VISITS TO THE SICK Communion visits are made in homes by making arrangements at the rectory. Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Our St. Beatrice Women s Club is hos ng their annual Bunny Bake Sale this weekend. If you re looking for delicious, homemade treats to bring home for Easter, make sure to stop by the Bake Sale a er Mass in the Gathering Room at the back of church. I d like to thank our Women s Club and all those who donated their me and talent to provide and sell the baked goods. On Monday, March 26 th we will celebrate our Lenten Reconcilia on Service at 7:00pm here at St. Beatrice. Several priests will be available for individual confession and absolu on (and please note that this will be the last opportunity for confession before Easter because confessions are not heard on Holy Saturday, March 31 st ). On Tuesday a ernoon, March 27 th Archbishop Cupich will celebrate the annual Chrism Mass at Holy Name Cathedral. Two important things take place at this Mass: (1) the priests of the Archdiocese renew their ordina on promises, and (2) the three oils Oil of Catechumens, Oil of the Sick, and Chrism Oil are blessed and distributed to each parish for their use in the celebra on of the sacraments. The oils that we receive for St. Beatrice will then be presented during the offertory at our Holy Thursday Mass and placed in our ambry (and if you don t know what an ambry is, or where it is located in our church, come to the Holy Thursday Mass to find out!) We then begin the Sacred Triduum ( three days ) on the evening of Thursday, March 29 th. Please note that there will be no 8:30am Mass or Communion service on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week because the only liturgies celebrated during the Triduum are the ones listed below. At 7:00pm on Holy Thursday we celebrate the Mass of the Lord s Supper. Because Holy Thursday is the night that Jesus first gave us Himself in the Eucharist, this Mass will be followed by Eucharis c Adora on un l 11:00pm. You are welcome to stop in church at any me un l 11:00pm to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The next day, Good Friday, is a day of abstaining from meat for everyone over the age of 13, as well as a day of fas ng for everyone ages On Good Friday we celebrate the main service, the Lord s Passion and Death, at 3:00pm, which is the hour when Jesus died on the cross. At 7:00pm on Good Friday we will have the Living Sta ons of the Cross, presented by our Religious Ed. students from various grade levels. On Holy Saturday we will have our Easter Basket Blessing at 12:00pm. Then, at 7:30pm on Holy Saturday, we will celebrate the highest Mass of the year the Easter Vigil Mass (please note the start me of 7:30pm, because this Mass is supposed to begin a er sundown). At the Vigil Mass our R.C.I.A. elect, Hersi Kotori, will be ini ated into the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on and Eucharist. Finally, on Easter Sunday we will celebrate Mass at the usual mes of 8am, 10am and 12pm. If you have never par cipated in these Triduum liturgies before, I invite and strongly encourage you to come, because together these three days tell the story that is at the heart of our faith: the saving death and resurrec on of Jesus Christ. 3 PAGE THREE PALM SUNDAY Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to take up our own cross and to follow Jesus through death to new life. During Lent, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring the mercy of Jesus into the hearts of the poor by assisting 6 families with food. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the Road of Sorrows, in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the pilgrim s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. What We re Learning 7 th Grade We learned that the choices we make in life are either good or bad. Sometimes the choices we make can be painful for us to make. We learned that in our lives we will belong to a variety of groups our families, our class, teammates, community, parish and other groups. We may choose to belong to the groups or the groups may choose us. We learned that as Catholics we are part of God s people, His Church. Our faith grows as we learn to experience life; it also grows with help from our families and catechists, as well as through prayer and the sacraments. We should always strive to love God above all things in life. 8 th Grade We learned that when we are confirmed in the Sacrament of Confirmation, we will be anointed with holy oil, a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Our anointing will signify our being chosen and sealed by the Holy Spirit in preparation for discipleship and mission. Hosanna in the Highest!
