2 ST. GERTRUDE PARISH Treasures From Our Tradition In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the tabernacle. The word "genuflect" comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common -sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can't be genuflecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with important symbols of the Lord's presence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord's presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I'm not running away, I'm yours, I'm here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I'm yours. Today s Readings First Reading -- To meet their growing needs, the community chooses seven reputable men to serve the new Greek believers (Acts 6:1-7). Psalm -- Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading -- We, like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:4-9). Gospel -- "Show us the Father," Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: "Whoever sees me, sees the Father" (John 14:1-12). St. Gertrude Cemetery St. Gertrude s Cemetery has benefited from a Boy Scout Eagle Project completed by Zachary Paullet (a Member of Troop 551) from our parish. His project consisted of refurbishing the cemetery sign and installing a flowe rbed beneath it. He also had the flag pole repainted and renovated the veteran s memorial around it. There will be a flag raising ceremony on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, to honor those both past and present who have served our country. The ceremony will begin at approximately 8:30a.m. Saint Gertrude Reunion St. Gertrude Reunion committee will be meeting on Wednesday, May 24, at the Bari Social hall at 7:00p.m. All are welcome. The Way Today we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost.

Support of this collection helps to enrich society and to invite all to encounter the love of God Knights of Columbus The Greater Kiski Valley knights of Columbus will be holding their annual baby bottle campaign drive. It will be held the whole month of May. Your baby bottles may be picked up at the church during that time. Please help support their worth while cause. Cardinal Maida Academy PART-TIME PRESCHOOL We are currently seeking a part-time teacher for our preschool program. Catholic Daughters of America CD of A is sponsoring a bus trip to the Lamplighter for lunch and a play at the Apple Hill Playhouse on June 11, Cost of the bus trip is only $50, and includes transportation, lunch, gratuity, and play. The Total pledges and gifts received for this year s Diocesan Lenten Appeal is $53,795. and our parish goal has been exceeded by $8,717. All dollars pledged or given going forward will be returned to our parish and used here. We are looking for readers, altar servers, ushers and greeters in 6 th -12 th grades. LIFETEEN will be having our End Of Year Party on May 21 st. We will meet at our regular space and then head outside (weather permitting) to play some games. Food will be served. Prizes will be drawn from LIFETEEN bucks! Please turn in your permission slips (if you haven t completed it yet) so that you can out for ice cream after Mass on Ascension Thursday, May 25 th. We will call when we are on the way home from getting ice cream. Please turn them in by this Monday, May 22 nd.
