Weekend, when we give another opportunity to make a pledge (for those who may have missed the Commitment Weekend). The insert in this weekend s bulle n is the brochure put together by the Archdiocese that outlines the reasons for the ACA, where the money goes, and how it helps people throughout the Archdiocese and beyond. One important item that I must point out, and that the Archdiocese always points out, is that none of the dona ons that you give to the ACA are used for expenses related to the priest abuse scandal. The Archdiocese gives every parish a goal for the ACA, and that goal is 6% of a parish s ordinary income (Sundays and Holy Days) from the previous year. So, our goal for the 2019 Appeal is $16,367. And as always, every dollar that is collected beyond that goal comes back to St. Beatrice. So, if we were to collect $30,000 in the ACA, then over $13,000 would come directly to us, to be used for anything we wish. The good news for us is that every year for the past nine years we have done very well with the ACA; we have always collected beyond our goal. And that is indeed good news because we certainly rely on the extra funds from the ACA. We have several pressing maintenance issues that need to be addressed. For example, we only have one opera onal air condi oning compressor for our school building, so during the summer months it works constantly (remember, we have a tenant who rents our school building year-round). This is not good for the life of the compressor. It is wise to have a second one so that the workload can be alternated between the two. The installa on of a new compressor could cost somewhere between $10-15,000. And if you re wondering why we should spend so much money for an item for the school building, you need to know that we rely heavily on the rental income from our tenant to keep us going. If we lose that income, it would hurt us tremendously, so we need to provide heat and A/C in that building (remember, too, that half of the building is also used for our parish needs!) Other needed maintenance items are: new soffit and fascia on the school building, replacing one of the pumps on our church boiler, and replacing the church carpe ng but I will speak more about these in my talk at this weekend s Masses. Please also remember that when it comes to the ACA, we are asking you to make a pledge that can be paid off over an en re year. You do not have to give one dime next weekend if you make a pledge. Rather, we are simply asking you to consider what you can give over the span of a year. And as you prayerfully consider what you might be able to give, please keep in mind that these maintenance needs that I just men oned are only a frac on of the work that needs to be done on our buildings (for example, the tuck poin ng that is needed on all three buildings is a huge item). Aside from the ACA, there are two other items I would like to men on this weekend. First, I would like to thank our Music Director, Richard Gersten, for pu ng together another wonderful concert (last Wednesday) in our ongoing concert series. I also want to thank our Parish Choir members who par cipated, as well as those of you who took the me to a end. I hope you enjoyed it. And finally, here is an important Save-the-Date: our 2019 Lenten Mission will take place on the evenings of March As we did last year, we will be joining with parishioners from St. Maria Gore, Divine Savior, and Our Lady Mother of the Church. 3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary time In the Gospel today, Jesus gives us the blessing of serving the poor, hungry and weeping people, for you will then rejoice and leap for joy. But Jesus also teaches us the decisiveness of choice: blessing or woe. Choosing to help those who are suffering will fill your heart with the blessing of Jesus and indeed your reward will be great in heaven. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word order), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL. James Field, Copyright J. S.
