2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! I pray that 2016 will hold many blessings for you. As we begin this new calendar year there are some liturgical feast days that I want to mention. Today we celebrate a very important feast today in the Church calendar, the feast of the Epiphany. On this day we commemorate the three wise men s visit to the baby Jesus (in the Western Church the wise men are traditionally known by the names Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar). They presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. There are different theories behind the meaning of these gifts, but they are generally understood as follows: (1) Gold symbolizes the kingship of Christ, (2) Frankincense symbolizes Christ s priestly nature (incense is sometimes used at Mass as a sign of our prayers rising to God), and (3) Myrrh, an embalming ointment, symbolizes Christ s suffering and death (as Jesus body was anointed before His burial). Of course, it is from this action of the wise men bringing gifts to Christ that we have the tradition of exchanging gifts on Christmas (this is also why, in some countries today, gifts are not exchanged on Christmas Day, but on the feast of the Epiphany). This weekend we can now see the igures of the wise men right next to our church s nativity scene as they present these gifts to the baby Jesus (prior to this we had them located at the left side altar, since they were still making their journey!) And speaking of our church decorations, I want to give some overdue thanks to our dedicated sacristans and volunteers who gave of their time and talent to beautifully decorate the church for Christmas. I also want to thank all of you who contributed to our Christmas Flower collection. The church once again looks very beautiful for Christmas, and that is thanks to all of you who donated to the purchase of lowers. And thank you again to everyone who played a part in helping our liturgies re lect the joy of the Christmas season! And since I m offering thanks, I also want to thank the many parishioners who send cards, treats, and gifts to me and the rectory staff. It is really overwhelming each year, and we appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. Finally, let s remember that this new calendar year is also a Year of Mercy, as decreed by Pope Francis. One of the best ways to demonstrate mercy in our lives is to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy that our Church has recommended for centuries. The corporal works (which focus more on the human body) are: Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. The spiritual works (which focus more on the human soul) are: Instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish sinners, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offenses willingly, comfort the af licted, and pray for the living and dead. May we look for opportunities to put these works of mercy into practice in our lives. St. Beatrice, pray for us in this New Year. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

3 PAGE THREE ASK YOUR PASTOR If you would like to ask Fr. Rob a question about anything related to the Catholic faith, please drop your questions at the back of church in the Ask Your Pastor box, or them to stbeatricechurch@sbcglobal.net. All questions may be submitted anonymously. This week s question is: Just curious. Why didn t you come to the parish Christmas party? Everyone was asking. I debated about whether or not to answer this question in the bulletin, for two reasons. First, I had basically already answered this question over two years ago. At the summer calendar meeting in 2013 I informed the heads of all the parish groups that I would not be available for any parish functions on Fridays, and if they wanted me to be present at Friday events they would need to reschedule their events. I then asked them to communicate this to every single person in the groups that they oversee. The message seemed to be slow in getting out, so I again reiterated it at the calendar meetings in 2014 and 2015, and I again asked the heads to communicate it to everyone in their groups. Now, many parishioners who attend the Christmas party are also the same people who are involved in parish organizations, so if all the organizations had communicated the message as I requested, then my not being at the party should not have been a surprise to many people. The second reason I hesitated answering this question here in the bulletin is because it does not really belong in the bulletin. As the intro to Ask Your Pastor states (above), this column is for questions related to the Catholic faith. We ask and answer Catholic questions here in the bulletin in order to help explain the faith more thoroughly to many people at once. Your question here was meant more for me personally, as opposed to a question about the faith. Therefore, my answer is: if you would like to know why I was not at the party, the best thing would be to ask me face-to-face and I will be more than happy to fully explain the situation. The problem with our culture (not simply in the parish or in the Church, but in the wider culture in general) is that people love to speculate, and to talk about someone behind their back, rather than to someone. This never results in anything good. So again, I invite anyone who has questions about my decision to speak to me face-to-face and get the answer from me. As Matthew s Gospel says, the first thing to do when we have an issue with someone is to confront them personally (Mt. 18:15-16). And in fact, this is the reason why I decided to include this question in the bulletin, because this is indeed an opportunity to teach about the Catholic faith. In his Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul gives us words of wisdom that you, I, and all of us need to be reminded of each day. He says: Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. (Eph. 4:29)

They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for May Christ bless this house. The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar although scripture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi s. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi s quest for meaning and peace.
