VISITS TO THE SICK Communion visits are made in homes by making arrangements at the rectory. Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. 2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ May is often a very hopeful month for many people, I think, not only because of the spring weather, but also because of the happy celebrations that usually occur during this month: First Communions, Con irmations, graduations, and Mother s Day. As I had previously mentioned, our 8 th grade Religious Ed. students received the sacrament of Con irmation on April 18 th. Next weekend, on Saturday, May 7 th, our 2 nd grade and Sacramental Prep. Religious Ed. students will receive their First Holy Communion. Please pray for these young Catholics and for their families, that they will always remain open to the grace of God that comes to us through the Church s sacraments. This month is also dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary. I think it s itting that, before we get to Mother s Day next Sunday, we begin this month by honoring the woman who is blessed among women. As all Catholic parishes do at this time of year, we will honor Mary with our annual May Crowning, which will take place at the 12pm Mass on Sunday, May 8 th. I ll say more about the Virgin Mary at the end of this article, but let me mention two other things irst. One of our parish s most important fundraisers, the 200 Club dinner and cash raf le, will take place on Friday, May 20 th. This annual event hosted by our Men s Club generates $10,000 for St. Beatrice every year, but that is only if we sell all 200 tickets. Please help us keep the streak going. Tickets are $100 apiece. Each ticket entitles you and a guest to the buffet dinner on May 20 th, and it gives you one entry into the cash raf le drawing for that evening (and the irst prize is $5,000!) Tickets are on sale in church after Mass and during the week at the rectory. Also, if you missed the two presentations given by me and Deacon Ron on our India pilgrimage, we recorded the irst presentation back in March, and that video is now available on YouTube. Fair warning: it is two hours long, but being that it is online, at least you can watch it at your leisure! The web address for the video is: Finally, I haven t offered Catholic trivia in a while, and seeing as this is the month of Mary, how about some trivia regarding our Blessed Mother? The answers will be printed in my bulletin article next week. Good luck! What does the Blessed Mother have in heaven that the rest of us will not have until the Last Day? Who designed the Miraculous Medal, which has been worn around the necks of millions of Catholics? When the pregnant Virgin Mary visited Elizabeth, Elizabeth s baby leaped inside her womb. When a single woman pledged her life to Christ, in a way of life not dissimilar to today s religious women, the outward sign of this commitment was a veiling. In ancient Rome, a woman with uncovered head was unmarried, and a veiled woman was off limits to suitors. It was one small step to decide that a bride should receive a veil from the hands of the church as a sign of her new state in life. The prayer that accompanied the veiling was beautiful, and sung, a kind of consecratory prayer that was very similar to the prayer of ordination, or the prayers for blessing holy water or chrism. The nuptial blessing originally mentioned only the woman, although we know that the veil was often extended to cover the husband s shoulders also. The blessing was located before the kiss of peace, which the priest gave to the husband, and the husband to his new bride. Remember that this is in the early centuries, long before the kiss of peace virtually disappeared from liturgy. The veiling and blessing was required when priests or deacons married, was recommended to laypersons, but forbidden for certain public sinners and second marriages. The veiling of the couple was preserved in England until the Reformation, and is returning to practice among Swedish Lutherans after having fallen into disuse about seventy-five years ago. Rev. What We re Learning 6 th Grade We shared our Easter traditions with the class and how our families celebrated this year. We discussed how the Easter season has just begun and how it will end on Pentecost. 7 th Grade We learned in God s eyes we all have the same value and respect. We owe our lives to God. We are all designed by God and are unique and beautiful. Every day we get new opportunities and chances to think and do what is right. The choices we make are not always easy to do. We discussed how self-discipline is not always easy. 8 th Grade We learned that sin occurs when we turn away from God. They can be a partial turning away venial sins, or a complete break with God mortal sins. As Christians we are always being called to forgiveness and reconciliation with each other and God.
