Sacrament of the Sick: If you are hospitalized or unable to come to Church for health reasons and would like to be visited by a priest for Confession, Communion, or Anointing of the Sick, please call the rectory. Religious Education Program (CCD): For children 1 st to 8 th grades who are not attending Catholic School. Classes are held on Sundays from September to May at 11:30 AM, with attendance to the 12:30 PM Family Mass. Confirmation: Teens will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on 8 th grade. They will attend classes at 11:30 AM from September to December; and from January to April classes will start at 11:00 AM in the church hall, with attendance to the 12:30 PM Family Mass. NICHOLAS TOWN HALL MEETING We encourage all parishioners to attend a Town Hall meeting this Monday, May 15 in the Joppolo s Hall (church hall) at 7:30 PM. CCD END OF THE YEAR PARTY Our children, parents and catechists will gather to celebrate the end of the CCD on Sunday, May 21. We will have a CLOWN AND PUPPET SHOW You are the light of the world about letting your light shine! This special presentation will start at 11:30 AM DON T MISS IT! TRICKY TRAY 2017 will be held on Saturday, June 3 from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. We are collecting items to be auctioned. Please bring your donations to the rectory s office (All donations are tax deductable). Admission ticket is $20.00 ($30 at door) per person and includes 25 tickets (Tier 1) + sandwich, soda, coffee and cookies Tickets are on sale in the rectory office. Holy Hour of Adoration for Vocations Every Thursday from 6:15 to 7:15 PM in church ~ Except on eve of first Fridays ~ 5 th SUNDAY OF EASTER THE WAY Today we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the tabernacle. The word "genuflect" comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can't be genuflecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with important symbols of the Lord's presence. So, a cross bearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord's presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I'm not running away, I'm yours, I'm here for you. 5 A letter to Mary, the Mother of the Lord Dear Mary, If there was a way for me to mail this to heaven, I would. I mean, of all the mothers that should get something on Mother s Day you re definitely one of them. I was just thinking about mothers and how much I love the moments when I m able to call my mom and just tell her how I feel... she s so good at listening to me. I love my mom and couldn t be more happy with having a mother who does everything she can to be a good mother. She doesn t even know how great she is. But then I realized... sometimes I forget that you are my mother too, and that you re closer to me than I think. I can sit and talk to you, just as I would my own mother. I know that you love me in the same way that you love your Son, Jesus. When Jesus said on the cross to the beloved disciple, Behold your mother you didn t take that lightly (John 19:26-27). At that moment, you took all of humanity under your motherly care... including me. I honestly, don t know how to say thank you for this. It can be easy to let Mother s Day come and go without much thought towards you. I forget that you have been my mother throughout my entire existence. In the times when my mother s imperfections hindered her ability to love me perfectly, you stepped in. You loved me through her, and the love she has for me is fulfilled by your constant and powerful love. Please help me see and appreciate the ways that you love me. And can you show me how to love my own mother like you would? There s a reason why your Son chose her to be my mother on earth; please pray for her that she can be more like you as well. I can t thank you enough for loving me and caring for me. My words cannot express how thankful I am that you have loved me unconditionally. It s so crazy to think that God loves me so much that He would share His perfect mom with me. So, thank you. Happy Mother s Day to the best mother on earth... and in heaven.
